We proposed that having mutually hostile interactions with others is a strong environmental stress factor that, together with diverse psychosocial problems, characterizes adolescents who self-harm. Using cluster analysis, this study examined the naturally occurring patterns of hostility conditions and psychosocial difficulties in a normative sample of 2,029 adolescents (50% boys; Mage = 13.89). Results showed that self-harming behavior was significantly higher among the subgroup of adolescents with mutually hostile interactions who exhibited both internalizing and externalizing problems than

The study aimed to examine the role of dissociation (persistent versus peritraumatic) in self-injurious behavior among at-risk Israeli female adolescents. In addition, the relationship between childhood sexual abuse, depression, dissociation, and potency was investigated. A convenience sample of 93 female adolescents aged 12 years to 18 years were recruited from institutions for at-risk adolescent girls in Israel. Participants were administered an anonymous self-report questionnaire that included six measures: Demographics, Dissociative Experiences Scale, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depre

Ego development and multiple self-images were studied in nonpsychotic psychiatric patients, diabetic patients, and healthy high school students. The results reported are drawn from the first year of a four-year longitudinal project investigating the psychosocial development and family interactions of impaired and at-risk adolescents. Both groups of patients, especially the psychiatric group, were significantly lower in their ego development and showed less self-image complexity than the high school students. These findings are discussed both in terms of understanding developmental deviation in

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of mental health issues in healthcare students is a growing concern. However, many healthcare students do not seek help because of the strong stigma attached to mental illness. This reluctance has been extensively researched, but a clear understanding of help-seeking behaviour among healthcare students remains elusive.
AIMS: To clarify the concept of help-seeking in order to develop effective strategies aimed at encouraging help-seeking behaviour in students.
METHOD: Concept analysis of help-seeking behaviour among nursing and medical students in the context of men

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive models assume that negative self-evaluations are automatically activated in individuals with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) during social situations, increasing their individual level of anxiety. This study examined automatic self-evaluations (i.e., implicit self-esteem) and state anxiety in a group of individuals with SAD (n = 45) and a non-clinical comparison group (NC; n = 46).
METHODS: Participants were randomly assigned to either a speech condition with social threat induction (giving an impromptu speech) or to a no-speech condition without social thre

BACKGROUND: Self-reported psychosis-like experiences (PEs) may be common in patients with mood disorders, but their clinical correlates are not well known. We investigated their prevalence and relationships with self-reported symptoms of depression, mania, anxiety, borderline (BPD) and schizotypal (SPD) personality disorders among psychiatric patients with mood disorders.
METHODS: The Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE-42), Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), McLean Screening Instrument (MSI), The Beck Depressive Inventory (BDI), Overall Anxiety Severity and Impairment Scale (OA

Symmetric, aligned and luminous smiles are usually classified as 'beautiful' and aesthetic. However, smile perception is not strictly governed by standardised rules. Personal traits may influence the perception of non-ideal smiles. We aimed to determine the influence of personality traits in self-rated oral health and satisfaction and in the aesthetic preference for different strategically flawed smiles shown in photographs. Smiles with dark teeth, with uneven teeth, with lip asymmetry and dental asymmetry were ordered from 1 to 4 as a function of the degree of beauty by 548 participants, of w

The first concepts for reproducing human systemic organismal biology in vitro were developed over 12 years ago. Such concepts, then called human- or body-on-a-chip, claimed that microphysiological systems would become the relevant technology platform emulating the physiology and morphology of human organisms at the smallest biologically acceptable scale in vitro and, therefore, would enable the selection of personalized therapies for any patient at unprecedented precision. Meanwhile, the first human organoids-stem cell-derived complex three-dimensional organ models that expand and self-organiz

Many people living with HIV desire childbearing, but low cost safer conception methods (SCM) such as timed unprotected intercourse (TUI) and manual self-insemination (MSI) are rarely used. We examined awareness and attitudes towards SCM, and the correlates of these constructs among 400 HIV clients with fertility intentions in Uganda. Measures included awareness, self-efficacy, and motivation regarding SCM, as well as demographics, health management, partner and provider characteristics. Just over half knew that MSI (53%) and TUI (51%) reduced transmission risk during conception, and 15% knew o

Differentiation between self-produced tactile stimuli and touch by others is necessary for social interactions and for a coherent concept of "self." The mechanisms underlying this distinction are unknown. Here, we investigated the distinction between self- and other-produced light touch in healthy volunteers using three different approaches: fMRI, behavioral testing, and somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) at spinal and cortical levels. Using fMRI, we found self-other differentiation in somatosensory and sociocognitive areas. Other-touch was related to activation in several areas, including

INTRODUCTION: Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic condition caused by an impairment in type I collagen production, resulting in several symptoms, including bone fragility and frequent fractures, bone deformities, and growth abnormalities. While physical characteristics of those with OI are well described, sexual experiences and challenges encountered by individuals with OI remain largely understudied. This study analyzed whether sexual esteem, sexual pain, desire, and emotional distress stratify between different self-reported OI types and health severity perception (HSP) groups. Se

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported protective effects of self-compassion and a growth mindset on youth suicidality. This study aimed to understand the mediating role of self-compassion and a growth mindset in the effects of intraindividual, behavioural, family, and school risk factors on youth suicidality under an ecological framework. METHODS: A school-based survey was conducted in four primary schools and 11 secondary schools across Hong Kong. Binary logistic regression and path analysis were conducted to examine the mediating and moderating effects of multiple factors on youth suici

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a major public health concern among adolescents, yet the individual and combined effects of socioecological factors on the development and persistence of NSSI remain underexplored.
METHODS: Based on the Youth Mental Health Promotion cohort (N = 46,782 adolescents with complete baseline and one-year follow-up data), we identified 2330 with newly observed NSSI and 1379 with persistent NSSI. Socioecological exposures were assessed across 62 factors spanning individual, family, and community/school levels. Then, we estimated the associations of each

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The current study examined emotion dysregulation and self-compassion as an intervention in individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms.
METHODS: College students who met criteria for GAD according to questionnaires and non-anxious controls participated in an anxious mood induction. Subsequently, participants were randomized to a self-compassion or control intervention.
RESULTS: Following the mood induction, the GAD group reported less self-compassion, more emotion dysregulation, more state anxiety, and more negative affect than the control group. I
