In recent years, some cases of central precocious puberty (CPP) have been reported in patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Here, we report CPP in two girls with ASD. Peripheral precocious puberty results from peripheral production of sex steroids independent of activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal axis. It is much less common than central precocious puberty. Causes are variable and can be congenital or acquired. In this review, we will discuss the diagnosis and management of the most common etiologies including congenital adrenal hyperplasia, McCune Albright syndrome, familial male-limited precocious puberty, and adrenal and gonadal tumors.

Familial male precocious puberty is a form of precocious puberty resulting from an activating mutation of the luteinizing hormone receptor. Behavior problems are associated with the early onset of puberty. In this case, sexual hyperactivity was treated with psychostimulants. Implications for the effectiveness of methylphenidate in reducing sexual hyperactivity with and without familial male precocious puberty are discussed, and testable hypotheses are proposed for the effects of stimulants on sexual behavior in adolescents.
