BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of skin, the etiology of which is not completely known. Despite the latter, anti-desmoglein antibodies play a proven role in the pathogenesis. Recent studies showed an etiologic effect for prolactin in the pemphigus vulgaris. This study aimed to quantify the correlation between serum prolactin levels and anti-desmoglein antibodies in patients with pemphigus vulgaris.

BACKGROUND: Deficiency of one or more anterior pituitary hormones may follow treatment with external radiation when hypothalamo-pituitary axis lies within the field of radiation. Patients with brain tumours who are treated with radiation frequently have growth hormone (GH) deficiency, other neuro-endocrine abnormalities are presumed to be uncommon. The present study has been undertaken with the aim to study GH and prolactin secretion, their relationship with dose of radiotherapy and duration after radiotherapy in patients who have received extracranial radiation for extrasellar tumours.

Postpartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a disease of unknown etiology and exposes women to high risk of mortality after delivery. Here, we show that female mice with a cardiomyocyte-specific deletion of stat3 develop PPCM. A 59-year-old male patient was transnasally operated on because of a pituitary adenoma with hypopituitarism. A second operation and X-ray therapy followed a half year later due to recurrent tumor. Only seven cases of metastatic prolactin-secreting pituitary tumour have been reported in world literature. The metastases were intra-cranial in five cases and extra-cranial in two cases. We report a further case with multiple intra-cranial metastases in the supra-tentorial compartment. Histologically, both primary and metastatic tumours were benign with strongly positive immuno-histochemical staining for prolactin. Our case exemplifies the inconsistent correlation between the histopathological appearance and biological behaviour of malignant pituitary tumours.

Nine patients (2 boys, 7 girls) with prolactinomas diagnosed at puberty were followed for 2 to 20 years. The presenting signs were sexual infantilism (n = 2), amenorrhea-galactorrhea (n = 6) and hypogonadism (n = 1). Growth retardation was also present in 3 cases. The influence of the dopamine receptor blocking agent domperidone on prolactin and TSH secretion was studied in 16 infants, aged 10-360 days, who were treated for gastroesophageal reflux. Serum and CSF prolactin (PRL) concentrations were determined during eight weeks of fluphenazine medication in 28 patients with acute symptoms of schizophrenia. In order to assess the possible influence of fetal polypeptide hormones on birth size, somatomedin-like receptor activity (SmLRA) (n = 281), prolactin (n = 158), growth hormone (n = 133) and insulin (n = 108) concentrations were measured in the cord blood of 281 singleton infants born after different complications of pregnancy.
