[Enhanced resistance to emotional stress through the use of D-phenylalanine].

Stress-protective action was studied of D-phenylalanine, having an ability to decrease destruction of endogenic enkefalins. In the experiments stability of the experimental (receiving D-phenylalanine) and control groups of male rats of August line to emotional stress was compared in conditions of immobilization stress by parameters of animals survival rate, adrenal glands hypertrophy development, involution of thymus, pathologic changes in lungs (abscesses development), ulcero-dystrophic disturbances in stomach, and also the activity and kinetic properties of enzyme tyrosin-hydroxylase in the

Evidence that a benzodiazepine receptor mechanism regulates the secretion of pituitary beta-endorphin in rats.

The effects of agents representing three classes of benzodiazepine receptor-acting drugs on circulating levels of beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity (beta-END-LI) were examined in male rats. The active benzodiazepine receptor antagonists, ethyl-beta-carboline-3-carboxylate (beta-CCE, 30 mg/kg), methyl-beta-carboline-3-carboxylate (3 mg/kg), and 2-phenylpyrazolo [4,3-c]quinolin-3(5H)-one (CGS-8216, 3 mg/kg), all evoked 3- to 4-fold increases in plasma levels of beta-END-LI as compared to control values. The beta-CCE-induced rise in circulating beta-END-LI was significantly attenuated by pretr

Are physical intervention techniques likely to cause pain or injury when applied to manage the severely aggressive older adult? A survey of physiotherapist's expert views in the UK.

AIM: To establish whether a professional consensus can be established amongst musculoskeletal physiotherapists or whether they believe certain physical intervention techniques would cause pain or injury if applied to an older adult. BACKGROUND: Physiotherapist involvement in the context of a multidisciplinary team framework to develop adaptive techniques as required for complex physical presentations has resulted in lower injury rates than in working-age adults. Physiotherapists are experts in anatomy and human movement and are ideally placed to contribute to the safe application of physical

Clinicians' Experiences With Providing Compulsory Nasogastric Tube Feeding: A Commentary on Offringa et al. (2025).

Compulsory nasogastric tube feeding (CNF) is often a traumatic event for patients and caregivers. Its impact on those administering it, however, is understudied. This commentary responds to the recent qualitative study by Offringa et al., which explores the experiences of clinicians involved in CNF. The authors highlight the physical and emotional strain on healthcare providers, and describe that they find themselves in situations in which the administration of CNF pushes their personal and professional moral boundaries. The clinicians' descriptions of their experiences encourage reflection on

Rheumatoid arthritis of the cervical spine--clinical considerations.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder affecting multiple organ systems, joints, ligaments, and bones and commonly involves the cervical spine. Chronic synovitis may result in bony erosion and ligamentous laxity that result in instability and subluxation. Anterior atlantoaxial subluxation (AAS) is the most frequently occurring deformity, due to laxity of the primary and secondary ligamentous restraints. Additional manifestations of RA include cranial settling, subaxial subluxation, or a combination of these. Although clinical findings can be confounded by the se

[Medical and legal aspects of rape. Referrals to a team for care of rape victims at the regional hospital in Trondheim during the period 1989-1992].

Since 1989 a special team of nurses and gynaecologist have taken care of rape victims at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University Hospital of Trondheim. Information on cases during the period 1989-92 was recorded retrospectively in a preformulated system. During this period, 141 persons were examined. In 23% of the cases the victim did not want to press charges. Most of the victims were young, 38% were below 20 years of age. A considerable proportion (40%) reported alcohol intake. 78% of the sexual assaults involved penile-vaginal contact. Severe physical violence, more severe

Effectiveness of ultra-rapid dose titration of clozapine for treatment-resistant bipolar mania: case series.

Treatment of severe and refractory manic episodes in hospital settings can occasionally be very difficult. In particular, severely excited patients showing aggressive, hostile, impulsive behaviours frequently require physical restraint and seclusion, high doses of antipsychotics and benzodiazepines, and sometimes, electroconvulsive therapy. Hospital stay is generally prolonged and such patients cause great emotional distress for other patients in the ward and clinical staff involved in their care. Here we report on three patients with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and one patient with a diag

Aggression and the termination of "rituals": a new variant of the escape function for challenging behavior?

Aggression and stereotyped behaviors are not uncommon among people with intellectual disabilities and they are often treated separately as operant behaviors. In this single case study, it is argued that the function of a young woman's aggressive behavior appeared to be that of avoiding or escaping the termination of a chain of complex stereotyped behavior (or "ritual"). She became aggressive only when this chain of stereotyped behavior was terminated and the aggression appeared to extinguish when it no longer led to escape from the termination of the "ritual". It is suggested that this is an e

Acute restraint stress exacerbates compulsive grooming in male Sapap3 knockout mice: Critical role of nucleus accumbens D2 receptors.

Intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors are hallmark features of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Acute stress is closely associated with the onset and severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unclear. Recent studies have implicated the nucleus accumbens (NAc) in the interaction between stress and compulsive behaviors. In this study, we used Sapap3 knockout (KO) mice, a validated model of compulsive grooming, to examine how acute restraint stress (ARS) influences compulsive behaviors and their neural correlates. Compared with wild-type con

The pretreatment of chronic restraint stress exerts little impact on the progression of heart failure in mice.

