Physico-chemical investigation of endodontic sealers exposed to simulated intracanal heat application: epoxy resins and zinc oxide-eugenols.

AIM: To gain information in a laboratory setting about the effect of thermal treatment of epoxy resin-based and zinc oxide-eugenol-based sealers. METHODOLOGY: AH Plus and Pulp Canal Sealer (PCS) were exposed to thermal treatment at 37, 47, 57, 67, 77, 87 and 97 °C for 30 s. According to clinically relevant considerations, intracanal sealer temperature is likely not to exceed 60 °C during warm vertical root canal filling. Heat application is recommended for less than 30 s during continuous wave technique, but might exceed this threshold in complex cases. Furthermore, heat treatment at 97 °C wa

Formation of chemical bonds on zirconia surfaces with acidic functional monomers.

We investigated the chemical interaction between zirconia surfaces and functional monomers using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Two types of zirconia disks cleaned with piranha solution were treated with one of two phosphate primers (Alloy Primer, Clearfil Ceramic Primer) or a carboxylic primer (Super-Bond C&B Monomer), and rinsed 3 times with acetone. XPS analysis revealed that phosphorus was incorporated into zirconia when the surface was treated with a primer containing phosphate monomer (10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate; MDP). However, the S 2p peak of a triazine dithi

Distribution of calcium ions at the interface between resin bonding materials and tooth dentin. Use of commercially available adhesive systems.

It has been proposed that calcium ions play a key role in chemical (chelate) binding between the adhesive resin and dentin surface. However, no data is available concerning how calcium ions are distributed at the binding sites. The aim of this study is to demonstrate calcium ions at the resin-dentin interface by means of X-ray microanalysis and calcium ion-sensitive histochemical staining. The dentin surface in human teeth was ground by use of 240 grit silicon carbide abrasive paper under running water and treated with the dentin-primer and adhesive resin in Clearfil Liner Bond System or IMPER

ANTIMICROBIAL ACTION OF A MODIFIED UNIVERSAL ADHESIVE: AN IN VITRO STUDY.

BACKGROUND: Resin composites and dental adhesives are widely used to restore carious teeth. A relatively new category of the dental adhesives, the universal adhesives (UAs) is considered user friendly because of its simplicity to use and compatibility with any adhesive strategy. However, the adhesive interface created by these adhesives is highly susceptible to cracking after polymerization which in turn facilitates the initiation of secondary caries. OBJECTIVES: The present study was set to evaluate the antimicrobial action of All Bond Universal Adhesive after modifying it with chitosan capp

13C NMR analysis of the etching efficacy of acidic monomers in self-etching primers.

It is well understood that the application of a self-etching primer enhances the bonding of the resin to the tooth. In this study, the demineralisation aspects by the Mega Bond Primer (MB) or the UniFil Bond Primer (UB) on the tooth were investigated by using liquid-state and solid-state 13C NMR techniques. The addition of hydroxyapatite or dentine to MB and the addition of dentine to UB resulted in the decrease in the peak intensity of the 13C NMR peaks attributed to the methacryloxy decyl phosphoric acid, MDP in the MB or 4-methacryloyloxy ethoxy carbonylphthalic acid, 4-MET in the UB. This

Detail reproduction of soft tissue: a comparison of impression materials.

The extent to which an impression material reproduces detail is influenced by factors such as viscosity, wettability, handling properties, and voids. This clinical study compared the ability of several impression materials to register soft tissue without creating voids and produce detailed gypsum casts. Thirty impressions of the hard palate of a single subject were made by use of a custom-cast metal framework serving as an impression tray. Six impression materials commonly used in clinical practice were tested. Die stone casts made from the impressions were evaluated and ranked by five judges.
