Treating spider phobia using Neuro Emotional Technique: findings from a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Specific phobia, the most common anxiety disorder, can disrupt lives, limit work efficiency, reduce self-esteem, and strain relationships. Current interventions show some degree of success, yet relapse is common. Consequently, the need for a more effective and durable intervention is evident. The purpose of this pilot study is to investigate the efficacy of a new intervention, Neuro Emotional Technique (NET), on individuals with spider phobia, and to determine whether further investigation is warranted. METHODS: Participants who met the inclusion criterion that spider phobia impac

Biobehavioral intervention for older adults coping with essential tremor.

Four questions were addressed: (a) does biobehavioral intervention result in within-session reduction of tremor severity; (b) do relaxation and electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback training produce differential effects; (c) do within-session treatment effects generalize to daily performance; and (d) are reductions in tremor severity maintained at follow-up assessment? Three adults, ages 51, 77, and 83, each with a diagnosis of essential tremor (ET), and a long standing history of tremor of the hands uncontrolled by medication, took part. A repeated pre-post-training single-case experimental des

Medical care utilization and the transcendental meditation program.

This field study compared 5 years of medical insurance utilization statistics of approximately 2000 regular participants in the Transcendental Meditation (TM) program with a normative data base of approximately 600,000 members of the same insurance carrier. The benefits, deductible, coinsurance terms, and distribution by gender of the TM group were very similar to the norm, yet the TM group had lower medical utilization rates in all categories. Inpatient days per 1000 by age category were 50.2% fewer than the norm for children (0-18), 50.1% fewer for young adults (19-39), and 69.4% fewer for o

Prognostic factors with four treatment methods for phobic disorders.

The associations between prognostic factors and outcome with four treatment methods for phobic disorders were studied in 103 women. The prognostic factors were sociodemographic, intelligence, personality, early interpersonal relations, aspects of previous and current mental disorder, and intensity of symptoms at start of treatment. All patients received basal therapy, which implied information, advice on exposure in vivo, and anxiolytics. One group received this treatment only (B), while others received supplementary treatment, with therapist-directed prolonged exposure in vivo (PE), supportiv

Botox Injections for Esophageal Motor Disorders.

This article explores the evolving role of endoscopic botulinum toxin (BTX) therapy for esophageal motor disorders (EMDs). While BTX has been extensively used in achalasia, its primary application now lies in managing nonachalasia EMDs such as esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction, hypercontractile esophagus, and diffuse esophageal spasm. The article details BTX injection techniques for the lower esophageal sphincter, esophageal body, and upper esophageal sphincter, highlighting short-term efficacy and safety. It advocates BTX as a first-line therapy for these conditions, alongside smoo

Pharmacologic Treatment for Temporomandibular and Temporomandibular Joint Disorders.

Temporomandibular joint disorder is defined by pain and/or loss of function of the temporomandibular joint and its associated muscles and structures. Treatments include noninvasive pharmacologic therapies, minimally invasive muscular and articular injections, and surgery. Conservative therapies include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, benzodiazepines, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants. Minimally invasive injections include botulinum toxin, corticosteroids, platelet-rich plasma, hyaluronic acid, and prolotherapy with hypertonic glucose. With many pharmacologic treatmen

Use of ketamine in asthmatic children to treat respiratory failure refractory to conventional therapy.

We treated two pediatric patients suffering respiratory failure associated with status asthmaticus. Neither patient responded to maximal bronchodilatory therapy and mechanical ventilation; however, continuous infusion of ketamine (1.0 to 2.5 mg/kg X h) immediately improved airway obstruction. Ketamine appears to increase catecholamine levels and directly relax bronchial smooth muscle. Except for increased secretions during the infusion, our patients showed no immediate or long-term sequelae from ketamine therapy. However, ketamine should only be used for asthmatics whose respiratory failure do

Restructuring the Heart From Failure to Success: Role of Structural Interventions in the Realm of Heart Failure.

Heart failure through the spectrum of reduced (HFrEF), mid-range (or mildly reduced or HFmEF), and preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), continues to plague patients' quality of life through recurrent admissions and high mortality rates. Despite tremendous innovation in medical therapy, patients continue to experience refractory congestive symptoms due to adverse left ventricular remodeling, significant functional mitral regurgitation (FMR), and right-sided failure symptoms due to significant functional tricuspid regurgitation (FTR). As most of these patients are surgically challenging for open

Mesenchymal stem cell therapy associated with endurance exercise training: Effects on the structural and functional remodeling of infarcted rat hearts.

We tested the effects of early mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy associated with endurance exercise on the structural and functional cardiac remodeling of rats with myocardial infarctation (MI). Male Wistar rats (40 days old) were divided into 6 groups: control and exercise sham; control and exercise MI; and control and exercise MI MSC. MI was surgically induced and bone marrow-derived MSCs were immediately injected via caudal vein (concentration: 1 × 10(6 )cells). Twenty-four hours later ET groups exercised on a treadmill (5 days/week; 60 min/day; 60% of maximal running velocity) for 12 wee

[Electroconvulsive therapy in clinical practice].

Between September 1st, 1994, and the end of August, 1995, 3% of all inpatients (21 of 731) were treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) at the Department of General Psychiatry at the University Hospital for Psychiatry in Vienna. These patients suffered from psychotic and/or therapy-resistant depression (n = 15), therapy-resistant schizoaffective psychosis (n = 3), and catatonic schizophrenia (n = 3). ECT was administered in short-time anaesthetised and muscle relaxed patients. On average, each patient was treated with ECT on 9 non-consecutive days. As a rule, electrodes were placed unilat

Guidelines for Reducing the Adverse Effects of Shift Work on Nursing Staff: A Systematic Review.

BackgroundThe increasing demand for care in hospital settings, often at a high intensity, requires organizing work according to 24 h shifts. Nevertheless, shift work (SW), especially at night, alters the circadian rhythm, negatively affecting the psychophysical health of nurses, compromising their quality of life, and jeopardizing patient safety. Shift-work-related diseases (SWDs) can arise from these disruptions.MethodsThis systematic review aims to evaluate the effects of several types of medical, psychotherapeutic, and educational interventions and strategies on shift-work-related diseases

Predicting quality of life during and post detention in incarcerated juveniles.

PURPOSE: Besides reducing recidivism, juvenile justice institutions aim to rehabilitate juvenile delinquents, in order for them to reintegrate in society. As such, improving quality of life (QoL), especially post detention, is an important treatment goal. However, research is primarily focused on recidivism as an outcome measure for juvenile detention. The aim of the current study is therefore to describe and predict QoL of detained young offenders up to 1 year after an initial assessment, and to examine whether QoL differs between youth who are still detained versus released. METHODS: A samp
