Pathways From Cyber Victimization to Adolescent Depression: A Latent Profile and Bridge Network Analysis.

Cyber victimization is among the most consistent predictors of depression (DEP) in adolescence, yet research has largely treated both constructs as unidimensional totals, obscuring which specific victimization experiences activate which depressive symptoms and for whom. This study applied a person-centered and network psychometric approach to map these pathways in a cross-sectional community sample of 622 Turkish adolescents (55.0% female; M aɡe = 13.90 years). Latent profile analysis (LPA) identified three distinct subgroups based on self-esteem (SE), family affluence, and social media (SM) u

The network linking daytime sleepiness, chronotype, and emotional distress is bridged by anxiety and depression in young adults.

Emotional disturbances such as anxiety and depression are increasingly recognized to be closely associated with individual chronotype and levels of daytime sleepiness. A growing body of research is now exploring the complex interplay between daytime sleepiness, circadian rhythms, and emotional disturbances from diverse methodological and theoretical perspectives. Building on this foundation, the present study employed network analysis to examine the associations among chronotype, daytime sleepiness, and emotional disturbances. A total of 559 young adults (224 males, 335 females; mean age = 21.

Unravelling the complexity of suicidality: a network analysis of theory-driven and culturally relevant suicide risk factors in a country with high suicide rates.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore whether individual theory-based constructs are sufficient in explaining suicidality in a culture marked by high suicide rates and whether, if any, culturally relevant factors need to be considered additionally. METHODS: The study used a community sample of 1873 Lithuanian adults (age M = 43.61 SD = 16.96, 69.1% female). A survey using online and pen-and-paper formats was conducted, measuring suicidality, the main constructs from two predominant theories of suicide (thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, acquired capability for suicide, and defea

The tip of the iceberg: high-risk contacts for hemorrhagic fevers of swine in the Caribbean.

There are major gaps in understanding the transmission risk of hemorrhagic fevers of swine, such as African swine fever (ASF) and classical swine fever (CSF), in the Caribbean because animal-trade data are limited and fragmented. To address this gap, we reconstructed country-level directed trade networks from United Nations Comtrade data for 2022-2024 merged with participant input and analyzed them using social network analysis; nodes represent Caribbean jurisdictions with at least one trade tie, and edges represent reported movements of live pigs or pork products. Using these baselines, we co…

Making connections: exploring the centrality of posttraumatic stress symptoms and covariates after a terrorist attack.

Background: Posttraumatic stress symptoms are interconnected. Knowledge about which symptoms of posttraumatic stress are more strongly interconnected or central than others may have implications for the targeting of clinical interventions. Exploring whether symptoms of posttraumatic stress may be differentially related to covariates can contribute to our knowledge on how posttraumatic stress symptoms arise and are maintained. Objective: This study aimed to identify the most central symptoms of posttraumatic stress and their interconnections, and to explore how covariates such as exposure, sex,

Social functioning in adults with visual impairment from minority ethnic communities in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Visual impairment (V.I.) has been associated with a negative impact on social functioning, while social support can impact on well-being in those with V.I. Adults from minority ethnic communities (MEC) are projected to make up an increasing proportion of adults living with V.I. in the UK, but limited research has explored their social functioning. This article provides a preliminary insight into social functioning among MEC adults living with V.I. in the UK. METHODS: The article reports findings from a secondary analysis of V.I. Lives survey data. V.I. Lives was a UK telephone sur

The critical mediating roles of the middle temporal gyrus and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex in the dynamic processing of interpersonal emotion regulation.

Interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) is a crucial ability for effectively recovering from negative emotions through social interaction. It has been emphasized that the empathy network, cognitive control network, and affective generation network sustain the deployment of IER. However, the temporal dynamics of functional connectivity among these networks of IER remains unclear. This study utilized IER task-fMRI and sliding window approach to examine both the stationary and dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) of IER. Fifty-five healthy participants were recruited for the present study. Throug

Learning from social media: utilizing advanced data extraction techniques to understand barriers to breast cancer treatment.

Past examinations of breast cancer treatment barriers have typically included registry, claims-based, and smaller survey studies. We examined treatment barriers using a novel, comprehensive, social media analysis of online, candid discussions about breast cancer. Using an innovative toolset to search postings on social networks, message boards, patient communities, and topical sites, we performed a large-scale qualitative analysis. We examined the sentiments and barriers expressed about breast cancer treatments by Internet users during 1 year (2/1/14-1/31/15). We categorized posts based on the

Intrinsic brain network alterations in non-clinical adults with a history of childhood trauma.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma is a major social public-health problem worldwide. Previous literature suggests childhood trauma is associated with the development of psychiatric disorders and maladaptive behaviours later in life, but little is known about the neural basis underlying these associations. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to investigate intrinsic brain network alterations in non-clinical adults with childhood trauma. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected from 65 non-clinical adults with moderate or severe childhood traum

Perspectives of Gender-Diverse Youth and Caregivers Facing Gender-Affirming Medical Intervention Bans.

