Mindfulness for the self-management of negative coping, rumination and fears of compassion in people with cancer: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer and its treatments have the potential to significantly impact mental health, provoking feelings of anxiety, depression, and distress, which can last long after treatment is over. One of the most rapidly emerging influences in the healthcare field is mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), which are designed to cultivate present moment awareness, attentional flexibility, compassion and acceptance, to reduce physical and psychological distress. However, there is limited research into the efficacy of MBIs or disease specific MBIs in shifting negative coping, ruminative thinking

Examining How Racial Discrimination Impacts Sleep Quality in African Americans: Is Perseveration the Answer?

BACKGROUND: African Americans experience more problematic and disordered sleep than White Americans. Racial discrimination has been implicated in this disparity. However, the mechanisms by which discrimination disrupts sleep are unclear. It has been theorized that Perseverative Cognition (PC), characterized by recurrent patterns of reflective (i.e., rumination) and anticipatory (i.e., worry) negative thinking about personally relevant stressors, may reflect the functional mechanism linking discrimination to sleep. The present study is the first to empirically examine the dual components of PC

Consensus on components of psychological treatment for depression to reduce symptoms and target relapse risk factors in young adults: A modified Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: Depression is increasingly prevalent in young adults and relapse is common. This study aimed to obtain consensus on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)-based treatment components considered important by experts for reducing symptoms and targeting relapse risk factors in young adults (18-25 years). METHODS: We conducted a modified-Delphi study of three survey rounds, two panels and a consensus meeting. Academics/clinicians (n = 46) and young adult experts-by-experience (n = 24) rated treatment components, therapist competencies, relapse risk factors and interventions, content of re

Short- and long-term effects of emotion regulation mediation on quality of life domains in transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral therapy (TD-CBT) has shown efficacy in reducing emotional symptoms and improving quality of life (QoL) in the primary care setting. However, less is known about the potential mediating processes of change, particularly the indirect effects through emotion regulation strategies (ERS). The present study aimed to examine whether cognitive reappraisal, suppression, negative metacognition, rumination, and worry (measured at post-treatment) account for the effect of TD-CBT (vs. treatment-as-usual [TAU]) on QoL domains (physical, psychological, socia

Probability, cost, and interpretation biases' relationships with depressive and anxious symptom severity: differential mediation by worry and repetitive negative thinking.

People high in depressive or anxious symptom severity show repetitive negative thinking, including worry and rumination. They also show various cognitive phenomena, including probability, cost, and interpretation biases. Since there is conceptual overlap between these cognitive biases and repetitive negative thinking - all involve thinking about potential threats and misfortunes - we wondered whether repetitive negative thinking could account for (mediate) these cognitive biases' associations with depressive and anxious symptom severity. In three studies, conducted in two languages and culture

Relationships Between Function, Pain Severity and Psychological and Cognitive Levels in People With Chronic Neck Pain: Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between pain and functional levels with pain catastrophizing, rumination, decision-making, and critical thinking in people with chronic neck pain. METHODS: The study included 62 patients with chronic neck pain who had presented to a physiotherapy center with pain complaints for at least 3 months. The visual analog scale for pain severity, the Neck Disability Index for functional level, the Pain Catastrophizing Scale, the Ruminative Thinking Scale, the Melbourne Decision-Making Scale I-II, and the Marmara Critical Thinking Inventory w

The importance of leader recovery for leader identity and behavior.

For individuals who hold leadership positions in their organizations, identifying as a leader day-to-day can have significant implications for their performance and interactions with followers. Despite the importance of leader identity, however, little is known about how leaders can start their workday in a cognitive state that allows them to identify more strongly with their leader role. Integrating recovery research with leader identity theory, we investigated the implications of psychological detachment and affect-focused rumination for leader identity and leader performance on a day-to-day

The Role of Gender in the Associations Among Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms, Anger, and Aggression in Russian Adolescents.

Symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been linked to anger and aggressive behavior in adult and veteran populations. However, research on the associations among anger, aggression, and PTSD in adolescents is lacking, particularly regarding differences between the sexes. To address this research gap, we used self-report data from Russian adolescents (N = 2,810; age range: 13-17 years) to perform a full path analysis examining the associations between PTSD symptoms and the emotional (anger traits) and cognitive (rumination) components of anger as well as physical/verbal and social

LONG-TERM OUTCOME OF MINDFULNESS-BASED COGNITIVE THERAPY IN RECURRENTLY DEPRESSED PATIENTS WITH AND WITHOUT A DEPRESSIVE EPISODE AT BASELINE.

BACKGROUND: In a previous randomized controlled trial in patients with three or more previous depressive episodes, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) appeared to be equally effective in those who were depressed and those who were in remission at the start of the trial. AIM: The aim of this study is to compare the 1-year outcome of MBCT in 124 remitted and 58 depressed patients who participated in the original trial and who were all offered MBCT either immediately or after a waiting period of 3 months. METHODS: The course of depressive symptoms, rumination, mindfulness skills, and qua

Moral emotions in mental health: regulation and mediation.

