Olfactory sensory and perceptual evaluation in newborn infants: A systematic review.

Fetuses are able to process olfactory stimuli present in the womb and continue to show a preference for these odors for months after birth. Despite the accumulated knowledge about their early ability to perceive odors, there is a lack of validated scales for odor response in newborns. The evaluation of reactions of the olfactory system to environmental stimuli in infants has been defined by methodological theoretical approaches of experimental and clinical assessment tools. These approaches are mainly based on psychophysical approaches and predominantly use behavioral and physiological measure

A thorough investigation on pushing activities in industry: The impact of the variation in the speed of motion and load conditions on initial and sustained forces.

Pushing and pulling wheeled objects represent a significant part of manual material handling activities in industry. Medical investigations and epidemiological studies proved the correlation between such activities and the occurrence of lumbago, low back pain and adverse effects on the shoulders. The ISO 11228-2:2007 provides the recommended limits for pushing and pulling. Such values are the results of psychophysical studies realized under prescribed speed conditions referring to a slow walk. However, observation of real industrial and service sector environments reveals that workers are requ

Amelioration of obsessive-compulsive disorder in three mouse models treated with one epigenetic drug: unraveling the underlying mechanism.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Mental health disorders are manifested in families, yet cannot be fully explained by classical Mendelian genetics. Changes in gene expression via epigenetics present a plausible mechanism. Anxiety often leads to avoidant behaviors which upon repetition may become habitual, maladaptive and resistant to extinction as observed in obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD). Psychophysical models of OCD propose that anxiety (amygdala) and habits (dorsolateral striatum, DLS) may be causally linked. The amygdala activates spiny projection neurons in the DLS. Repetitive amygdala terminal stimulation in the

Dissociating the sequential dependency of subjective temporal order from subjective simultaneity.

The physical simultaneity between two events can differ from our point of subjective simultaneity (PSS). Studies using simultaneity judgments (SJ) and temporal order judgments (TOJ) tasks have shown that whether two events are reported as simultaneous is highly context-dependent. It has been recently suggested that the interval between the two events in the previous trial can modulate judgments both in SJ and TOJ tasks, an effect named rapid recalibration. In this work, we investigated rapid recalibration in SJ and TOJ tasks and tested whether centering the range of presented intervals on perc

Perception of Mechanical Impedance During Active Ankle and Knee Movement.

During locomotion, energy flow through the legs is governed by the mechanical impedance of each joint. These mechanical properties, including stiffness and damping, have recently been quantified at the ankle joint. However, the relevance of these properties in human sensorimotor control is unclear. An important aspect of sensorimotor control is the ability to sense small changes in stimuli. Thus, we investigated the human ability to detect small changes in the stiffness and damping components of leg joint impedance when interacting with a mechanical system coupled to the ankle or knee. The per

EEG correlates of cognitive time scales in the Necker-Zeno model for bistable perception.

The Necker-Zeno model of bistable perception provides a formal relation between the average duration of meta-stable percepts (dwell times T) of ambiguous figures and two other basic time scales (t0, ΔT) underlying cognitive processing. The model predicts that dwell times T covary with t0, ΔT or both. We tested this prediction by exploiting that observers, in particular experienced meditators, can volitionally control dwell times T. Meditators and non-meditators observed bistable Necker cubes either passively or tried to hold their current percept. The latencies of a centro-parietal event-relat

An update on pathophysiological mechanisms related to idiopathic oro-facial pain conditions with implications for management.

Chronic oro-facial pain conditions such as persistent idiopathic facial pain (PIFP), atypical odontalgia (AO) and burning mouth syndrome (BMS), usually grouped together under the concept of idiopathic oro-facial pain, remain a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Lack of understanding of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of these pain conditions is one of the important reasons behind the problems in diagnostic and management. During the last two decades, neurophysiological, psychophysical, brain imaging and neuropathological methods have been systematically applied to study the tri

Visual performance with real-life tasks under adaptive-optics ocular aberration correction.

We measured the effect of the correction of the natural aberrations of the eye by means of adaptive optics on the subject's performance on three different visual tasks: subjective sharpness assessment of natural images, familiar face recognition, and facial expression recognition. Images were presented through a dedicated psychophysical channel and viewed through an electromagnetic deformable mirror. Experiments were performed on 17 normal subjects. Ocular aberrations (astigmatism and higher order aberrations) were reduced on average from 0.366 +/- 0.154 to 0.101 +/- 0.055 mum for a 5-mm pupil

Vision in developmental disorders: is there a dorsal stream deficit?

The main aim of this review is to evaluate the proposal that several developmental disorders affecting vision share an impairment of the dorsal visual stream. First, the current definitions and common measurement approaches used to assess differences in both local and global functioning within the visual system are considered. Next, studies assessing local and global processing in the dorsal and ventral visual pathways are reviewed for five developmental conditions for which early to mid level visual abilities have been assessed: developmental dyslexia, autism spectrum disorders, developmental

Lichen ruber planus as a psychiatric problem.

