Compulsive sexual behavior in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) is estimated to affect 3% to 6% of adults, although limited information is available on the true prevalence and impact of CSB in young adults. This epidemiological study aims to estimate the prevalence and health correlates of CSB using a large sample of students. METHODS: The survey examined sexual behaviors and their consequences, stress and mood states, psychiatric comorbidity, and psychosocial functioning. RESULTS: The estimated prevalence of CSB was 2.0%. Compared with respondents without CSB, individuals with CSB reported more depressive and…

Psychological follow-up of presymptomatic genetic testing for spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) in Cuba.

Presymptomatic testing for spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) in Cuba started five years ago. We have now investigated the psychological impact of test results on 150 individuals at 50% risk for SCA2. In a prospective study, psychological instruments were used to evaluate depression, anxiety and family functioning (1) before testing and (2) one year after disclosure of the test result. One year after, anxiety and depression levels decreased both in carriers and non-carriers, but anxiety decreased significantly more in carriers. Pathological levels of anxiety were seen mostly in members of dy

Psychiatric symptom severity in cocaine-dependent outpatients: demographics, drug use characteristics and treatment outcome.

Psychiatric symptom severity and associated characteristics were assessed in 185 individuals seeking outpatient treatment for cocaine dependence. The sample was divided into groups of low, medium and high psychiatric symptom severity based on Addiction Severity Index psychiatric composite scores. Patients with high symptom severity reported poorer pre-treatment functioning and more adverse consequences of cocaine use than the lower severity groups. Relationships between psychiatric severity and treatment outcome variables were assessed in a subset of 123 patients who received one of three 24-w

Psychosocial Outcomes of Parents of Children with Hirschsprung Disease Beyond Early Childhood.

PURPOSE: The lifelong impact of Hirschsprung disease (HD) upon children and their families is increasingly well recognized. Parental psychosocial wellbeing and family functioning are determinants of psychological and health-related outcomes in children with chronic conditions. We performed a cross-sectional cohort study to evaluate the psychosocial functioning of parents/caregivers of children with HD, beyond early childhood. METHODS: Parents/caregivers of children with HD, aged 4-14 years, managed at a tertiary pediatric surgical center were surveyed. Parent psychosocial outcomes, including …

Towards a standardized approach of assessing social context of persons receiving home care in Flanders, Belgium: the development and test of a social supplement to the interRAI instruments.

BACKGROUND: Apart from a person's physical functioning, the early identification of social context indicators which affect patient outcomes - such as environmental and psychosocial issues - is key for high quality and comprehensive care at home. During a home care assessment, a person's biomedical and functional problems are typically considered. Harder to define concepts, such as psychosocial well-being or living arrangements, are not routinely documented, even though research shows they also affect functioning and health outcomes. The purpose of this study is to develop and test a concise, i

Impact of psychosocial factors on medication level variability index and outcomes in pediatric liver transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers play an important role in maintaining a functioning graft after pediatric liver transplantation. Therefore, the psychosocial factors of both patients and caregivers can have a critical impact on transplant outcomes. Appropriate assessment and recognition of these factors pre-transplantation may allow transplant teams to better define the needs of pediatric organ recipients and develop specific countermeasures, which may then contribute toward improving transplant outcomes. METHODS: We studied 136 pediatric LT recipients followed at Texas Children's Hospital. Licensed so

Cardiac Rehabilitation for Adults With Congenital Heart Disease: Physical and Psychosocial Considerations.

Owing to significant medical advances, it is now estimated that more than 90% of persons born with congenital heart disease (CHD) will reach adulthood. Medically appropriate physical activity represents an opportunity to improve physical functioning as well as quality of life and psychosocial outcomes. By reviewing published CHD research and clinical recommendations, herein we first summarize how adults with CHD are known to be less physically active and have reduced exercise capacity compared with healthy peers. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing is important for routine clinical management and

Psychological support for children with diabetes: are the guidelines being met?

The significant role of psychosocial factors in the management of type 1 diabetes in youth has been well documented. The International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) therefore published the Clinical Practice Consensus Guidelines for psychological care of young patients. However, it is unclear if and how these guidelines are being implemented. A questionnaire was created to assess implementation of the guidelines and directed to physicians through the ISPAD listserve via a web-based survey. One hundred fifty-five participants from 47 countries completed the survey. Ninety

Physical activity level and age contribute to functioning problems in patients with breast cancer-related lymphedema: a multicentre cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer survivors face a high risk of developing breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). Besides physical symptoms such as swelling, BCRL can have a psychosocial impact and lead to problems in daily functioning. Understanding contributing variables to problems in functioning yields possibilities to improve treatment modalities and consequently patients' quality of life. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the association between patient-, lymphedema-, and cancer treatment-related variables with problems in functioning in patients with BCRL. METHODS: A cross-section
