The paper presents the results of a prospective trial to examine the natural history of early reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD). Thirty patients with post-traumatic RSD of the hand were observed without treatment. They were reassessed 1, 2 and 6 months after diagnosis with a final assessment at 10 to 18 months (average 13 months). Twenty-seven patients completed the study. BACKGROUND: Patients with progressive myoclonus epilepsy or progressive myoclonus ataxia often show a focal myoclonus, both spontaneous and reflex to somatosensory stimuli. Myoclonus is time-locked to large ("giant") electroencephalographic potentials. Previous authors have classified it as a "cortical reflex myoclonus," with the assumption that it invariably arises from an abnormal corticifugal neuron discharge.

One hundred newborn babies were investigated for H-reflex latency (H-RL) in between 33 to 40 weeks (wk) of post-conceptional age (PCA). Weekly data of both preterms (33 to 36 wk PCA) and fullterms (37 to 40 wk PCA) were compared. A significant reduction in H-RL was noticed at 37 wk PCA when newborns attain their term. The babies could be classified into preterms and fullterms by using their H-RL values.

This study addressed the issue of whether functional impairments can be identified or confirmed using tonal acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs). Tonal ARTs from 74 ears with functional impairments were compared to 10th percentiles of the ARTs for normal and cochlear-impaired ears at 500 to 2000 Hz (Gelfand, Schwander, and Silman, 1990). Electromyograms (EMGs) were recorded from surface electrodes over the sternomastoid muscles and averaged in response to brief (0.1 ms) clicks played through headphones. Electrophysiological improvement in the blink reflex latency after neurovascular decompression of the facial nerve in patients with hemifacial spasm is believed to be related to remyelination and occurs 2-8 months after surgery. We report a patient with hemifacial spasms for 3 years, in whom the increased blink reflex latency returned to normal within a week after surgery. This suggests that compression without demyelination may be responsible for increased blink reflex latency in some of the patients with hemifacial spasms.

In 46 patients with definite multiple sclerosis (MS) the direct and indirect pupillary light reflex latency (PLRL) and visual evoked potential (VEP) latency of the P100 were measured for each eye separately.
