Tetramic acid and sesquicillin derivatives with anti-neuroinflammatory activity from Penicillium citrinum SMUC020.

Six previously undescribed 3-decalinoyltetramic acid (3-DTA) derivatives Penicitriequitins A-F (1-6), one previously undescribed meroterpenoid Sesquicillin G (7), together with three previously described meroterpenoids were isolated from rhizosphere fungus Penicillium citrinum SMUC020. Their structures were elucidated by extensive analysis of NMR spectroscopic data, modified Mosher's method, and quantum computed ECD calculations. The L-alanine in the tetramic acid moiety was established by Marfey's method. Compounds 1-6 feature an unusual oxidation pattern at C-3, which has rarely been observe…

Unsaturated constructed wetlands for the remediation of cylindrospermopsin and microcystin-LR.

The increasing risk of cyanotoxin contamination of water resources can be mitigated using nature-based solutions. However, removal mechanism … le to saturated systems despite shorter contact times. Associations between cyanotoxin attenuation, rhizosphere oxygenation, and prokaryotic biodiversity were found. Porous media had no statistically significant effect on cyanotoxin removal. The mlrA pathway was not consistently detected and most mlr-associated TPs were absent. Although these observations do …

Rethinking the soil core microbiome.

The concept of a core microbiome emerged from host-associated research to describe microbial members or functions conserved across clearly d … ic conservation may not be the most biologically meaningful target in highly heterogeneous soil and rhizosphere systems, where functional conservation may persist despite taxonomic turnover. Accordingly, 'core microbiome' should be reserved for microbial components explicitly demonstrated to be conserved across defined spatial, temporal, and environmental dim …

Phytotoxic effects of personal care products in agro-ecosystems: plant uptake dynamics and cellular perturbations.

Personal care products (PCPs) are a rapidly expanding class of contaminants of emerging concern owing to their ubiquitous use and frequent d … ation, and accumulation of PCPs in plants are governed by compound physicochemical properties, soil-rhizosphere interactions, and plant physiological traits. Once internalized, PCPs disrupt photosynthesis, redox balance, membrane stability, and growth, leading to phytotoxic effects and residue accumulation in edible tissues. This review synthesizes current kn …

Plant-mediated nitrous oxide emissions.

Plants are increasingly recognized as active contributors to nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes. However, the physiological and biochemical processes underlying these plant-mediated N2O emissions remain poorly defined. This review synthesizes current understanding of direct N2O production pathways within plants, including chloroplast- and mitochondrial-associated processes involving nitrate and nitrite reductases, as well as cytochrome-mediated reactions under specific conditions. Plant-microbe interactions in the rhizosphere and phyllosphere further influence N2O dynamics. Symbiotic nitrogen-fixing b…

Microbial reassembly-driven multi-niche functional compensation alleviates uranium stress in rapeseed.

BACKGROUND: Uranium (U) pollution harms soil and plants. It is still unclear how microbes help plants survive uranium stress in different ro … uranium stress. Plant growth, uranium content, and 16S rRNA sequences from four niches (bulk soil, rhizosphere, roots, leaves) were analyzed. RESULTS: Uranium predominantly accumulated in roots, with limited translocation to shoots. Uranium stress increased chlorophyll content but still induced chlorosis. Ecological niche shaped microbial community structur …

High-level prodigiosin production in Pseudomonas putida enabled by combinatorial metabolic engineering.

Prodigiosin, a bioactive tripyrrole pigment, exhibits a broad spectrum of biological activities-including antimicrobial, anticancer, and antimalarial properties-thereby holding significant promise for use in pharmaceutical applications and industrial biotechnology. In this study, three isolates of Serratia marcescens were recovered from the cabbage rhizosphere. Genomic analysis revealed a highly conserved prodigiosin biosynthetic gene cluster embedded within the chromosomes of all three isolates. Though prodigiosin production was detected in these three S. marcescens isolates, the relatively l…

ZnO Nanoparticles Enhance the Biocontrol Efficacy of Bacillus siamensis YZUS007 Against Sclerotinia Stem Rot of Brassica napus.

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum causes destructive sclerotinia stem rot and severe yield losses in global rapeseed production. The Bacillus biocontrol strain YZUS007 serves as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fungicides, yet its control efficacy fluctuates under complex field conditions. This study aimed to investigate whether low-dose ZnO NPs could enhance the biocontrol efficacy of YZUS007 and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. We isolated and identified the antagonistic strain Bacillus siamensis YZUS007 from the rhizosphere soil of healthy Brassica napus, which exhibited an in vitro p…

Modest Changes in Extracellular pH Impose Metabolic and Envelope Remodeling in Burkholderia thailandensis.

Burkholderia thailandensis is a commonly used surrogate for pathogenic Burkholderia species, yet how it adapts to changes in extracellular pH remains poorly characterized. Using quantitative mass spectrometry, we report here the relative proteomes for cells exposed to a change in pH from 7.0 to either 6.0 or 8.0, conditions that may be encountered in the rhizosphere. Acute exposure to mildly acidic conditions resulted in four proteins being depleted while four accumulated based on an absolute log2-fold change of 0.4. By comparison, a transition to mildly alkaline conditions resulted in accumul…

From Microbial Consortia to Ecosystem Resilience: The Integrative Roles of Holobionts in Stress Biology.

The holobiont paradigm, conceptualizing host-microbiome assemblages as functionally integrated entities, has fundamentally altered interpret … ticity to confront abiotic and biotic stressors. In plants, compartment-specific microbiomes (e.g., rhizosphere, phyllosphere) enhance drought tolerance or nutrient acquisition, while in animals, the gut microbiome modulates neuroendocrine and immune functions via multi-organ axes (gut-brain, gut-liver, etc.). Critically, we emphasize the role of microbial me …

Ferrihydrite level in paddy soil affects inorganic arsenic species in rice grains.

Rice is consumed by ∼50% of the global population, grown primarily in flooded paddy fields, and is susceptible to arsenic accumulation. Inor … red to the control. These results support ferrihydrite's intrinsic role in controlling paddy soils' rhizosphere chemistry. Our findings indicate that fresh reactive iron minerals are critical in the early formation of root iron plaque, which enhances the defense mechanism against arsenic. The findings may have implications for reducing toxic inorganic arsenic …
