Adolescent Health Concerns in Urban Ethiopia: Stakeholders' Perspectives.

Adolescents (10-19 years of age) in low-income settings face unique health challenges. This study explores adolescent health concerns and existing efforts to address them in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A qualitative study using in-depth interviews with key informants and focus group discussions was conducted with adolescents, parents, school staff, government officials, and nongovernmental organization representatives (n = 36). Data were analyzed thematically using Open Code qualitative software. Our results showed that menstrual hygiene, unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and a

Impact of Limited Access to Surgical Care in Medically Underserved Communities.

Summary/BackgroundMedically underserved communities and ethnic minorities constitute a significant portion of the vulnerable population within the United States. Recent changes in the health care structure, rising inflation with a decline in median household income, and the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic have disproportionately impacted communities of low socioeconomic status. Healthcare providers and federal organizations must be aware of how these factors influence access to surgical care to tailor treatment, interventions, and policies better to meet the needs of these populations.MethodWe systematica

Erema po otjindjumba? Highlighting cultural models and knowledge gaps of malaria in rural Namibian pastoralists.

BACKGROUND: As Namibia attempts to eradicate locally transmitted cases of malaria, epidemiological strategies, interventions, and outreach require a sound understanding of indigenous knowledge and practice. Research describing local explanatory models of disease can be of value in these efforts by elucidating how disease is interpreted and treated. To understand how perceptions of malaria infection and treatment may influence health-seeking behaviour, cultural models of the disease were explored in two ethnic groups in rural northwest Namibia. METHODS: Mixed-sex focus groups of 4-8 individual

Navigating Challenges in the Delivery of Diabetic Foot Self-care Education: Perspectives of Nurses in Rural Southwest China.

BACKGROUND: Several prior studies have investigated determinants linked to the insufficient delivery of diabetic foot self-care education (DFSE), with some specifically concentrating on rural environments. Individuals with diabetes, especially those at risk of foot ulcers, should acquire the skills necessary for daily foot inspection, proper toenail-trimming techniques, consistent use of appropriate footwear, and a thorough understanding of preventive measures against ulcers. OBJECTIVE: To explore the challenges associated with delivering DFSE among nurses in rural areas. METHODS: The author

Into the wild: a mixed-methods pilot study of the mental health benefits of a nature summer camp for urban children with psychological needs.

Research suggests that nature promotes psychological and behavioral health among children. However, children living in low-income urban communities often have less access to green spaces compared to their counterparts living in high-income neighborhoods, and limited research has investigated the impact of nature on well-being and social connectedness in children experiencing marginalization. To address this gap, this mixed-methods study examined the impact of a one-week immersive nature camp on the well-being and social connectedness of 27 children aged 6-12 years referred to a community hub i

Exploring the consequences of housing insecurity on HIV treatment outcomes: Qualitative insights from Kisumu, Kenya.

Housing insecurity (HI) is inextricably linked to poor health outcomes. Evidence suggests people living with HIV are more likely to experience poor psychological, physical, and nutritional health challenges. However, how housing insecurity might impact treatment outcomes among people living with HIV is under-explored. We examined the consequences of HI on treatment outcomes among people living with HIV in rural Kenya. Between July and August 2023. we purposively recruited and conducted 30 in-depth interviews and four focus group discussions (n = 35) with adult men and women living with HIV. Gu

Redefining the term "Disadvantaged student": A post baccalaureate program's role in underrepresented students' success and reclaiming of narratives.

PURPOSE: Racial/ethnic minority groups and low-income students continue to be underrepresented in medicine (URiM) despite years of diversity and inclusion efforts. Post baccalaureate programs (PBP) are shown to prepare underrepresented students to successfully matriculate to medical school. However, identification of the aspects of a PBP that are key to future success in medicine from the student perspective is lacking. Therefore, this study was designed to answer the question, "What aspects of a post baccalaureate program do URiM students see as valuable to their future success?" METHODS: Th

Exploring Transportation Challenges and Opportunities for Mobility-Vulnerable Populations Through the Social-Ecological Model.