Purpose: In the past 2 years, nearly all 50 states have debated bills seeking to ban minors' access to gender-affirming medical interventions, with many being passed into law. This study documents gender-diverse youths' (GDY) and their caregivers' experiences as they grapple with how such laws impact their families. Methods: Sixteen GDY and 16 caregivers participating in a longitudinal study of the impact of gender-affirming care on GDYs' well-being were interviewed about how the legal and social discourse was impacting them and their families. When interviewed, some participants had completed

HIV transmission network analysis allows identifying unreported risk factors in HIV-positive blood donors in France.

OBJECTIVES: As sex between men is a major route of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in most western countries, restrictive deferral rules for blood donation have largely been implemented regarding men having sex with men (MSM). Here, we sought here to assign unreported HIV risk factors in blood donors (BDs) and reevaluated the MSM-associated fraction of HIV transfusion residual risk (%RRMSM ). METHODS: We applied a genetic distance-based approach to infer an HIV transmission network for 384 HIV sequences from French BDs and 1337 HIV sequences from individuals with known risk facto

When family betrays: kinship and infidelity in Turkish prime-time series.

This study explored how infidelity is represented in popular Turkish television dramas, focusing particularly on its prevalence within family and kinship ties. A qualitative content analysis was conducted on 19 prime-time series broadcasts on five major Turkish channels in 2022. Findings revealed that 95% of the series depicted infidelity, resulting in 39 unique encounters involving either sexual or romantic betrayal. Notably, 64% of these incidents occurred within family or kinship networks (e.g. brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins), while only 5% involved complete strangers. Infidelity

"After radiation sessions, I sometimes feel weak and dizzy'': Experiences of Ghanaian women with breast cancer post radiotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer remains one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality among females worldwide. Despite the advancement of several treatment options such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy to tackle this disease, several women still refuse these allopathic treatment options due to adverse effects posed by these treatment modalities which usually remain poorly identified and managed particularly in low-resourced-constrained settings like those in Sub-Saharan Africa. AIM: We explored the experiences of Ghanaian women with breast cancer being nursed after undergoing radiot

Transcriptomic shifts in Microtus ochrogaster neurogenic niches reveal psychiatric-risk pathways engaged by pair-bond formation.

Pair bonding (PB) is a stable affiliative relationship that confers profound behavioral and physiological advantages. The prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster), one of the few socially monogamous mammals, provides a tractable model for dissecting the neurobiological substrates of social interactions. We previously showed that social co-habitation with mating (SCM) increases cell proliferation and neuronal differentiation in the subventricular zone (SVZ) and dentate gyrus (DG), implicating adult neurogenesis in bond formation. Here, we characterized the underlying molecular programs by bulk RNA-s

Sustainability & social segmentation in social media contagion: A mathematical and computational study on dual effects of individual needs & peer influence.

Addiction to internet-based social media has increasingly emerged as a critical social problem, especially among young adults and teenagers. Based on multiple research studies, excessive usage of social media may have detrimental psychological and physical impacts. In this study, we are going to explore mathematically the dynamics of social media addiction behavior and explore the determinants of compulsive use of social media from the dual perspectives of individual needs or cravings and peer-related factors or peer pressure. The theoretical analysis of the model without the peer pressure eff

Social appraisal in chronic psychosis: role of medial frontal and occipital networks.

Persons with schizophrenia often appraise other individuals as threatening or persecutory. To evaluate social appraisal in schizophrenia, we probed brain networks with a task in which subjects judged whether or not they liked face stimuli with emotional expressions. We predicted that appraising negative expressions would engage patients, more than controls, and negative faces would be related to higher levels of negative affect and produce increased activity in the medial frontal cortex, an area involved in social appraisal. Twenty-one stable outpatients with chronic non-affective psychosis (1

Invisibility, hypervisibility, relational visibility, and collective adaptation: inuit experiences of disability.

Disability is increasingly understood as a socially and culturally situated experience shaped by relationships, environments, and systems of recognition. However, limited research has examined how disability is perceived and experienced within Inuit communities. This paper draws on a secondary qualitative analysis of interviews with 126 Nunavummiut across 12 communities in Nunavut, conducted as part of a community-led study by Nunavummi Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society. Guided by Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and the Piliriqatigiinniq Research Model, the analysis explores how disability becomes
