A strain of Naegleria fowleri, isolated from a child who died of primary amebic meningoencephalitis in Florida, was instilled in the nostrils of a sheep to determine whether livestock are susceptible to infection with free-living amebae. The animal died 7 days later from amebic infection of the central nervous system. N. fowleri were recovered from the brain and spinal cord of the animal. A control, saline-instilled sheep that had been pair-caged with the infected animal remained healthy.

A possible use of papain and trypsin immobilized on Biogel P-100 for purification of DNA-containing sheep smallpox viruses was studied. It was shown that the enzymes depolymerize tissue proteins, resulting in a 90% purification of the viruses without causing any considerable morphological changes in the virion structure. It was concluded that fixed proteinases can be effectively used at the final stage of purification of tissue virus-containing suspensions.

The lymph draining the prefemoral lymph node of a sheep infected with Trypanosoma congolense was examined over a period of 10 days. Only six trypanosomes were detected in 1500 ml of this fluid during this time, in spite of the animal having about 65,000 organisms/ml in its blood. It is concluded that the suggestion that T congolense is a strict plasma parasite is essentially proven for this specific situation.

In two experiments, compared to 10 control, 10 ewes were injected intramuscularly either with metallic copper dust or zinc oxide, suspended in purified olive oil. Copper injection raised the plasma and hepatic copper of the treated ewes. Similarly, injected zinc oxide produced a rise in plasma zinc. These increases started respectively on the 6th and 3rd day after the injection and lasted till the 21st or 17th day. No detrimental inflammation appeared. This form of treatment is therefore efficient against trace element deficiencies without any side effect.
