Opinion: Ocular features aid the diagnosis of Alport syndrome.

Alport syndrome is a common cause of inherited kidney failure but often goes unrecognized. Most affected families show an X-linked pattern of inheritance where affected males develop renal failure and hearing loss, and often lenticonus and retinopathy. Lenticonus is evident on both ophthalmoscopy and slit-lamp examination but retinal abnormalities are more obvious on imaging. Such abnormalities include a perimacular dot-and-fleck retinopathy and a peripheral fleck retinopathy, which might occur independently of each other; a 'dull macular reflex' or 'lozenge', when the perimacular flecks are c

Ocular features of Fabry disease: diagnosis of a treatable life-threatening disorder.

Fabry disease is a rare, life-threatening, and under-diagnosed disease, with distinctive ocular manifestations identifiable during a routine eye examination. The disease is caused by an inherited deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme alpha-galactosidase A, resulting in progressive accumulation of glycosphingolipids throughout the body. Long-term clinical manifestations include renal failure, early stroke, and cardiomyopathy. Recently, enzyme-replacement treatment has become available, heightening the importance of early diagnosis so that treatment can be initiated before irreversible organ damage

[Use of high-frequency ultrasound for foreign body imaging in chronic conjunctivitis due to microtrauma].

Conjunctivitis is a frequent disease mostly caused by infections. In the case of a single-sided manifestation and additional resistance to a … ncy ultrasound was used to locate an intrascleral foreign body 3 mm behind the limbus corneae while slit lamp biomicroscopy and ophthalmoscopy failed to detect the foreign material. The precise localisation provided by the 20-MHz sector scanner optimised the management of operative intervention and consequently led to an uncomplicated extraction of the bulb …

Optical coherence tomography of corneal and scleral melts.

Corneal and scleral melts can be difficult to assess by slit-lamp due to the overlying opacity. The authors demonstrate the role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the diagnosis and management of two cases of corneal and scleral melt. A high-speed anterior segment OCT system operating at a 1310-nm wavelength was used. Cross-sectional OCT images showed the depth and extent of the melt. OCT images were obtained through an opaque pannus in one case and through a calcium plaque in the other. OCT images at the follow-up examination revealed a thin fluid space between the amniotic graft and co

[The use of systemic and intravitreous steroid in inflammation secondary to intraocular cysticercosis: case report].

Cysticercosis is a parasitosis caused by Taenia solium eggs that could affect several tissues, such as heart, skeletal muscles, brain and eyes. This study describes the case of a 62-year-old male who complained of progressively loss of vision in his right eye for two months. Slit-lamp and ultrasound exams suggested a diagnosis of intravitreous cysticercosis. The patient underwent pars plana vitrectomy to remove the intravitreous parasite. Intraoperatively the cyst ruptured and leaked into the vitreous cavity. Therefore, 400 microg of intravitreous dexamethasone was injected intraoperatively, a

[Intracorneal invasion of the ciliary body by melanoma].

The authors report a case of a slow reduction of vision in the left eye of a 69-year-old woman. The slit-lamp examination of the eye showed a vascularized achromic subconjunctival mass close to the nasal limbus, invading the inferonasal corneal quadrant. At B-scan and standardized A-scan echography, the mass was shown to be localized to the ciliary body, with characteristics of a malignant melanoma. The patient did not want to undergo conservative treatment. Therefore, enucleation was performed and light microscopy revealed a pigmented malignant melanoma of the ciliary body with extrascleral g

Tear-deficient and evaporative dry eye syndromes of the horse.

Tear-deficient dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca), and evaporative dry eye, with some overlap between these two categories, are two major categories of dry eye recognized in the horse. Careful examination of the eyelid margins, the inner and outer surfaces of the upper and lower eyelids, assessment of blink and third eyelid movement, specific testing of tear production, assessment of corneal sensitivity, and slit-lamp examination of the ocular surface before and after fluorescein dye application is recommended to detect dry eye problems. Rose Bengal dye application is also recommended in man

[Hyperplastic persistent pupillary membrane--surgical procedure].

BACKGROUND: Persistent pupillary membranes are a common congenital anomaly seen in 95% of neonates. Extensive persistent pupillary membranes, occluding the visual axis and resulting in reduced visual acuity, are relatively uncommon. CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old male infant was seen in our hospital with reduced visual acuity of his left eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed a dense, extensive, persistent pupillary membrane associated with anterior polar cataract. We performed an excision of the pupillary membrane, lens aspiration of the lens material, posterior capsulorhexis, anterior vitrectomy an

Corneal endothelial photography. Three-year revision. American Academy of Ophthalmology.

When properly done, corneal endothelial photography has been shown to be a relatively safe, reliable, and effective means to ascertain corneal endothelial cell density (cells/ mm2) and to provide information about endothelial cell morphometry. Currently, this procedure is not essential prior to routine cataract surgery, but may be indicated in situations in which the cornea is suspected of having endothelial abnormality and in which the accuracy of the estimated cell count from slit-lamp biomicroscopy is thought to be less than satisfactory. These situations include but are not limited to (1)

Experimental corneal neovascularization: biomicroscopic, angiographic, and morphologic correlation.

Sequential slit-lamp examinations and fluorescein angiograms were performed on adult rabbits to define the morphological and functional maturation of new intracorneal vessels induced by chemical cautery. The vasoproliferation induced by this injury began as vascular sprouts from the preexisting pericorneal vessels and continued until there were well formed vascular loops carrying blood to and from the cautery site. Many vessels, particularly venules, then regressed. As defined by the fluorescein angiograms and microscopic examination of tissue sections, the final loops were formed by musculari
