Photoluminescence of Doped Superatoms M@Au12 (M = Ru, Rh, Ir) Homoleptically Capped by (Ph2)PCH2P(Ph2): Efficient Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Ru@Au12.

A series of doped gold superatoms M@Au12 (M = Ru, Rh, Ir) was synthesized by capping with the bidentate ligand (Ph2)PCH2P(Ph2). A single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that all the M@Au12 superatoms had icosahedral motifs with a significantly higher symmetry than that of the pure Au13 counterpart due to different coordination geometries. The Ru@Au12 superatom exhibited a room-temperature phosphorescence with the highest quantum yield of 0.37 in deaerated dichloromethane. Density functional theory calculations suggested that the efficient phosphorescence is ascribed to a rapid inters

Atomic versus molecular Auger decay in CH2Cl2 and CD2Cl2 molecules.

Autoionization spectra of CH2Cl2 and CD2Cl2 molecules after Cl 2p excitation are studied. The two molecular and atomic Auger transitions are examined and assigned. The contribution of atomic Auger transitions is lower in the deuterated molecule. In addition, to support the presence of the ultrafast dissociation mechanism in the dichloromethane molecule, a series of high-level ab initio quantum mechanical calculations were performed at multiconfigurational self-consistent field (MCSCF) and multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) levels of theory. Minimum energy pathways for the dissocia

Matrix-isolation and ab initio study of HKrCCCl and HXeCCCl.

We report on two new noble-gas molecules, HKrCCCl and HXeCCCl, prepared in low-temperature Kr and Xe matrices. These molecules are made by UV photolysis of HCCCl in the matrices and subsequent thermal annealing. The HCCCl precursor is produced by microwave discharge of a mixture of a matrix gas with trichloroethylene (HClC=CCl2). The assignments of the new noble-gas molecules are supported by deuteration experiments and quantum chemical calculations at the MP2(full) and CCSD(T) levels of theory with the def2-TZVPPD basis set. No evidence of ClXeCCH, which is computationally reliably stable, is

Low temperature synthesis of colloidal CdSe quantum dots.

In this study, the CdSe nanocrystals were prepared in phenyl ether and octyl amine to investigate the variations of their size, bandgap energy, and photoluminescence with growth time and temperature. The sizes of the CdSe nanocrystals were measured using High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), and found to be nearly monodisperse for relatively low growth temperature, 130 degrees C. Their optic properties were characterized by photoluminescence measurements, which showed that the colors of the nanocrystals could be controlled. The bandgap energies of the nanocrystals were calc

Theoretical study of the electrostatic and steric effects on the spectroscopic characteristics of the metal-ligand unit of heme proteins. 3. Vibrational properties of Fe(III)CN-.

The vibronic theory of chemical activation and quantum chemical calculations are applied to calculate the stretching vibrational frequency of cyanide, coordinated by the complex of ferric porphyrin with imidazole. The results show that the frequency of the stretching vibration of the cyanide strongly depends on its coordination geometry and is hardly affected by the electrostatic perturbations of reasonable magnitude. The comparison of these results with the experimental data on the cyanide complexes of different heme proteins and their models allows to elucidate the cyanide coordination geome

A Near-FCI Framework for Vibrationally Resolved X-ray Absorption Spectra.

We present a near-full configuration interaction framework based on iterative configuration interaction with selection and second-order perturbation theory (iCIPT2) for simulating vibrationally resolved X-ray absorption spectra. By combining high-fidelity potential energy curves with quantum wavepacket dynamics, our approach captures strong correlation and nuclear dynamics. Benchmarking on six diatomic systems yields sub-0.1 eV accuracy and quantitative agreement with high-resolution experiments. This work demonstrates a promising approach for interpreting vibrationally resolved core-level spe

Capturing Correlation Effects in Positron Binding to Atoms and Molecules.

A major challenge in contemporary electronic structure theory involves the development of methods to describe in a balanced manner the contribution of correlation effects to energy differences. This challenge can be even greater for multicomponent systems containing more than one type of quantum particle. In the present work, we describe a flexible code for carrying out self-consistent field and configuration interaction (CI) calculations on multicomponent systems and use it to generate trial wave functions for use in diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations of the positron affinity of Be, Be2

Synthesis, Photophysical and Electrochemical Properties of Spiro-Phosphonium Compounds.

A series of spiro-phosphonium compounds have been synthesized by copper-mediated coupling reaction of phosphacyclic compounds with alkynes. Their photophysical properties are tuned by varying substituents and exhibit different luminescent colors from blue to green, and finally, yellow. The fluorescence quantum efficiency of diethyl spiro-xanthenebenzophosphole 3aa in solid and liquid states reached 31% and 76%, respectively. Diphenyl spiro-xanthenebenzophosphole 3ad displayed relatively low cytotoxicity toward lung cancer cells A549 and was able to effectively penetrate the cell membrane and m

Manifestation of the interplay between spin-orbit and Jahn-Teller effects in Au25 superatom UV-Vis fingerprint spectra.

