Donald Nixon Ross, FRCS (4 October 1922 to 7 July 2014) was a South African-born British cardiothoracic surgeon, who developed the pulmonary autograft, known as the Ross procedure, for the treatment of aortic valve disease, and also performed the first heart transplant in the United Kingdom in 1968. Four active duty military personnel and two retired soldiers/military contractors were treated with spinal or peripheral nerve stimulators. All six personnel were able to deploy after the stimulators were placed. Five patients had no incidents during their deployments. Most African cases of chromoblastomycosis present with lesions on the arms or legs. We report the case of a 48 years old man, a retired professional hunter, living in the Haut-Ogooué province of Gabon. The patient presented with extensive lesions of the upper thorax and left shoulder but none on the limbs. Direct examination of crusts and skin biopsies revealed spherical, septated, pigmented bodies. Fonsecaea pedrosoï was isolated in culture. The patient was treated with ketoconazole (400 mg per day). After 9 months of treatment, improvement was noted but cure had not been achieved.

In the emergency department of Dover Air Force Base Hospital, a primary care facility for active duty, retired, and dependent patients, transcutaneous electrical neurostimulation was employed for six months as initial treatment for musculoskeletal pain in 34 patients with acute symptoms. Pain relief ranging from 0 to 100% was achieved in a variety of acute pain states. Only one patient did not obtain pain relief. Although some patients did not receive permanent relief from pain, a significant number of patients did benefit from this new modality.

The U.S. Department of Defense desires to reduce the impact of coronary atherosclerosis on its active duty, retired, and dependent populations. Electron beam computed tomography (EBCT) is currently the best way to noninvasively image the coronary arteries directly. Between August 1997 and February 1999, a total of 3,263 patients were scanned by EBCT in the Radiology Department at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
