Response of mouse kidney to hyperthermia: pathology and temperature--dependence of injury.

Hyperthermia either alone or in combination with radiotherapy and chemotherapy is being used increasingly in the treatment of malignant tumors. This study was designed to evaluate the response of the mouse kidney exposed to a range of hyperthermic temperatures (41 to 45 degrees C) used to induce regression of malignant tumors. Minimal histologic evidence of renal injury occurred in the proximal tubules of the subcapsular region. More extensive damage was characterized by necrosis of tubules and glomeruli in a sharply circumscribed area that involved the lateral subcapsular area where the tempe

The relationship between body mass index and scrotal temperature among male partners of subfertile couples.

This study aimed to determine the relationship between scrotal temperature (ST) and body mass index (BMI). Data were collected from 471 male partners in subfertile couples who visited a Korean medical infertility center between March 2013 and November 2014. Participants were classified into three groups according to their BMI (<25.0, 25.0-29.9, and >30kg/m(2)). Scrotal temperature index (STI)(°C) was defined as the mean left and right skin temperature difference (ΔT) between the thigh and testicle. Mean STI and standard deviation (mean±SD) of the underweight and normal, overweight, and obese g…

Dermal burn during hip arthroscopy.

Radiofrequency devices are often used during arthroscopic surgery, most commonly of the shoulder and knee, and increasingly in hip arthroscopy. The most commonly described complication is elevation of joint temperature, leading to capsular shrinkage, chondrolysis, and nerve damage. A less commonly reported complication is that of dermal burns from the heated irrigation fluid. There are several case reports describing dermal burns after shoulder arthroscopy; however, to the authors' knowledge, there are none describing the complication in hip arthroscopy that is often performed by surgeons doin

Heat Loss Prevention (HeLP) in the delivery room: A randomized controlled trial of polyethylene occlusive skin wrapping in very preterm infants.

OBJECTIVES: To determine if polyethylene occlusive skin wrapping of very preterm infants prevents heat loss after delivery better than conventional drying and to evaluate if any benefit is sustained after wrap removal. STUDY DESIGN: This was a randomized controlled trial of infants <28 weeks' gestation. The experimental group was wrapped from the neck down. Only the head was dried. Control infants were dried completely. Rectal temperatures were compared on admission to the neonatal intensive care unit immediately after wrap removal and 1 hour later. RESULTS: Of 55 infants randomly assigned (

Is thermal scanner losing its bite in mass screening of fever due to SARS?

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a highly infectious disease caused by a coronavirus. Screening to detect a potential SARS infect … ental, and equipment variables. It is also limited by the fact that the thermal imager measures the skin temperature and not the core body temperature. As known, the body determines a temperature as its so-called "set point" at any one time during the body temperature regulation. Fever happens if the hypothalamus detects pyrogens and then raises the set point. The …

Thermographic assessment of patch-test responses.

Infra-red thermography was used to quantify, at patch test sites, the allergic responses to experimental preparations of nickel sulphate and primary irritant responses to sodium lauryl sulphate in small groups of volunteers. The technique was also used to assess the patch-test responses in a much larger group of patients who had undergone routine patch testing for contact allergy with a wide range of test substances and among which there were large numbers of allergic, irritant and equivocal reactions. Thermographically, when compared to the surrounding normal skin surface, the sites of allerg

Heat stress of gilts around farrowing causes oxygen insufficiency in the umbilical cord and reduces piglet survival.

Late gestating sows are susceptible to high ambient temperatures, possibly causing farrowing complications and reducing piglet survival. This experiment aimed to quantify in the days leading up to farrowing the impact of sow heat stress (HS) on farrowing physiology and survival of the piglets. Pregnant primiparous sows (gilts) were allocated to either thermoneutral control (CON, n = 8; constant 20 °C) or cyclical HS conditions (n = 8; 0900 h to 1700 h, 30 °C; 1700 h to 0900 h, 28 °C) from d 110 of gestation until farrowing completion. Gilt respiration rate, skin temperature and rectal temperat…

Air Ambient-Operated pNIPAM-Based Flexible Actuators Stimulated by Human Body Temperature and Sunlight.

Harnessing a natural power source such as the human body temperature or sunlight should realize ultimate low-power devices. In particular, macroscale and flexible actuators that do not require an artificial power source have tremendous potential. Here we propose and demonstrate electrically powerless polymer-based actuators operated at ambient conditions using a packaging technique in which the stimulating power source is produced by heat from the human body or sunlight. The actuating angle, force, and reliability are discussed as functions of temperature and exposure to sunlight. Furthermore,

Monitoring of PCO2 by skin surface sensors.

The methodology of cutaneous PCO2 measurement and the results of the first clinical studies performed with a newly developed sensor are reported. The in vitro data of the sensor are: sensitivity 55 mV/decade; response time tau 90% = 50 s; drift less than 10% per 24 h; no measurable interference by oxygen and anesthetic gases. At a sensor temperature of 44 degrees C, the correlation between arterial PCO2 and cutaneous PCO2 is significant, with correlation coefficients above 0.95 both in case of neonates and adult patients. The cutaneous PCO2 is, however, consistently higher than arterial PCO2,

Evaluation of the novel non-invasive zero-heat-flux Tcore™ thermometer in cardiac surgical patients.

Tcore™ Sensor is a novel zero-heat-flux thermometer that estimates core temperature from skin over forehead. We tested the hypothesis that this system estimates core temperature to an accuracy within 0.5 °C. 40 cardiac surgical patients were enrolled (960 measurements). Reference core temperatures were measured in nasopharynx, pulmonary artery and the arterial branch of the oxygenator of the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit. 95% Bland-Altman limits of agreement for repeated measurement data was used to study the agreement between Tcore™ thermometer and the reference methods. The proportion

Comparison of hyperthermic hyperventilation during passive heating and prolonged light and moderate exercise in the heat.

Elevation of core temperature leads to increases in ventilation in both resting subjects and those engaged in prolonged exercise. We compared the characteristics of the hyperthermic hyperventilation elicited during passive heating at rest and during prolonged moderate and light exercise. Twelve healthy men performed three trials: a rest trial in which subjects were passively heated using hot-water immersion (41°C) and a water-perfused suit and two exercise trials in which subjects exercised at 25% (light) or 50% (moderate) of peak oxygen uptake in the heat (37°C and 50% relative humidity) afte

Detection of suspicious pain regions on a digital infrared thermal image using the multimodal function optimization.

Automatic detection of suspicious pain regions is very useful in the medical digital infrared thermal imaging research area. To detect those regions, we use the SOFES (Survival Of the Fitness kind of the Evolution Strategy) algorithm which is one of the multimodal function optimization methods. We apply this algorithm to famous diseases, such as a foot of the glycosuria, the degenerative arthritis and the varicose vein. The SOFES algorithm is available to detect some hot spots or warm lines as veins. And according to a hundred of trials, the algorithm is very fast to converge.
