Manipulation tactics of patients with neurotic disorders in everyday life and during therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition characterised by progressive depigmentation. The visibility of skin lesions, their location, and perceived social stigma can exacerbate emotional stress and reduce life satisfaction. For this reason, the condition can significantly affect mental well-being and social functioning. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between life satisfaction in individuals with vitiligo and the level of social support and degree of acceptance of illness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 215 individuals diagnosed with vitiligo. The

Relationship of depressive, conduct, and comorbid disorders and social functioning in childhood.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship of depressive, conduct, and comorbid disorders and social functioning in psychiatrically referred youths. METHOD: Subjects were 94 boys and 67 girls (mean age at initial assessment = 11.5 years) who were repeatedly evaluated with standardized instruments during a mean interval of 4.4 years. On the basis of their diagnoses during the follow-up, children were designated as having had depressive, conduct, or both (comorbid) disorders or other conditions. Two domains of social functioning were assessed: social competence and self-esteem. RESULTS: Longitudin

Effects of social exclusion on depressive symptoms: elderly Chinese living alone in Shanghai, China.

Research has identified social exclusion as one of the social determinants of health. There are risks of social exclusion in later life in recent years. However, despite the fact that China has the largest aging population in the world and reports a rapid growth in the proportion of older people living alone, research on the role of social exclusion on depression is limited. This study examined the effects of social exclusion on depressive symptoms in older Chinese who are living alone in China, based on the data from one Shanghai neighbourhood. The data used were obtained between August and O

Just do something: An experimental investigation of brief interventions for reducing the negative impact of post-event processing in social anxiety disorder.

Post-Event Processing (PEP) is prevalent and problematic in Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) but is typically not a direct target in evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for SAD. The primary aim of the current study was to examine the impact of several theoretically and empirically derived interventions for PEP in SAD, including concrete thinking, abstract thinking, and distraction in comparison to a control (i.e., do nothing) condition. Based on prior research, we hypothesized that the concrete and distract conditions would be associated with positive benefits, i

A proof of concept study on digital interventions for reducing socio-evaluative stress and anxiety in youth.

Youth often struggle with heightened sensitivity to social judgement, increasing their vulnerability to fear in social situations. This study investigates brief digital interventions aimed at regulating cognitive and affective disturbances related to social anxiety, specifically focusing on fear responses in a social-evaluative threat context. One-hundred-twenty healthy youth were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: attention training, detached mindfulness, slow breathing, or an active control condition. To induce social-evaluative threat, participants delivered a public speech after

Poor social performance of lonely people: lacking a skill or adopting a role?

A substantial literature has shown that lonely people differ from nonlonely people on a variety of measures of social performance. These differences have usually been conceptualized as a social skills deficit, which implies that lonely people lack the ability to perform appropriate and effective social behavior. Rather than a lack of this ability, the authors hypothesize that the adoption of passive interpersonal roles predisposes lonely people to exhibit inadequate performance. In order to test this hypothesis, lonely and nonlonely subjects were assigned to one of two roles: They either liste

'So, this feels very different and, you know, kindly': a mixed methods study of arts on prescription in secondary care.

Arts on Prescription (AoP) programmes occur within primary care and community settings. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of AoP delivered in secondary care, on patient wellbeing, social connection, and experiences of care. A mixed-methods design was used. Quantitative data were collected from 61 patients referred to AoP through secondary care outpatient services for cancer, chronic pain, weight management, breathlessness, or neuromuscular conditions. Wellbeing and loneliness were assessed pre- and post-participation in the AoP programme. Mood and loneliness were assessed before

Somatic and/or psychological conditions were noted in one-third of the 124 cases and social conditions in half of them. The neurologist is faced with the challenge of naming the symptom (most often labelled a functional disorder) and of making the decision to stop or limit investigations. Visits by patients with psychogenic disorders make up a signif …

Impact of Cohabitation during Confinement on Older Adults' Negative Affect: What Specificity of Life as a Couple?

BACKGROUND: Social isolation is a risk factor for older adults' physical and psychological health. The beneficial effect of social connections in times of major health events is undeniable. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether the positive effect of social support depends on the relationship type. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the influence of older adults' living conditions on the risk of experiencing negative affect during the first lockdown and post-lockdown. DESIGN: An epidemiological study conducted during the COVID-19 crisis, at the time of the first lockdown, and 2 t

Effect of Social Determinants of Health on Cognition and Risk of Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias.

Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, work, live, and age and the wider set of forces and systems that shape the conditions of daily life. They affect every area of life, particularly health and health care. There is increasing focus on modifiable factors that affect cognition and risk of Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRDs). This article examines the impact of various social determinants of health, which are potentially reversible, on the incidence, prevalence, and risk of ADRDs and cognition. Various social determinants of health affect cogniti

Social anxiety and its psychosocial impact on the lives of people with epilepsy.

Little is known about social anxiety among people with epilepsy (PWE), although PWE are more likely to be diagnosed with social anxiety disorder than the general population. The purpose of this study was to determine which psychosocial and seizure-related variables are associated with social anxiety. It was hypothesized that social anxiety would be positively correlated with perceived seizure severity, stigma, impact of epilepsy, fear of negative evaluation, and experiential avoidance. Further, social anxiety would be negatively correlated with epilepsy knowledge and disclosure of epilepsy. Fi

Quality over quantity? The role of social contact frequency and closeness in suicidal ideation and attempt.

BACKGROUND: Social support has been identified as a protective factor against suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Research has not conclusively identified the component of social support most implicated in suicidal thoughts and behaviors: (1) frequency of social contact or (2) closeness of relationships. This study examined the relationships between these facets of social support and suicidal thoughts and behaviors in two nationally representative samples, as well as subsamples with social anxiety disorder (SAD). METHODS: Study 1 variables for lifetime and past-year suicide ideation and attempt,

The protective effect of operant social reward on cocaine self-administration, choice, and relapse is dependent on delay and effort for the social reward.

Social reinforcement-based treatments are effective for many, but not all, people with addictions to drugs. We recently developed an operant rat model that mimics features of one such treatment, the community-reinforcement approach. In this model, rats uniformly choose social interaction over methamphetamine or heroin. Abstinence induced by social preference protects against the incubation of drug-seeking that would emerge during forced abstinence. Here, we determined whether these findings generalize to cocaine and whether delaying or increasing effort for social interaction could reveal poss

Decreasing body dissatisfaction using a brief conditioning intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Body dissatisfaction in females is common and a risk factor for the development of an eating disorder. This study tested whether body dissatisfaction could be improved using a brief conditioning intervention in which photographs of participants' bodies were selectively paired with positive social stimuli (smiling faces) and photographs of other bodies were paired with neutral or negative social stimuli (neutral and frowning faces). METHOD: 39 women (mean age = 22.46; 64.1% Caucasian) with high body dissatisfaction were randomized to either the evaluative conditioning intervention (

Influence of mild pain and/or sickness caused by lipopolysaccharide-induced clinical mastitis on the time budget, space use and social behaviour of dairy cows.

Cows suffering from mammary inflammation display 'individual-centred' pain and/or sickness behaviours; however, how they interact with their surroundings (physical environment, social context) is less documented. This study examined the effects of mild mammary pain and/or sickness on cows' daily activity patterns, spatial organisation, and social behaviours (dyadic interactions and social network metrics). Twenty-seven dairy cows were studied using a repeated-measures design over six observation days, comprising three 'non-challenge days' and three 'challenge days'. On each challenge day, a su

Multisensory processing of emotional cues in individuals with social anxiety: Evidence from event-related potentials.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have focused on how individuals with social anxiety process visual information. This study aimed to investigate whether social anxiety affects the processing of facial and vocal expressions when presented separately or together. METHODS: A total of thirty participants with social anxiety disorders (SAD) and thirty-one healthy controls (HC) took part in a forced two-choice emotion identification task. The task involved presenting expressions of anger and happiness through visual, auditory and audiovisual modalities while simultaneously recording the

Reaching people with disabilities to learn about their experiences of social connection and loneliness.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities experience higher rates of social isolation and loneliness than people without disabilities, but there is limited information about how these conditions are manifested in people with specific types of disabilities. OBJECTIVES: Using data collected as part of the second administration of the National Survey on Health and Disability (n = 2,132), our objectives were to determine if disability type and recruitment method added explanatory power to observed levels of social connectedness, after controlling for socio-demographic and environmental indicators. Neural correlates of the empathic perceptual processing of realistic social interaction scenarios displayed from a first-order perspective.

The neural processing of impulsive behavior is a central topic in various clinical and non-clinical contexts. To investigate neural and behavioral correlates of the empathic processing of complex social scenarios, especially considering ecological validity of the experimental procedure, we developed and investigated a video stimulus inventory. It includes realistic neutral, social-positive, and reactive-aggressive action scenarios. Short video-clips showing these social scenarios from a first-person perspective triggering different emotional states were presented to a non-clinical sample of 20
