Improvement of 3D printing age-friendly brown rice food on rough texture, swallowability, and in vitro digestibility using fermentation properties of different probiotics.

Probiotics can promote the balance of the intestinal microbial community and enhance the biological activity of food. They are beneficial to the health of elderly people. Therefore, five different probiotics (4% of the total weight) were added to pasted brown rice to study the printability, swallowability, and digestibility of fermented inks (at 40 °C for 10 h). The results showed that probiotics reduced the apparent viscosity and resistance to deformation of brown rice inks. The inks with Lactobacillus bulgaricus (LB), Bifidobacterium longum (BL), and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (LP) had be

Effects of sodium chloride on the textural attributes, rheological properties, microstructure, and 3D printing performance of rice starch-curdlan composite gel.

This study explores the impact of varying concentrations of salt ions (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5 mmol) on the physicochemical properties and 3D-printing performance of rice starch-curdlan composite gel. The relationship between gel structure, properties, printability, and printing accuracy was clarified through the evaluation of each parameter. The inclusion of an appropriate concentration of NaCl positively influenced the properties and printing characteristics of the composite gel. Specifically, a NaCl concentration of 7.5 mmol yielded the highest printing performance, achieving 98.61 % a

Combination of high resolution MRI with 3D-printed needle guides for ex vivo myocardial biopsies.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides a multitude of techniques to detect and characterize myocardial infarction. To correlate MRI findings with histology, in most cases terminal animal studies are performed; however, precise extraction and spatial correlation of myocardial tissue samples to MRI image data is difficult. In this proof of concept study, we present a 3D-printing technique to facilitate the extraction of tissue samples from myocardial regions. Initially, seven pig hearts embedded in formaldehyde were imaged on a clinical 3 T system to define biopsy targets on high resolution e

Advancement in computational simulation and validation of congenital heart disease: a review.

The improvement in congenital heart disease (CHD) treatment and management has increased the life expectancy in infants. However, the long-term efficacy is difficult to assess and thus, computational modelling has been applied for evaluating this. Here, we provide an overview of the applications of computational modelling in CHD based on three categories; CHD involving large blood vessels only, heart chambers only, and CHD that occurs at multiple heart structures. We highlight the advancement of computational simulation of CHD that uses multiscale and multiphysics modelling to ensure a complet

Modular Point-of-Need Tropane Alkaloid Detection at Regulatory Levels: Combining Solid-Liquid Extraction from Buckwheat with a Paper-Immobilized Liquid-Phase Microextraction and Immuno-Detection in Interconnectable 3D-Printed Devices.

Contamination with tropane alkaloids in cereals is expected to increase globally. However, current identification tools (e.g., liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) for tropane alkaloids are time-consuming and expensive. Furthermore, their miniaturized alternatives lack sensitivity and robustness. Therefore, there is a pressing need for inexpensive and effective screening methods. Here, an on-site applicable modular workflow for tropane alkaloid detection in buckwheat is presented. The modular workflow combines paper microfluidics and interconnectable 3D-printed sample preparation tools and

Controllable Contact-Destructive Hydrogel Actuators.

Constructing hydrogels with spatially heterogeneous structures are crucial for unlocking novel applications. To this end, selectively removing a specific portion of hydrogels by facile and intricate destructive strategies is worth exploring. Herein, a "contact-destructive" hydrogel actuator is presented, composed of a dynamic hydrogel network doped with hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG). The destructive behavior of the hydrogel actuator is attributed to the surface tension-induced spreading effect and the enhanced water absorption due to the additive PEG. Parameters that act on these mecha

Design of 3D printing osteotomy block for foot based on triply periodic minimal surface.

The ankle joint, which connects the lower limbs and the sole of the foot, is prone to sprain during walking and sports, which leads to ankle arthritis. Supratroleolar osteotomy is an ankle preserving operation for the treatment of ankle arthritis, in which the osteotomy is an important fixing and supporting part. In order to avoid stress shielding effect as much as possible, the osteotomy block is designed as a porous structure. In this study, the osteotomy block was designed based on three-period minimal surface, and the designed structure was manufactured by 3D printing. The mechanical prope

Exploring the mechanical properties of 3D-printed multilayer lattice structures for use in accommodative insoles.

Full-contact insoles fabricated from multilayer foams are the standard of care (SoC) for offloading and redistributing high plantar pressures in individuals with diabetes at risk of plantar ulceration and subsequent lower limb amputation. These devices have regional variations in total thickness and layer thickness to create conformity with a patient's foot. Recent work has demonstrated that metamaterials can be tuned to match the mechanical properties of SoC insole foams. However, for devices fabricated using a multilayer lattice structure, having regional variations in total thickness and la
