BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cyst (DC) occurs in approximately 20% of jaw cysts, being the second major common odontogenic cyst, after radicular cyst. This oral lesion has the ability to destroy maxillary bones and could be the origin of several odontogenic tumors. However, molecules implicated in its pathogenesis as well as those involved in its neoplastic transformation remain unknown. OBJECTIVES: Determine the long-term outcome after resection of lumbar juxtafacet cysts.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Juxtafacet cysts are uncommon causes of radicular pain and are often associated with significant spinal degenerative disease. Previous studies have not focused on the outcome of patients who have undergone resection.

OBJECTIVE: We report a retrospective series of 13 patients who presented with symptoms and signs caused by cervical juxtafacet cysts. Clinical findings, radiographic features, surgical management strategies, and possible causes are reported and discussed.
METHODS: We reviewed clinical histories, radiographic studies, surgical notes, and pathological records of all 13 patients who underwent surgery for subaxial cervical juxtafacet cysts from 1984 to 1997 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. During the summer of 1997, surgical outcomes were assessed by direct or telephone interview.

This paper is a clinical report on the use of eggshell as a bone substitute in oral surgery. Five volunteers who presented with a cystic cavity of the jaw with a mean size of 2 x 1 cm, were enrolled in the study. After enucleation of the cyst, the cavity was packed with eggshell powder. The results were assessed by clinical examination and repeated radiological examination at 2, 4, and 6 weeks. Two operative sites were checked at 2 months for histological examination. Seven dental cyst epithelia were cultured in vitro and the conditioned media were analyzed for periodontal ligament fibroblast collagenase production. All the cyst epithelium-conditioned media stimulated fibroblast collagenase production, indicating that dental cyst epithelium, which is considered to be identical to the cell rests of Malassez, might play a role in periodontal pocket formation.
