The role of socioeconomic and climatic factors in the spatio-temporal variation of human rabies in China.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a significant public health problem in China. Previous spatial epidemiological studies have helped understand the epidemiology of animal and human rabies in China. However, quantification of effects derived from relevant factors was insufficient and complex spatial interactions were not well articulated, which may lead to non-negligible bias. In this study, we aimed to quantify the role of socio-economic and climate factors in the spatial distribution of human rabies to support decision making pertaining to rabies control in China. METHODS: We conducted a multivariate an

Pre-exposure rabies vaccination among US international travelers: findings from the global TravEpiNet consortium.

BACKGROUND: People who travel to areas with high rabies endemicity and have animal contact are at increased risk for rabies exposure. We examined characteristics of international travelers queried regarding rabies vaccination during pretravel consultations at Global TravEpiNet (GTEN) practices during 2009-2010. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed bivariate and multivariable analyses of data collected from 18 GTEN clinics. Travel destinations were classified by strength level of rabies vaccination recommendation. RESULTS: Of 13,235 travelers, 226 (2%) reported previous rabies vaccination, and

New patterns of Trichinella infection.

Human and animal trichinellosis should be considered as both an emerging and reemerging disease. The reemergence of the domestic cycle has been due to an increased prevalence of Trichinella spiralis, which has been primarily related to a breakdown of government veterinary services and state farms (e.g., in countries of the former USSR, Bulgaria, Romania), economic problems and war (e.g., in countries of the former Yugoslavia), resulting in a sharp increase in the occurrence of this infection in swine herds in the 1990s, with a prevalence of up to 50% in villages in Byelorussia, Croatia, Latvia

Seroprevalence and Associated Factors of Camel and Human Brucellosis in Dire District, Southern Ethiopia: A One-Health Perspective.

INTRODUCTION: The public health and economic impact of brucellosis remain a significant concern in Ethiopia. The high seroprevalence rates observed in both camels and humans indicate the potential for cross-species transmission, highlighting the risk of brucellosis spreading. However, there is limited evidence concerning the relationship between brucellosis prevalence in humans and camels in the pastoralist regions of Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 390 camels and 390 camel farmers in the Dire district from November 2023 to March 2024, using multistage sampling.

Socioeconomic and ecological drivers of contagious pig diseases in free-range systems: Evidence from Gwembe Valley, Zambia.

Free-range pig systems support rural livelihoods in Zambia but increase exposure to contagious diseases through unrestricted movement, environmental contamination, and informal trade. We explored non-biological drivers of disease risk in Gwembe District to inform practical control strategies. We used Spatial Group Model Building (SGMB) with LayerStack mapping to engage 12 purposively selected value-chain actors (farmers, traders, transporters, and veterinary personnel). Participants co-produced spatial layers (settlements, production zones, markets, disease occurrence, service points), behavio

Digital engagement and knowledge about zoonoses among dog and cat owners in Rio de Janeiro: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The One Health approach highlights the interconnectedness between human, animal, and environmental health, reinforcing the importance of public awareness in preventing zoonoses, which remain major sources of emerging infectious diseases. Given the increasing popularity of pet ownership and the widespread use of mobile phones for accessing information, understanding how pet owners engage with digital health content is essential for guiding effective educational strategies. This study assessed the profile of dog and cat owners in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; their knowledge about zoonoses

Pet Ownership is Associated with Durable Viral Suppression but Presents Healthcare Access Challenges for People with HIV.

Human-animal interaction (HAI; e.g., pet ownership) may contribute to enhanced health and well-being among individuals managing chronic conditions like HIV; however, responsibilities associated with pet ownership may also prevent owners from accessing timely healthcare. This study investigates the relationship between pet ownership, pet-related barriers to healthcare (PRBH), and comfort derived from pets with durable HIV viral suppression among people with HIV (PWH) in Florida. We tested three hypotheses using survey data from the Florida Cohort Study linked with Florida Department of Health H

The Untapped Potential of One Health in Somalia: A Call for Cross-Sectoral Action Against Persistent Infectious Diseases.

Somalia faces recurrent infectious-disease threats shaped by interacting human, animal, environmental, and health-system vulnerabilities, including climate shocks, displacement, livestock-dependent livelihoods, weak water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) conditions, zoonotic risks, antimicrobial resistance, and uneven surveillance and laboratory capacity. This policy-oriented narrative commentary examines these interconnected risks through a One Health and health-system risk-management lens and proposes a region-sensitive framework for prevention, preparedness, surveillance, and response. Its ce

Animal board invited review: Benefits of livestock and animal-source foods in developing countries.

Livestock support the livelihoods of approximately 1.3 billion people across the world and contribute up to 80% of the gross domestic product of certain countries. In addition to roles as a vital source of food, fiber, manure, traction, status, and insurance, livestock are pivotal for women's empowerment, sociocultural norms and festivities, and a variety of ecosystem services. Livestock also contribute to circular bioeconomies by consuming only 14% of human-edible food, while repurposing poor-quality crop residues and agricultural byproducts into nutrient-dense animal-source foods (ASFs). Evaluation of human resources needed and comparison with human resources available to implement emergency vaccination in case of foot and mouth disease outbreaks in Tunisia.