Community mobility is a vital activity of daily living. Mobility-vulnerable populations-individuals with incomes below the federal poverty threshold, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and older adults-face transit disparities. Advanced technologies (e.g., ride-sharing) may mitigate transportation inequities, but limited evidence considers mobility-vulnerable populations. Utilizing the social-ecological model, the team examined challenges and opportunities associated with transportation availability, accessibility, affordability, acceptability, and adaptability among two socioeconomic

Multiple Imputation of Race and Hispanic Ethnicity in National Surveillance Data for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis.

BACKGROUND: Disease burden of sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis is often compared across age categories, sex categories, and race and ethnicity categories. Missing data may prevent researchers from accurately characterizing health disparities between populations. This article describes the methods used to impute race and Hispanic ethnicity in a large national surveillance data set. METHODS: All US cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis (excluding congenital syphilis) reported through the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System from the ye

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of the general population and health care workers.

The Health Sciences Foundation has assembled a multidisciplinary group around a series of questions about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of the general population and specific groups within that population, particularly healthcare workers. In the general population, the most prevalent mental disorders have been anxiety, sleep disorders and affective disorders, primarily depression. There has been a considerable increase in suicidal behavior, especially in young women and men over 70 years of age. There has been an increase in alcohol abuse and nicotine, cannabis and c

Ensemble machine learning of factors influencing COVID-19 across US counties.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) the causal agent for COVID-19, is a communicable disease spread through close contact. It is known to disproportionately impact certain communities due to both biological susceptibility and inequitable exposure. In this study, we investigate the most important health, social, and environmental factors impacting the early phases (before July, 2020) of per capita COVID-19 transmission and per capita all-cause mortality in US counties. We aggregate county-level physical and mental health, environmental pollution, access to health care,

Wiskott Aldrich syndrome: healthcare utilizations and disparities in transplant care.

Wiskott Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is a rare disease and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT) is considered the treatment modality of choice for WAS. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis on the KIDS' pediatric inpatient database and compared hospitalization rates, complications and healthcare utilizations in the transplant and non-transplant arms. Of the 383 pediatric admissions with diagnosis of WAS between 2006-2012, 114 underwent transplant and 269 did not. The non-transplant arm included older children, female patients and more African Americans. Death rates, income and payer source wer

Borrelia afzelii alters reproductive success in a rodent host.

The impact of a pathogen on the fitness and behaviour of its natural host depends upon the host-parasite relationship in a given set of environmental conditions. Here, we experimentally investigated the effects of Borrelia afzelii, one of the aetiological agents of Lyme disease in humans, on the fitness of its natural rodent host, the bank vole (Myodes glareolus), in semi-natural conditions with two contrasting host population densities. Our results show that B. afzelii can modify the reproductive success and spacing behaviour of its rodent host, whereas host survival was not affected. Infecti

The material, moral, and affective worlds of dealing and crime among young men entrenched in an inner city drug scene.

A large body of previous research has elucidated how involvement in drug dealing and crime among marginalized urban youth who use drugs is shaped by the imperatives of addiction and survival in the context of poverty. However, a growing body of research has examined how youth's involvement in these activities is shaped by more expansive desires and moralities. In this paper, we examine the material, moral, and affective worlds of loosely gang affiliated, street level dealing and crime among one group of young men in Vancouver, Canada. Drawing on longitudinal interviews with 44 young men from 2

Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes in Asthmatic Women: A Population-Based Family Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is associated with several adverse pregnancy and perinatal outcomes. Familial factors may confound these associations. OBJECTIVE: To examine the role of measured and unmeasured confounding by conducting a study that compared differentially exposed cousins and siblings from the same families. METHODS: We retrieved data on adverse pregnancy outcomes, prescribed drugs, and physician-diagnosed asthma from nationwide registers for all women in Sweden with singleton births between 2001 and 2013. Logistic and linear regression estimated the association between maternal asthma and