Stress is a potent risk factor for depression. Chronic stress can exacerbate and induce symptoms of depression. Clinical studies suggested that depressive patients are more likely to develop coronary artery diseases. However, the causal relationship between depression and heart failure progression remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to explore the relevance between stress and heart failure (HF) in a mouse model subjected to chronic restraint stress and left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) ligation. Mice were restrained for 3 h daily for 21 days and the processes were repeated on

Clinical course and prevalence of coercive measures: an observational study among involuntarily hospitalised psychiatric patients.

AIMS OF THE STUDY: In daily clinical work, coercion continues to be highly prevalent, with rates differing between countries and sometimes even within countries or between wards of the same hospital. Previous research found inconsistent characteristics of individuals who underwent coercive measures during psychiatric treatment. Furthermore, there continues to be a lack of knowledge on the clinical course of people after being involuntarily committed. This study aimed to describe the rate and duration of different coercive measures and characterise a cohort of involuntarily committed patients r

Regulation of the corticosteroid signalling system in rainbow trout HPI axis during confinement stress.

This study aims to shed light on corticosteroid regulation of stress in teleost fish with focus on the corticosteroid signalling system. The role of the mineralocorticoid-like hormone 11-deoxycorticosterone (DOC) in fish is still enigmatic, as is the function of the mineralocorticoid receptor, MR. Low plasma DOC levels and ubiquitous tissue distribution of MR question the physiological relevance of the mineralocorticoid-axis. Furthermore, the particular purpose of each of the three corticosteroid receptors in fish, the glucocorticoid receptors, GR1 and GR2, and the MR, is still largely unknown

Experimental studies on possible regulatory role of nitric oxide on the differential effects of chronic predictable and unpredictable stress on adaptive immune responses.

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of chronic predictable stress (CPS) and chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) on immunological responses in KLH-sensitized rats and involvement of NOergic signaling pathways mediating such responses. Male Wistar rats (200-250g) were exposed to either CPS or CUS for 14days and IgG antibody levels and delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) response was determined to assess changes in adaptive immunity. To evaluate the role of nitric oxide during such immunomodulation, biochemical estimation of stable metabolite of nitric oxide (NOx) and 3-nitro

Toll-like receptor 4 protects against stress-induced ulcers via regulation of glucocorticoid production in mice.

Stress-induced gastric ulcer is an important life-threatening condition, while the molecular basis of its development is incompletely understood. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), an innate immune pattern recognition receptor, can induce pro-inflammatory transcription, aggravating a stress ulcer. The present study found that TLR4 played a protective role in a mouse model of water immersion (23 °C) restraint stress. Wild-type (WT) and TLR4-/- male mice were respectively divided into five groups (5 per group), and exposed to the stressor for 0, 0.5, 1, 2, or 4 hours. Gastric ulcer index, determined p

Seclusion and enforced medication in dealing with aggression: A prospective dynamic cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, seclusion is historically the measure of first choice in dealing with aggressive incidents. In 2010, the Mediant Mental Health Trust in Eastern Netherlands introduced a policy prioritising the use of enforced medication to manage aggressive incidents over seclusion. The main goal of the study was to investigate whether prioritising enforced medication over seclusion leads to a change of aggressive incidents and coercive measures. METHODS: The study was carried out with data from 2764 patients admitted between 2007 and 2013 to the hospital locations of the Media

Short-term pre- and post-operative stress prolongs incision-induced pain hypersensitivity without changing basal pain perception.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress has been reported to increase basal pain sensitivity and/or exacerbate existing persistent pain. However, most surgical patients have normal physiological and psychological health status such as normal pain perception before surgery although they do experience short-term stress during pre- and post-operative periods. Whether or not this short-term stress affects persistent postsurgical pain is unclear. RESULTS: In this study, we showed that pre- or post-surgical exposure to immobilization 6 h daily for three consecutive days did not change basal responses to mechani

Role of adrenomedullin in the cerebrospinal fluid-contacting nucleus in the modulation of immobilization stress.

The contribution of the cerebrospinal fluid-contacting nucleus (CSF-contacting nucleus) and adrenomedullin (ADM) to the developmental modulation of stressful events remains controversial. This study explored the effects of endogenous ADM in the CSF-contacting nucleus on immobilization of stress-induced physiological parameter disorders and glucocorticoid hormone releasing hormone (CRH), rat plasma corticosterone expression, and verification of such effects by artificially lowering ADM expression in the CSF-contacting nucleus by targeted ablation of the nucleus. Immunohistochemical experiments

Unpredictable chronic mild stress not chronic restraint stress induces depressive behaviours in mice.

The chronic stress model was developed on the basis of the stress-diathesis hypothesis of depression. However, these behavioural responses associated with different stress paradigms are quite complex. This study examined the effects of two chronic stress regimens on anxiety-like and depressive behaviours. C57BL/6 mice were subjected to unpredictable chronic mild stress or to chronic restraint stress for 4 weeks. Subsequently, both anxiety-like behaviours (open field, elevated plus maze and novelty suppressed feeding) and depression-like behaviours (tail suspension, forced swim and sucrose pref
