When changing to bifocal lenses from distance anisometropic lenses, presbyopic patients may experience diplopia when attempting to do close work. Different types of progressive addition lenses were compared with each other. It was our aim to measure all parameters in such a way that they were consistent with the normal wearing situation. The distribution of the spherical power and astigmatism was measured with a special focimeter. The induced distortion, which is important for patient acceptance, was determined by a photographic method. There are significant differences between the various types of progressive addition lenses. However, objective information is not sufficient to resolve the subjective question of patient acceptance.

Consideration must be given to a number of factors when designing spectacles for the presbyopic VDT worker. Video terminals are routinely positioned high within the working field, usually at an intermediate distance. It is often difficult for a practitioner to design a single pair of multifocals to satisfy the visual needs of these workers. In this investigation, different fitting designs of progressive addition multifocals were subjectively compared for 24 presbyopic VDT operators. The results were correlated with measurements taken at the workstations for each of the participants.
