We report a case of ureteral obstruction due to retroperitoneal fibrosis secondary to a solitary left internal iliac aneurysm. It has been reported that as a cause of ureteral obstruction, an internal iliac aneurysm without aortic and/or common iliac aneurysms is very rare. In the present case, magnetic resonance imaging was a useful modality to diagnose retroperitoneal fibrosis secondary to an internal iliac aneurysm as a direct cause of ureteral obstruction.

OBJECTIVE: An unusual case of retroperitoneal fibrosis with non-obstructive anuria is described and the therapeutic alternatives are discussed. METHODS/ RESULTS: Repeated obstruction of the double-J ureteral catheter and intense lumbar pain did not permit endourological management and surgery was required. Excellent results were achieved and the patient is asymptomatic 12 months postoperatively.

The authors present three cases of retroperitoneal fibrosis. Two of which were induced by bromocriptine (PARLODEL). These three cases followed up for three years without recurrence were treated with corticoïds and internal derivations (double J catheters) in two of the three cases.

Our experiences in the diagnostics, treatment and follow-up-course of 10 patients suffering from idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis are reported. The ureterolysis and temporary nephrostomy, initially as percutaneous nephrostomy, and a long-term immunosuppressive therapy is the treatment of choice. In the follow-up control ultrasonography and computerized tomography are valuable and the prognosis of the disease quoad functionem is good.

We present a case of retroperitoneal fibrosis associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and review the etiology of retroperitoneal fibrosis. The HLA antigens found were A2, AW33, B8, B17, DR3, and DR6. The HLA antigens associated with retroperitoneal fibrosis and SLE are discussed.

Lymphomatoid granulomatosis is a non-neoplastic lymphoreticular disorder that usually presents as primary lung disease. A case of lymphomatoid granulomatosis associated with retroperitoneal fibrosis is reported. The retroperitoneal fibrous tissue contained the same variegated lymphoreticular infiltrate that formed the lung tumor, suggesting that the disease may have begun in the retroperitoneum. An extensive immunologic evaluation of the patient revealed impaired cell-mediated immunity.

Ureteral obstruction causing renal failure is the most common complication associated with retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF). Initial management includes steroid therapy together with ureteral stenting. When these fail, ureterolysis is the recommended surgical procedure. However, this could be challenging and recurrence is common. The aim of the present case series was to assess the feasibility of inserting simultaneous bilateral subcutaneous pyelovesical bypass grafts (SPBGs) in patients presenting with RPF who had failed initial endourologic/surgical management.
