Health-promoting housing policy in a changing climate: integrating affordability, security, and resilience.

Housing is a fundamental determinant of health, yet many housing systems fail to promote well-being or address growing challenges such as climate change, inequality, and urbanization. It is increasingly treated as an investment vehicle and as a commercial product supporting the construction industry, with substantial interactions with climate change, rather than its fundamental role providing shelter. This perspective addresses this gap by proposing an integrated framework for health-promoting housing policy that combines affordability, security, and quality, paying particular attention to the

Effluents from a Mexican reservoir: A toxicity mosaic inducing teratogenesis and neurobehavioral effects in Xenopuslaevis.

The Madín Dam, a reservoir located in the Mexico Valley Basin, is vital for supplying drinking water to the surrounding population. However, it receives urban and industrial discharges without efficient prior treatment. Given the lack of ecotoxicological data, this study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of Madín waters using the FETAX (Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus) protocol with Xenopus laevis as a bioindicator, and to assess behavioral responses of larvae exposed to effluents from different sampling sites during the first 96 hpf. The results showed that the reservoir is a mosaic of h

When one size does not fit all - New Zealand perspectives on the International Health Regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The International Health Regulations (IHR) form the basis of the World Health Organization's governing framework for global health security and have a key role in preventing the international spread of disease. The COVID-19 pandemic rightfully brought the 'fitness for purpose' of the IHR (2005) into question, spurring WHO Member States to embark on a process of amending and improving the Regulations. This process concluded in mid-2024, with a package of substantive amendments adopted through Member State consensus. Global commentary during the COVID-19 pandemic spotlighted issues with both the

It's a Dangerous Job! A Systematic Review of the Predictors of Correctional Officer Victimization by Incarcerated Individuals in U.S. Prisons and Jails.

Supervising people behind bars is inherently dangerous work, yet there is limited understanding of the risk and protective factors for correctional officer victimization. This study provides a systematic review of the predictors of violence perpetrated against U.S. prison and jail staff by incarcerated people. We identified 21 studies by searching six major academic databases (Criminal Justice Abstracts, Google Scholar, PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science). Most studies investigated staff assaults in state prisons with male populations, while fewer studies focused on staff in jails, female pr

MapReduce-based deep learning framework for potato leaf disease detection in sustainable precision agriculture.

Sustainable precision agriculture has become increasingly vital for enhancing crop productivity, minimizing environmental impact, and ensuring global food security. Potato leaf diseases, such as blight, pose significant threats to crop yield. The accurate and timely detection of potato leaf diseases is critical for minimizing yield losses. This study proposes a pair a lightweight MobileNetV3 classifier with a MapReduce-style data pipeline that parallelizes preprocessing and batch inference across nodes. The model utilizes a dataset comprising 2152 images categorized into three classes. The pre

Job Accommodations and Job Loss From Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis.

OBJECTIVE: Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) is a debilitating injury that affects a person's ability to communicate and swallow. Although clinical aspects are understood, how UVFP affects a person's employment and job security is poorly characterized. This study aims to elucidate how frequently patients request job accommodations or experience job loss related to UVFP. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SETTING: Thirty-four US tertiary care voice centers. METHODS: We analyzed data from a prospective cohort of patients with UVFP recruited from 34 vocal Cord Paralysis Experience (CoP

Forecasting influenza hospital admissions within English sub-regions using hierarchical generalised additive models.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal influenza places a substantial burden annually on healthcare services. Policies during the COVID-19 pandemic limited the transmission of seasonal influenza, making the timing and magnitude of a potential resurgence difficult to ascertain and its impact important to forecast. METHODS: We have developed a hierarchical generalised additive model (GAM) for the short-term forecasting of hospital admissions with a positive test for the influenza virus sub-regionally across England. The model incorporates a multi-level structure of spatio-temporal splines, weekly cycles in admis

Preventing empirical antibiotic treatment failure in migrant populations: screening by infection risk, not ethnic background.

Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) are a major international health threat. In many low and middle-income countries poorly regulated antibiotic use, limited surveillance, and inadequate sanitation give rise to high rates of antibiotic resistance. A resulting reliance on last-line antibiotic options further contributes to the emergence of MDROs. The potential for these pathogens to spread across international borders is a matter of considerable concern. However, this problem is commonly framed as primarily a threat to the health security of countries where resistance is not yet endemic. In f

Global Prevalence of Echinococcosis in Goats: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Echinococcosis is a foodborne parasitic zoonosis caused by the larvae of Echinococcus. This disease can affect goats and other mammals. In this study, a systematic review and meta-analysis for echinococcosis in global goats were performed based on the following five databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure [CNKI], VIP Chinese Journal Database, Wanfang Data, PubMed, and ScienceDirect). In total, 108,197 samples were collected. The global prevalence of echinococcosis in goats was identified to be 10.85% (3217/108,197). The prevalence of echinococcosis in goats was 6.16% (1369/22,208) a

Nonconsensual Sexual Experience Histories of Incarcerated Men: A Mixed Methods Approach.

Nonconsensual sexual experiences (NSEs) may contribute to mental health concerns among incarcerated individuals, yet NSEs are understudied in this population. This study takes a novel approach in examining the prevalence of NSEs among incarcerated males by utilizing both quantitative and qualitative measures. The sample consisted of 189 men from three provincial maximum-security prisons in Ontario, Canada. Based on quantitative findings, 44.2% of the sample experienced NSEs before the age of 18, and 41.7% of the sample endorsed an experience that fit the legal definition of a NSEs as adults. P

Indications for and Risks of Noninvasive Respiratory Support.

Within the last decades, therapeutic advances have significantly improved the survival of extremely preterm infants. In contrast, the incidence of major neonatal morbidities, including bronchopulmonary dysplasia, has not declined. Given the well-established relationship between exposure to invasive mechanical ventilation and neonatal lung injury, neonatologists have sought for effective strategies of noninvasive respiratory support in high-risk infants. Continuous positive airway pressure has replaced invasive mechanical ventilation for the initial stabilization and the treatment of respirator

Domestic violence in families in the Netherlands during the coronavirus crisis: A mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: The consequences of the coronavirus crisis are considerable for everyone in the Netherlands. Although there were concerns about the many vulnerable families who were forced to stay at home because of the measures taken by the government to contain the coronavirus in the Netherlands, there has been no increase in the number of reports of domestic violence or child abuse. OBJECTIVE: To gain insight by a mixed method study on what has happened during the lockdown within families who were already known to social services. METHODS: A quantitative study was performed among 159 families

Factors associated with referrals to high security forensic services among people with severe mental illness and receiving inpatient care in prison.

BACKGROUND: Prison mental health care is a significant topic which has been already studied and described in literature, particularly because of important implications both in the prison and in the health care system. It's not uncommon that inmates suffering from mental disorders are referred to high security forensic services (HSFS) but, to date, studies assessing factors associated with relevant referrals to these services are missing. So, the aim of our study is to investigate socio-demographic, criminological, psychopathological and toxicological variables among those who were referred to

Premotor functional connectivity predicts impulsivity in juvenile offenders.

Teenagers are often impulsive. In some cases this is a phase of normal development; in other cases impulsivity contributes to criminal behavior. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined resting-state functional connectivity among brain systems and behavioral measures of impulsivity in 107 juveniles incarcerated in a high-security facility. In less-impulsive juveniles and normal controls, motor planning regions were correlated with brain networks associated with spatial attention and executive control. In more-impulsive juveniles, these same regions correlated with the default-m
