This is a double masked, randomized, crossover design trial of orally administered haloperidol in human volunteers. There was a statistically significant drop of the intraocular pressure in non-glaucomatous volunteers at 3 and 4 hours following haloperidol administration. The subarachnoid bolt has been used extensively to monitor intracranial pressure in a variety of conditions. We have had two patients who had subarachnoid bolts in place that were thought to be functional in whom evidence of increased pressure was present. In one case, the patient had Reye's syndrome with seizure activity, decerebrate posturing, fixed and dilated pupils, and cardiac arrest. The neuropsychological observations of 63 patients undergoing surgery for "normal pressure hydrocephalus" (NPH) have been analyzed retrospectively. To make a semiological picture of mental disturbances in NPH, the level of consciousness, behaviour and cognitive functions were studied. The authors report on twelve years experience with so-called normal pressure hydrocephalus. If care is taken to make a correct diagnosis and give adequate treatment with a shunt, hydrocephalic dementia has a good prognosis. Such cases should be distinguished from other syndromes, particularly senile dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The occurrence of a syndrome of dementia should compel every neurologist and neurosurgeon to carry out careful investigations in order to determine the favourable time for possible treatment.

The principle of compression of the limbs by means of a mercury pressure gradient has repercussions at various levels of the vascular physiology. This study demonstrates its effects on the lymphatic system, where post-radiotherapeutic, post-surgical and post-traumatic lymphedema (LE) can easily be reduced. The effect of centrally administered corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) on intraocular pressure (IOP) was investigated using the technique of ventriculocisternal perfusion. Various amounts of ovine CRF (0.01, 0.033, 0.1 and 0.33 micrograms/min) were perfused in conscious, male New Zealand albino rabbits for 1 hour. Three patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus and Parkinson's disease are reported. Blood pressure measurements recorded during the medical Research Council's treatment trial for mild hypertension have been analysed according to the calendar month in which the readings were made. For each age, sex, and treatment group systolic and diastolic pressures were higher in winter than in summer. The seasonal variation in blood pressure was greater in older than in younger subjects and was highly significantly related to maximum and minimum daily air temperature measurements but not to rainfall.

A neuropsychological Mental Deterioration Battery (MDB) was used to identify deterioration profiles of 43 patients afflicted with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) (n = 18) or other forms of dementia (n = 25). The NPH patients submitted to a shunt-intervention (n = 10) were also evaluated after surgery. A comparison of profiles, obtained from the experimental and control groups, shows that NPH patients seem to be more impaired in tests designed to detect frontal lobe involvement. Some implications of the relatively greater impairment of frontal functions in NPH dementia are discussed.

Eleven thousand eighty-two term, singleton pregnancies were analyzed for clues to how different levels of maternal blood pressure affect fetal growth. Birth weights progressively increased with increasing pressures until the hypertensive range was reached when maternal edema and proteinuria were absent. A study of 11 consecutive patients with anterior uveal melanomas from one institution demonstrated the wide variation in the clinical and histopathologic manifestations of the tumors. The intraocular pressure in the involved eye compared with the fellow eye was elevated in five cases, equal in four, and reduced in two.
