Reliability and validity of Oswestry Disability Index among patients undergoing lumbar spinal surgery.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to explore the internal consistency and factor structure of the Oswestry Disability Index among patients undergoing spinal surgery. The sample consisted of 1,515 patients who underwent lumbar spinal surgery at a university hospital between 2018 and 2021. METHODS: The patients responded to the Oswestry Disability Index within 2 months before surgery. Cronbach's alpha was used to assess the internal consistency. The factor structure was evaluated using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. RESULTS: The average age of 1,515 patients was 58.5 (

When the Social Foundations of the World are Disrupted: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Suffering in Pain and Stress Among Individuals Living with Chronic Pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a multidimensional experience shaped by biopsychosocial factors. How individuals appraise situations plays a key … tensity is not enough to explain suffering, the social aspects are essential; (2) pain disrupts the social structure of the world; and (3) there is a tension between social normality and the validation of lived pain experiences. CONCLUSION: This study contributes to a broader understanding of pain that moves towards an intersubjective conceptualization of pain-re …

Social interaction modulates the intensity of compulsive checking in a rat model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Here we present an empirical study that provides a basis for understanding the impact of the social environment on individuals with mental disorders. Rats treated chronically with the dopamine-agonist quinpirole offer a solid animal model for compulsive behavior that has been comprehensively evaluated and validated in numerous studies. Moreover, the method of behavioral analysis used in the quinpirole rat model has been similarly applied to the analysis of compulsive rituals in OCD patients, revealing similarities to the structure of compulsions in the quinpirole-sensitized rats. Here, we exam

Fine-scale genetic assessment of sex-specific dispersal patterns in a multilevel primate society.

Like humans, hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) are unusual among primates in having a multilevel social system and stable pair bonds, and are thus a useful model for the evolution of human sociality. While the kinship structure and sex-biased dispersal patterns that underlie human social organization have been extensively elucidated, the impact of these factors on the social system of hamadryas baboons is currently unclear. Here we use genetic analysis of individuals to elucidate the patterns of male and female dispersal across multiple levels of society in a wild population of hamadryas bab

Leveraging Social Networks and Technology for HIV Prevention and Treatment With Transgender Women.

Transgender women ("trans women") are disproportionately impacted by HIV; yet there are few interventions tailored for trans women. This study employed qualitative methods to better understand how trans women's social networks and technology-based networking platforms may be leveraged in developing health promotion strategies for this high-priority population. Qualitative data from five focus groups (N = 39) revealed three key themes: (1) Social network structure and composition; (2) Technology use patterns; and (3) Accessing transgender health resources online. Participants used technology to

Further psychometric evaluation of the Fear Questionnaire: responses of college students.

This study presents evidence for the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Fear Questionnaire for college undergraduates. Fit indices of the 4- and 5-factor models identified previously were inadequate. Exploratory principal components analysis identified three factors, using data from Sample 1 (n = 208). LISREL confirmatory factor analyses supported generalizability of the three-factor model to Sample 2 (n = 200). Satisfactory reliability coefficients were obtained for the factor-derived subscales. Significant gender differences were obtained on 4 of the 15 items but not on the

My heart will go on - quantitative content analysis of donor and donation images in patients after heart transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Heart transplantation (HTX), a treatment for end-stage heart failure, is accompanied by substantial psychological and physical strain for recipients. Many individuals develop Donor and Donation Images (DDI), referring to the thoughts and emotions directed toward the donor and/or the transplanted organ. The present study aims to systematically quantify the content dimensions of DDI and to explore their associations with psychological well-being and perceived organ acceptance. METHODS: A total of 407 adult post-HTX patients participated in the survey. A self-developed questionnair

Cooperative Learning Intervention Predicts Changes in Patterns of Friendship Networks Related To Peer Belonging and Cross-Group Ties.

Given the central role of friendships for adolescents social and academic needs and importance of identifying effective interventions to promote these outcomes, the present study examined interpersonal mechanisms through which a cooperative learning intervention changed adolescent friendship network dynamics related to self-perceived peer belonging and rejection. Specifically, we tested whether friendship network selection and influence on peer belonging and rejection varied in the intervention vs. control schools. It also examined whether the intervention promoted selection of intergroup frie

Psychometric properties of the Curiosity and Exploration Inventory-II among Kenyan adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Curiosity is a fundamental trait that drives exploration, motivation, learning, and growth. However, research on this character strength in sub-Saharan African populations is very scarce. To address this gap in the literature, we sought to determine the psychometric properties of the Curiosity and Exploration Inventory- II (CEI-II), a measure for trait curiosity, to provide evidence of validity for its use in research among populations in sub-Saharan Africa. We also aimed to assess for demographic and psychosocial correlates of curiosity among Kenyan high school students. METHOD

Gambling Motives: Application of the Reasons for Gambling Questionnaire in an Australian Population Survey.