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects domestic and wild artiodactyl animals and causes considerable economic losses related to outbreak management, production losses and trade impacts. In Tunisia, the last FMD outbreak took place in 2018-2019. The effectiveness of control measures implemented to control FMD depends, in particular, on the human resources used to implement them. Tunisia has the ultimate objective of obtaining OIE status as 'FMD-free with vaccination'. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the necessary and available human res

Sex-specific associations of autism spectrum disorder with residential air pollution exposure in a large Southern California pregnancy cohort.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects more boys than girls. Recent animal studies found that early life exposure to ambient particles caused autism-like behaviors only in males. However, there has been little study of sex-specificity of effects on ASD in humans. We evaluated ASD risk associated with prenatal and first year of life exposures to particulate matter less than 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) by child sex. This retrospective cohort study included 246,420 singleton children born in Kaiser Permanente Southern California (KPSC) hospitals between 1999 and 2009. The cohort was fo

[Exophiala on the Stored Apples: Evaluation with One Health Perspective].

The one health perspective is an integrative and holistic approach that recognizes the interconnection and interdependence of human, animal and plant health and aims to improve each sustainably. This perspective has gained particular importance following the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic and has been acknowledged as a component of public health. Fungal infections also pose significant risks to ecosystems, ranging from crops to animals and humans. These risks partly arise from human and animal mobility and have increased alongside climate change. Therefore, food safety has become an integra

Death by hyperventilation: a common and life-threatening problem during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

CONTEXT: This translational research initiative focused on the physiology of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) initiated by a clinical observation of consistent hyperventilation by professional rescuers in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. This observation generated scientific hypotheses that could only ethically be tested in the animal laboratory. OBJECTIVE: To examine the hypothesis that excessive ventilation rates during performance of CPR by overzealous but well-trained rescue personnel causes a significant decrease in coronary perfusion pressure and an increased likelihood of death. Behavioral Signature of Equine Gastric Discomfort? Preliminary Retrospective Clinical Observations.

Gastric ulcer disease and other potentially painful gastric conditions are among the most common afflictions adversely affecting the welfare of domestic equids. A large percentage of affected animals may not display the classic signs of gastric disease, such as unexplained weight loss, poor hair coat, and inappetence until the disease becomes severe. As a clinical service within our equine referral hospital, we routinely evaluate 24-h video recorded samples of horses to assist clinicians in identifying subtle discomfort and potential sources or to scan for infrequent neurologic or cardiac-rela

Transcriptomic dataset from peripheral white blood cells of beef heifers at weaning.

Reproductive failure of replacement breeding animals is one of the leading causes of loss to the beef production industry. The losses are further increased due to the inability to diagnose the reproductive potential of the beef heifer prior to the breeding season until the pregnancy outcome. To overcome this problem, a system to discriminate beef heifers with varying reproductive potential as early and accurately as possible is demanded. The omics technologies, such as transcriptomics, could predict the future reproductive potential of beef heifers. Therefore, this manuscript provides the gene

Amelioration of heat stress-induced damage to testes and sperm quality.

Heat stress (HS) occurs when temperatures exceed a physiological range, overwhelming compensatory mechanisms. Most mammalian testes are ∼4-5 °C cooler than core body temperature. Systemic HS or localized warming of the testes affects all types of testicular cells, although germ cells are more sensitive than either Sertoli or Leydig cells. Increased testicular temperature has deleterious effects on sperm motility, morphology and fertility, with effects related to extent and duration of the increase. The major consequence of HS on testis is destruction of germ cells by apoptosis, with pachytene

Progressive hearing damage after exposure to repeated low-intensity blasts in chinchillas.

Hearing damage caused by blast waves is a frequent and common injury for Service members. However, most studies have focused on high-intensity blast exposures that are known to cause moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), and fewer studies have investigated the progressive hearing damage caused by low-intensity blast exposures (below mild TBI). In this paper, we report our recent study in chinchillas to investigate the auditory function changes over the time course after repetitive exposures to low-intensity blast. Two groups of chinchillas (N = 7 each) were used in this study. Group

Tick-, Flea-, and Louse-Borne Diseases of Public Health and Veterinary Significance in Nigeria.

Mosquito-borne diseases are common high-impact diseases in tropical and subtropical areas. However, other non-mosquito vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) may share their geographic distribution, seasonality, and clinical manifestations, thereby contributing their share to the morbidity and mortality caused by febrile illnesses in these regions. The purpose of this work was to collect and review existing information and identify knowledge gaps about tick, flea-, and louse-borne diseases of veterinary and public health significance in Nigeria. Full-length articles about VBPs were reviewed and relevan

Design and Study of a Portable High-frequency Ventilator for Clinical Applications.

Treatment costs for ventilator-dependent patients are a substantial burden not only for their family but also for medical systems in general. Recently, using high-frequency ventilators have been shown to reduce the risk of lung injury through low-volume airflow. However, the machines used today remain bulky, costly, and only for use in hospital settings. To provide intermediate therapy for patients between hospitalization and complete discharge, a portable, light-weight high-frequency ventilator is an urgent need. This work presents the design of a portable high-frequency ventilator and a stud