Moral emotions-such as guilt, shame, compassion, and gratitude-play a central role in shaping psychological functioning and mental health. This mini review synthesizes recent empirical and theoretical research on the regulatory roles and mediating mechanisms of moral emotions in mental health outcomes. It is demonstrated that moral emotions activate both adaptive (e.g., cognitive reappraisal, self-compassion) and maladaptive (e.g., rumination, suppression) regulatory processes that significantly influence emotional resilience or vulnerability. Additionally, psychological flexibility, emotion r

Social Self-Reappraisal Therapy for Social Phobia: Preliminary Findings.

The recent psychopathology literature suggests that individuals with social phobia overestimate social standards and are deficient in setting and attaining social goals, have a negative perception of themselves as social objects and show heightened self-focused attention when confronted with social threat. They further overestimate the potential cost of a social encounter, experience their anxiety as uncontrollable and visible to others, view their social skills as inadequate, rely on safety behaviors and avoidance strategies to control their anxiety, and engage in post-event rumination. Daily depression and cognitions about stress: evidence for a traitlike depressogenic cognitive style and the prediction of depressive symptoms in a prospective daily diary study.

The authors examined the stability and dynamic structure of negative cognitions made to naturalistic stressors and the prediction of depressive symptoms in a daily diary study. Young adults reported on dispositional depression vulnerabilities at baseline, including a depressogenic cognitive style, dysfunctional attitudes, rumination, neuroticism, and initial depression, and then completed short diaries recording the inferences they made to the most negative event of the day along with their experience of depressive symptoms every day for 35 consecutive days. Daily cognitions about stressors ex

Should treatment distinguish anxiogenic from anxiolytic obsessive-compulsive ruminations? Results of a pilot controlled study and of a clinical audit.

In a small pilot controlled study over 8 weeks, 12 obsessive-compulsive ruminators listened for 2 h daily to their own audiotaped voice either (1) describing their anxiogenic thoughts (exposure) but omitting anxiolytic thoughts (mental/cognitive rituals), or (2) reading neutral prose or poetry. Taking all patients, both groups improved similarly. However, exposure patients who became anxious early in exposure slightly more improved. Consistent with this, in a clinical audit of 57 ruminators treated by trainee clinicians over 12 years, outcome improved significantly once practice changed so tha

Mindfulness buffers the effect of negative affect on rumination: A daily diary study during a mindfulness-based intervention.

Negative affect automatically triggering rumination is a core pathological mechanism underlying emotional distress. While mindfulness is hypothesized to buffer this process, few studies have dynamically tracked these effects during systematic interventions. The study employed a single-arm daily diary design during an 8-week mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) to investigate whether daily mindfulness buffers the effect of negative affect on rumination. A sample of 116 participants with emotional distress completed daily assessments of mindfulness, negative affect, and state rumination during t

Physical activity and executive function in adolescents: Dual rumination pathways and mindfulness moderation.

BACKGROUND: Late adolescence is a developmental period in which executive functions are relatively consolidated but remain sensitive to behavioral and environmental influences. Physical activity (PA) has been associated with executive-function outcomes, but the psychological factors that may be related to this association remain unclear. Objective: This study examined whether PA_total was associated with a reaction-time-based executive-function composite (EF_RT) through intrusive rumination (IR) and deliberate rumination (DR), and whether mindfulness moderated the PA_total → IR and IR → EF_RT

Symphonic resonance: optimizing hypnotic suggestions with music to harmonize depression and rumination.

Depression is a complex, multi-dimensional disorder that is recognized as a leading cause of human suffering and disability. A wide variety of treatments, both physical and psychological, have been developed to lessen the burden on depressed individuals and those they may affect. Hypnosis has been shown to be an effective vehicle for delivering psychological treatments for alleviating depression in a number of studies, but it is always a challenge to increase the effectiveness of suggestions given in hypnosis. The addition of music to enhance hypnotic approaches has been studied and received s

Rumination, but not mood, predicts prospective memory performance: novel insights from a derived measure of trait rumination.

Prospective memory (PM) is the accurate execution of an intention in the future. PM may be negatively impacted by negative affect, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Rumination may increase the frequency of task-irrelevant thoughts, which deplete attentional capacity and reduce performance. To date, no studies have examined state and trait rumination on an online measure of PM. The present study examined the effects of state and trait rumination on an event-based, focal PM task embedded within a one-back task over multiple sessions. 95 non-depressed adults (18-53 years) completed me

Fears of positive and negative evaluation and their within-person associations with emotion regulation in adolescence: A longitudinal analysis.

Fear of positive evaluation (FPE) has recently emerged as an important aspect of social anxiety, alongside fear of negative evaluation. These evaluation fears peak during adolescence, a developmental stage that is also often accompanied by difficulties in emotion regulation, thereby increasing young individuals' vulnerability to mental disorders, such as social anxiety. We aimed to examine the longitudinal within-person associations between fears of evaluation, social anxiety, and three emotion regulation strategies (i.e., acceptance, suppression, rumination) in adolescents. Data were collecte