Our mouth is the mirror of our health and it might be said that numerous diseases which affect our organism may be manifested in the mouth. Early symptoms occurring within the oral cavity may emerge with diseases related to our blood system, gastrointestinal system, renal system, cardiovascular system, and mental system. They are manifested as a hyperkeratosis, which may have an erithematous background. What we talk about here is lichen ruber planus. Lichen ruber planus is a common chronic immunological inflammatory disease of mucosa and skin, whose manifestations vary from karatolytic to erit

Diagnosis in a patient with fundus albipunctatus and atypical fundus changes.

We report a case of an 11-year old Caucasian female with nyctalopia since early childhood with an atypical clinical presentation of fundus albipunctatus (FA), and a novel mutation in the RDH5 gene. In addition to white spots in the fundus, patchy areas of hypopigmentation were noted, which were reminiscent for an early stage of retinitis punctata albescens (RPA). Electroretinographic testing (ERG) showed a non-detectable, dark adapted, isolated rod response and a markedly decreased combined rod and cone response to an achromatic stimulus. After patching one eye overnight, both the isolated rod

Global motion mechanisms compensate local motion deficits in a patient with a bilateral occipital lobe lesion.

Successive stages of cortical processing encode increasingly more complex types of information. In the visual motion system this increasing complexity, complemented by an increase in spatial summation, has proven effective in characterizing the mechanisms mediating visual perception. Here we report psychophysical results from a motion-impaired stroke patient, WB, whose pattern of deficits over time reveals a systematic shift in spatial scale for processing speed. We show that following loss in sensitivity to low-level motion direction WB's representation of speed shifts to larger spatial scale

Strabismic suppression is mediated by inhibitory interactions in the primary visual cortex.

Most strabismic observers do not suffer from double vision because of suppression from conscious perception of 1 of the 2 eyes' conflicting views. Direct evidence for the site and neural substrate of strabismic suppression has not been available so far, although psychophysical data suggest a cortical origin. On the other hand, cross-orientation suppression among conflicting stimuli presented monocularly has recently been shown to have a strong thalamic component. Here we present evidence, using both visual stimulation and pharmacological techniques, that strabismic suppression occurs in the pr

Auditory filter shapes of CBA/CaJ mice: behavioral assessments.

Auditory filter shape and frequency tuning may be derived by measuring changes in pure tone thresholds as a function of the bandwidth of notched-noise maskers. When these psychophysical methods were applied to CBA/CaJ mice, the resulting filter shapes were well fit by roex(p,r) functions originally developed for human subjects. The equivalent rectangular bandwidths (ERBs) of the filter shapes ranged from 16 to 19% of test frequencies between 8 to 16 kHz. These ERBs correspond well to the performance of humans at high frequencies and the limited number of mammalian species that have been charac

Combined behavioral and c-Fos studies elucidate the vital role of sodium for odor detection.

Salt, known as taste quality, is generally neglected in olfaction, although the olfactory sensory neurons stretch into the salty nasal mucus covering the olfactory epithelium (OE). Using a psychophysical approach, we directly and functionally demonstrate in the awake rat for a variety of structurally diverse odorants that sodium is a critical factor for olfactory perception and sensitivity, both very important components of mammalian communication and sexual behavior. Bathing the olfactory mucus with an iso-osmotic sodium-free buffer solution results in severe deficits in odorant detection. Ho

Auditory temporal information processing in preschool children at family risk for dyslexia: relations with phonological abilities and developing literacy skills.

In this project, the hypothesis of an auditory temporal processing deficit in dyslexia was tested by examining auditory processing in relation to phonological skills in two contrasting groups of five-year-old preschool children, a familial high risk and a familial low risk group. Participants were individually matched for gender, age, non-verbal IQ, school environment, and parental educational level. Psychophysical thresholds were estimated for gap-detection, frequency modulation detection, and tone-in-noise detection using a three-interval forced-choice adaptive staircase paradigm embedded wi

The neurogeometry of pinwheels as a sub-Riemannian contact structure.

We present a geometrical model of the functional architecture of the primary visual cortex (V1) and, more precisely, of its pinwheel structure. The problem is to understand from within how the internal "imminent" geometry of the visual cortex can produce the "transcendent" geometry of the external space. We use first the concept of blowing up to model V1 as a discrete approximation of a continuous fibration pi: R x P --> P with base space the space of the retina R and fiber the projective line P of the orientations of the plane. The core of the paper consists first in showing that the horizont

In vivo PET imaging and postmortem studies suggest potentially reversible and irreversible stages of brain metabolic failure in Alzheimer's disease.

In vivo brain imaging of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) using positron emission tomography (PET) demonstrates progressive reductions in resting-state brain glucose metabolism and blood flow (markers of synaptic activity) in relation to dementia severity, more so in association than primary cortical regions. During cognitive or psychophysical stimulation, however, blood flow and metabolism in the affected brain regions can increase to the same extent in mildly demented AD patients as in age-matched controls, despite reduced resting state values. The extent of activation declines with de

[Chalcosis oculi].

PURPOSE: To report on a patient including measurements of retinal changes in ocular chalcosis. PATIENT AND METHODS: After having suffered an open-globe injury presumably due to a small foreign body after a grenade explosion, a 30-year-old man presented six years later with ocular chalcosis including sunflower cataract, a multitude of tiny brownish particles in the anterior vitreous, a fibrillar degeneration of the posterior vitreous and brilliant patches overriding the foveal region. The patches were measured by confocal scanning laser tomography (HRT) and optical coherence tomography (OCT).