Atomically precise nanoclusters play an important role in nanoscale catalysis, photonics, and quantum information science. Their nanochemical properties arise from their unique superatomic electronic structures. As the flagship of atomically precise nanochemistry, the Au25(SR)18 nanocluster exhibits tunable spectroscopic signatures that are sensitive to the oxidation state. This work aims to unravel the physical underpinnings of the spectral progression of Au25(SR)18 nanocluster using variational relativistic time-dependent density functional theory. The investigation will focus on the effects

Experimental and quantum-chemical studies on the thermochemical stabilities of mercury carbodiimide and mercury cyanamide.

Calorimetric dissolution measurements of the solid compounds mercury carbodiimide HgNCN(I) and mercury cyanamide HgNCN(II) in aqueous HCl that targeted at their thermochemical stabilities show the cyanamide species HgNCN(II) to be the more stable phase in terms of both enthalpy and Gibbs energy with an enthalpy difference of 2-3 kJ mol-1. While the stability ranking of HgNCN(I) and HgNCN(II) thus perfectly matches Pearson's HSAB concept, quantum-chemical stability predictions using common parametrizations of density functional theory appear to be fundamentally flawed. An analysis of the error

Integrating Molecular Modeling and Nanoemulsion Characterization for Ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen (IBU), a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, exhibits low aqueous solubility and polymorphic behavior, which can compromise its bioavailability and pharmaceutical performance. This study investigated the structural, electronic, and supramolecular properties of two polymorphic forms of IBU and assessed their influence on the development and performance of emulsion-based delivery systems. The solid-state description included Hirshfeld surface analysis and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules complemented by density functional theory and electronic reactivity descriptor…

Multilevel quantum mechanical calculations show the role of promoter molecules in the dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether in H-ZSM-5.

Methyl carboxylate esters promote the formation of dimethyl ether (DME) from the dehydration of methanol in H-ZSM-5 zeolite. We employ a multilevel quantum method to explore the possible associative and dissociative mechanisms in the presence, and absence, of six methyl ester promoters. This hybrid method combines density functional theory, with dispersion corrections (DFT-D3), for the full periodic system, with second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) for small clusters representing the reaction site, and coupled cluster with single, double, and perturbative triple substitution (

Defect-Induced Single-Photon Emission in ZnPS3.

Research on single photon sources in layered materials has been limited so far to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) as hosting platforms. These quantum emitters exhibit advantages due to the distinct semiconducting and insulating characteristics of the two classes of materials, which enable their integration with van der Waals heterostructures and devices. Here, we report single photon emission in ZnPS3, which belongs to the MPX3 family characterized by stronger electronic correlations than those observed intrinsically in TMDs or hBN. We provide a compre

Improved semiclassical dynamics through adiabatic switching trajectory sampling.

We introduce an improved semiclassical dynamics approach to quantum vibrational spectroscopy. In this method, a harmonic-based phase space sampling is preliminarily driven toward non-harmonic quantization by slowly switching on the actual potential. The new coordinates and momenta serve as initial conditions for the semiclassical dynamics calculation, leading to a substantial decrease in the number of chaotic trajectories to deal with. Applications are presented for model and molecular systems of increasing dimensionality characterized by moderate or high chaoticity. They include a bidimension

Charge Transfer between Quantum Dots and Redox Molecules Is Not Auger-Assisted.

Charge transfer between quantum dots (QDs) and redox molecules is not well described by the Marcus theory, the hall-mark theory for charge transfer in molecular systems. The Marcus inverted region, where the rate decreases with increasing the free energy difference, has never been observed in QDs. The previously reported hypothesis for the absence of the Marcus inverted region in QDs is an Auger-assisted charge transfer pathway, which we refer to as the "Auger hypothesis". Here, we show that the Auger hypothesis does not hold to experimental tests. We measured the rate constants for two proces

Reactions of La and Ce with Propylamine: Formation and Threshold Ionization of Lanthanide Imido Radicals.

Metal-mediated activation of aliphatic amines offers a versatile route to structurally diverse molecules in organic synthesis. In this study, reactions of lanthanide atoms (Ln = La and Ce) with propylamine were conducted in a pulsed laser vaporization supersonic molecular beam source. A series of dehydrogenated Ln-containing species were identified via time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Dehydrogenated complexes with the formula Ln(NC3H7) were characterized through single-photon mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy, supported by quantum chemical calculations. Density Functional Theory for Molecular and Periodic Systems in TURBOMOLE: Theory, Implementation, and Applications.

This work provides a detailed overview of density functional theory (DFT) methods for treating molecular and periodic systems within the TURBOMOLE software package. The implementation employs Gaussian-type orbitals and is based on efficient real-space techniques and density-fitting approaches for Coulomb interactions. Recent developments are reviewed, including the treatment of relativistic effects with effective core potentials, the incorporation of spin-orbit coupling via two-component formalisms, and the extension to real-time time-dependent DFT (RT-TDDFT). Embedding schemes based on frozen
