Cerebral blood flow and metabolism were studied in experimental hydrocephalus which was produced by intracisternal injection of kaolin in ca … studies were performed in the cerebral cortex, periventricular white matter, thalamus and midbrain reticular formation in hydrocephalic cats. In all of these regions, l-CBF decreased to about half of the control in both acute and chronic stages of hydrocephalus. CO2 reactivity to CBF was impaired only in the acute stage, while autoregulation of CBF was preserved in …

In two siblings affected with dementia, epilepsy and vertical supranuclear ophthalmoplegia, foam cells and sea-blue histiocytes were found in the bone marrow. Electron microscopy of skin and neuromuscular biopsies gave presumptive evidence in favour of a storage disorder. Postmortem examination of both cases revealed an intraneuronal polymorphous lysosomal storage in the central nervous system (in the cortex and in many nuclei e.g. the substantia nigra and the reticular formation of the brain stem). In the visceral organs with the spleen most severely affected, the inclusions had a different u…

The neuroanatomical location and cytological features of cholinergic neurons in the rat brain were determined by the immunocytochemical loca … t caudal part of the substantia nigra, and extended in a caudodorsal direction through the midbrain reticular formation into the area surrounding the superior cerebellar peduncle. In the studies described above, the intracerebral microinjection technique was used to study the actions of morphine at morphine-sensitive sites, the periaqueductal gray (PAG) and the midbrain reticular formation (MRF). In the PAG, morphine exerted dual actions: inhibitory and excitatory. In the MRF, morphine exerted an excitatory action only, indicating that the dual actions of morphine are dissociable and site specific. Following microinjection into the PAG, beta-endorphin exerted an inhibitory, and ACTH an excitatory, action, i.e., each duplicated one of morphine's dual actions. These resul…

We review the morphofunctional characteristics of pericytes and report our observations. After a brief historical background, we consider the following aspects of pericytes: A) Origin in embryonic vasculogenesis (mesenchymal stem cells, neurocrest and other possible sources) and in embryonic and postnatal life angiogenesis (pre-existing pericytes, fibroblast/ myofibroblasts and circulating progenitor cells). B) Location in pericytic microvasculature and in the other blood vessels (including transitional cell forms and absence in lymphatic vessels), incidence (differences depending on species,

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by abnormal beta oscillations (13-30 Hz) within the basal ganglia, which contribute not only to motor symptoms but also to sleep disturbances. In this study, we developed a computational model of the basal ganglia-thalamocortical (BGTC) network that includes the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN), to investigate the mechanism by which the abnormal oscillations disrupt sleep. The model incorporates key nuclei, neurotransmitter systems, and neural pathways to simulate sleep-related brain activity in Parkinsonian conditions. Our simulations show that abnormal

OBJECTIVE: To identify candidate biomarkers of walking recovery with motor tract integrity measurements using fractional anisotropy (FA) fro … he SCP in walk recovery may rely on cerebellar nuclei projections to the thalamus, red nucleus, and reticular formation. Our findings suggest that a set of white matter tracts, part of subcortical motor networks, contribute to walking recovery in patients with moderate to severe stroke.

Organized meningeal immune cell infiltrates are suggested to play an important role in cortical grey matter pathology in the multiple sclerosis brain, but the mechanisms involved are as yet unresolved. Lymphotoxin-alpha plays a key role in lymphoid organ development and cellular cytotoxicity in the immune system and its expression is increased in the CSF of naïve and progressive multiple sclerosis patients and post-mortem meningeal tissue. Here we show that persistently increased levels of lymphotoxin-alpha in the cerebral meninges can give rise to lymphoid-like structures and underlying multi
