BACKGROUND: Self-sampling is a less costly approach that has been used for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 313 Portuguese women assessed the acceptability of cervicovaginal self-sampling.
RESULTS: Self-sampling was a well-accepted method [75.7%; 95% confidence interval (CI) 70.5-80.2], and the majority of women felt no pain (67.4%; 95% CI 61.9-72.5), no discomfort (70.9%; 95% CI 65.5-75.8) and no complexity (76.4%; 95% CI 71.2-80.9). The willingness to repeat self-sampling was high (89.5%; 95% CI 85.4-92.5). Compared to physician-sampling, women

Background We projected the clinical and economic impact of alternative testing strategies on COVID-19 incidence and mortality in Massachusetts using a microsimulation model. Methods We compared five testing strategies: 1) PCR-severe-only: PCR testing only patients with severe/critical symptoms; 2) Self-screen: PCR-severe-only plus self-assessment of COVID-19-consistent symptoms with self-isolation if positive; 3) PCR-any-symptom: PCR for any COVID-19-consistent symptoms with self-isolation if positive; 4) PCR-all: PCR-any-symptom and one-time PCR for the entire population; and, 5) PCR-all-rep

INTRODUCTION: The Curitiba (Brazil)-based Project, A Hora é Agora (AHA), evaluated a comprehensive HIV control strategy among men who have sex with men (MSM) aimed at expanding access to HIV rapid testing and linking HIV-positive MSM to health services and treatment. AHA's approach included rapid HIV Testing Services (HTC) in one mobile testing unit (MTU); a local, gay-led, non-governmental organization (NGO); an existing government-run health facility (COA); and Internet-based HIV self-testing. The objectives of the paper were to compare a) number of MSM tested in each strategy, its positivit…

BACKGROUND: The increases in STI rates since the late 1990s in Canada have occurred despite widespread primary care and targeted public health programs and in the setting of universal health care. More innovative interventions are required that would eliminate barriers to STI testing such as internet-based or mail-in home and community service testing for patients that are hard to reach, who refuse to go for clinician-based testing, or who decline an examination. Jurisdictions such as New Zealand and some American states currently use self-collected sampling, but without the required evidence

PURPOSE: As of 2019, only 14 states mandate confidentiality for HIV testing and 13 states have enacted similar regulations for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), respectively. Nevertheless, the impact of these protections remains inconclusive and underexplored. This study aimed to understand the relationship between these privacy statutes and self-reported HIV/STI testing history among 9th-12th graders in the US and assessed whether sex served as an effect modifier of these associations.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary, cross-sectional analysis with responses from the Youth Risk Behavi

BACKGROUND: Data is needed about barriers to self-collection of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) samples and cytology among low-income, disadvantaged women living in rural areas of lower-income countries as these women are at increased risk of cervical cancer mortality.
METHODS: Individual interviews (n = 29), focus groups (n = 7, 5-11 participants) and discussion groups (n = 2, 18-25 participants) were organized with women from three indigenous ethnic groups residing in rural areas in Mexico, after they were provided with free, self-sampled HPV tests. These groups are low-income, underserved by he

BACKGROUND: Smoking is a major risk factor for delayed wound healing and prosthetic joint infections, yet it is poorly identified and modified before surgery. Patients often omit or downplay their consumption, and objective methods of screening for smoking are lacking. Carbon monoxide (CO) breath testing is a validated, noninvasive tool to detect recent smoking but has yet to be used to screen patients planned for total joint arthroplasty (TJA). This study compares self-reported smoking status to a CO breathalyzer test in patients listed for TJA.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer disproportionately burdens low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Guatemala. Self-collection testing for human papillomavirus (HPV) has been suggested as a form of cervical cancer screening to facilitate access in LMICs. This study assessed and compared the acceptability of self-collection HPV testing in two rural, indigenous and ethnically distinct communities in Guatemala: Santiago Atitlán, Sololá and Livingston, Izabal.
METHODS: All participants, women between the ages of 18 and 60, completed a questionnaire. Eligible participants were also ask

To demonstrate the feasibility and acceptability of mobile point-of-care and near-patient testing for sexually transmissible infections, we offered services during an annual community event and surveyed event-goers. Forty-two participants were tested. When provided with options, the majority of participants chose point-of-care or near-patient testing. Trichomoniasis, chlamydia and gonorrhea were detected. All but one infected participant were notified and prescribed treatment. Participants responding to a written questionnaire reported sample self-collection and testing in a van as acceptable,

There is increased recognition that the brain processes a "sense of self" (best understood as a sense of "mineness") in the right hemisphere association area and which can be distorted due to neurologic injury. Although there are numerous descriptions of types of disorders of the self (e.g., asomatognosia, anosognosia, mirror misidentification disorder, Capgras syndrome, schizophrenia), there are few descriptions of the subjective experiences of individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) who experience a reduced sense of self. BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis infection (CT) is the most prevalent bacterial STD. Sexually active adolescents and young adults are the main risk group for CT. However, STD testing rates in this group are low since exposed individuals may not feel at risk, owing-at least in part-to the infection's largely asymptomatic nature. Designing new testing environments that are more appealing to young people who are most at risk of acquiring chlamydia can be an important strategy to improve overall testing rates. Here we evaluate the effect of a school-based sexual health program conducted among voc