The Reasons for Gambling Questionnaire (RGQ) consist of 15 items forming five factors: enhancement, social, money, recreation and coping. The RGQ was developed for use in the 2010 British Gambling Prevalence Survey (BGPS) and has now been employed in the second Social and Economic Impact Study (SEIS) of Gambling in Tasmania study conducted in 2011 in Australia. Given differences between Britain and Australia in terms of socio-demographic profiles, gambling cultures and attitudes, gambling access and availability, gambling regulation, and rates and patterns of gambling participation, the aims o

Relationships Between Emotion Regulation, Social Communication and Repetitive Behaviors in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The relationship between emotion regulation, social interaction and different types of restricted and repetitive behaviors is poorly understood. In the present study, structural equation modeling based on information about 239 individuals with autism was used to examine whether emotion regulation and social communication were associated with self-injury and stereotyped behaviors. Results showed that poor emotion regulation had a unique association with self-injury while difficulties with social communication was uniquely associated with stereotyped behaviors. Emotion regulation and social comm

Social Capital as a Behavioral Mechanism in Type 2 Diabetes Self-Management Among Black/African American Men.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) disproportionately affects Black/African American men, yet little research examines how social relationships support chronic illness management in this population. Drawing upon Social Capital Theory, this qualitative study analyzed in-depth interviews with a sample of 58 Black/African American men living with T2D to examine how resources embedded in social networks shape self-management practices. Findings show that social capital operates through bonding ties (family and faith communities), bridging ties (peer groups and healthcare professionals), network resources (inst

Developmental Scarcity Induces Sex Differences in Social Recognition and CA2 Perineuronal Nets.

Early-life adversity (ELA) has a lasting negative impact on social behavior in both humans and rodents. Sex differences exist in functional outcomes of postnatal stress, but underlying mechanisms remain incompletely explored. Using the limited bedding and nesting paradigm, a mouse model of developmental scarcity, we found sex differences in social behavior with adult males showing impaired social recognition and adult females showing intact social recognition with enhanced social novelty preference. Perineuronal nets (PNNs), specialized extracellular matrix structures, are known to inhibit dev

Gender, social engagement, and limitations in late life.

This study examines gender differences in the pathways among social engagement, physical limitations and cognitive limitations among U.S. older adults. It improves upon previous literature by longitudinally testing both social benefit and selection hypotheses, examining gender differences in these relationships, gaining modeling advantages through structural equation modeling, and by incorporating the frequency of participation in social activities as an important source of social integration that may influence health among older adults. This study uses U.S. panel data of adults aged 60 and ol

Generational differences in mental health and drivers of youth mental health decline in Australia and the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: The sharp decline in mental health among younger generations has become a key global health crisis of the twenty-first century. While often linked to short-term life-cycle stages or common period effects, emerging evidence indicates distinct "generational scarring" among Millennials and Gen Z (Generation Z). The causes of this decline in mental health are still debated, with theories ranging from economic insecurity to social fragmentation. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to disentangle Age, Period, and Cohort (APC) effects to determine whether the youth mental health crisis is

Social determinants of access to reproductive health services among Afghan migrant women in Iran: A qualitative study.

Migrant women, particularly those from low-resource settings, often face restricted access to reproductive health services in host countries due to intersecting social, economic, and structural barriers. This study explored these barriers among Afghan migrant women in Iran using the World Health Organization's Social Determinants of Health (SDH) model. This qualitative study employed semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 20 purposively sampled Afghan migrant women of reproductive age and 10 key informants from healthcare, midwifery, NGO, and policy backgrounds. Maximum variation sampling w

Harnessing Bourdieu's social theory to understand the deteriorating doctor-patient-nurse relationship in West Bengal government hospitals.

Communication patterns between doctors, nurses and patients determine both the efficiency of healthcare delivery, and the job satisfaction of healthcare workers. Job satisfaction is important to ensure retention of the doctor and nurse populations. Incidents of assault against physicians and nurses from relatives and family members of patients have become frequent both in the pre-pandemic and COVID-19 eras. Along with appreciation for frontline healthcare workers serving during the pandemic, there is physical violence directed at them for failing to salvage infected patients. Using Bourdieu's
