A novel method of assessing balance and postural sway in patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) frequently suffer from poor balance and proprioception and are at an increased risk for falls. Here we present a means of assessing a variety of balance and postural conditions in a fast and non-invasive manner. The equipment required is commercially available and requires limited personnel. Patients can be repeatedly tested to determine balance and postural differences as a result of disease progression and aging, or a reversal following balance/exercise interventions.

Is cerebellar anodal transcranial direct current stimulation an appropriate locomotor intervention for people with multiple sclerosis?

The present article demonstrates split-belt treadmill training, but not cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), reduces fall risk for people with multiple sclerosis. Concerns regarding the implementation of the split-belt paradigm, coupled with insensitive outcome measures and a nonoptimal neural target for tDCS may have contributed to the limited gait improvements observed. A more fitting stimulation may be to target nervous system structures in the periphery to improve sensorimotor transduction and elicit more accurate proprioception.

[Follow-up treatment with physiotherapy after arthroscopic reconstruction in SLAP lesions].

An appropriate physiotherapeutic treatment program complements an optimal operative result. In the instance of SLAP lesions, a differentiated therapy is only possible on consultation with the surgeon. A detailed treatment design allows optimal guidance of the patient to his or her personal goal. Important treatment elements include the optimization of the ability of the humerus head to centralize and the proprioception of the shoulder joint, as well as reinstatement of strength and endurance, especially of the rotator cuff.

[Zona of the cranial nerves. Current aspects].

Recurrence of the chickenpox virus, herpes zoster localizes in cranial nerves in 30% of cases, with a predilection for the ophthalmic nerve. In young patients, clinicians must search for a herpes zoster-HIV association as well as oculomotor proprioception impairment in herpes zoster ophthalmicus. Enhanced MRI allows good objective view of the facial nerve lesions in herpes zoster facial paralysis. Finally, the gravity and aftereffects of cephalic herpes zoster can be decreased by an appropriate therapeutic approach.

Current Concepts in Acute and Chronic Lateral Ankle Instability.

Injuries to the lateral ankle ligaments are among the most common sports injuries in both professional athletes and the general population. Adequate management with consequent bracing after excluding relevant concomitant injuries, and functional aftertreatment, including balance and proprioceptive training, are crucial in preventing chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI). It is estimated that CLAI develops in approximately 25% of patients following an ankle sprain. The condition is divided into mechanical and functional instability. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, but imaging such as X-rays

Reafferent head-movement signals carried by pursuit neurons of the simian frontal eye fields during head movements.

The smooth-pursuit system is important to precisely track a slowly moving object and maintain its image on the foveae during movement. During whole-body rotation, the smooth-pursuit system interacts with the vestibular system. The caudal part of the frontal eye fields (FEF) contains smooth pursuit-related neurons that signal eye velocity during pursuit. The majority of them receives vestibular inputs and signal gaze-velocity during passive whole-body rotation. It was asked whether discharge modulation of FEF pursuit neurons during head rotation on the stationary trunk could be accounted for by

[Alterations in postural control: the use of spectral analysis in stability measurement].

UNLABELLED: Static posturography studies the frequency at which the center of gravity in the human body oscillates. There is no universal agreement as to the importance of this index or whether it is specific in identifying alterations in the postural control systems (vestibular, proprioceptive and visual). Nevertheless, some hypotheses appear generally accepted: a) visual information dominates; b) proprioception affects anterior-posterior oscillation; c) relatively low frequency body oscillation is affected by vestibular input while higher frequency oscillations are controlled by propriocepti…

Neuropathic arthropathy of the knee associated with an intra-articular neurofibroma in a child.

We describe a five-year-old child with neurofibromatosis type I who developed a Charcot knee. Infiltration of the joint by tissue associated with the disease caused damage to the proprioceptive mechanism and resulted in severe joint instability, accelerated destruction and development of neuropathic arthropathy.

Comparative effects of platelet-rich plasma, exercise therapy, and myofascial superficial back line manual therapy on balance, posture, and function in chronic ankle instability: A three arm randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability is a musculoskeletal disorder involving repeated ankle sprains, reduced joint position sense, and postural imbalance. Although exercise-based rehabilitation is essential, variations in program design and a focus on local stabilization limit overall effectiveness. PURPOSE: This randomized controlled study compared platelet-rich plasma injection, platelet-rich plasma combined with a structured exercise program, and manual therapy focusing on the myofascial superficial back line in terms of pain, proprioception, posture, balance, and function. The Dissociative Subtype of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Unique Resting-State Functional Connectivity of Basolateral and Centromedial Amygdala Complexes.

Previous studies point towards differential connectivity patterns among basolateral (BLA) and centromedial (CMA) amygdala regions in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as compared with controls. Here we describe the first study to compare directly connectivity patterns of the BLA and CMA complexes between PTSD patients with and without the dissociative subtype (PTSD+DS and PTSD-DS, respectively). Amygdala connectivity to regulatory prefrontal regions and parietal regions involved in consciousness and proprioception were expected to differ between these two groups based on diffe…

Effect of Rhythmic Stabilization Technique Versus Conventional Strengthening on Joint Stability, Pain, and Walking Performance in Chronic Ankle Instability.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is one of the consequences of repeated sprains of the lateral aspect of an ankle joint, characterized by frequent episodes of the ankle giving way, pain, impaired proprioception, and reduced functional performance. In rehabilitation, traditional strengthening exercises are often performed; however, interventions targeting neuromuscular control and dynamic joint stabilization may provide superior outcomes. Rhythmic stabilization technique (RST), a proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation technique, promotes co-contraction of agonist and antagonist mu…
