Electromagnetic navigation technology for more precise electrode placement in the foramen ovale: a technical report.

Introduction. Interventional pain management techniques require precise positioning of needles or electrodes, therefore fluoroscopic control is mandatory. This imaging technique does however not visualize soft tissues such as blood vessels. Moreover, patient and physician are exposed to a considerable dose of radiation. Computed tomography (CT)-scans give a better view of soft tissues, but there use requires presence of a radiologist and has proven to be laborious and time consuming. Objectives. This study is to develop a technique using electromagnetic (EM) navigation as a guidance technique

Application of imaging studies for orbital tumors: a practical review and representative cases.

Orbital imaging has undergone a significant transformation over the past few decades, evolving from basic radiographic techniques to sophisticated cross-sectional imaging modalities. Historically, conventional radiography was limited to visualizing only the bony structures of the orbit or radiodense foreign bodies, making it inadequate for detecting soft tissue pathology. Advances in imaging over the last several decades-first with computed tomography (CT) in the 1970s and later with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the 1980s-have revolutionized orbital diagnostics by enabling detailed visu

Ultradense sphere packings derived from disordered stealthy hyperuniform ground states.

Disordered stealthy hyperuniform (SHU) packings are an emerging class of exotic amorphous two-phase materials endowed with novel optical, transport, chemical, and mechanical properties. Such packings of identical spheres have been created from SHU ground-state point patterns via a modified collective-coordinate optimization scheme that includes a soft-core repulsion, in addition to the standard "stealthy" pair potential. To explore the maximal ranges of the packing fraction ϕ, we investigate the distributions of minimum pair distances as well as nearest-neighbor distances of ensembles of SHU p

Validation of two-stage pancreatojejunostomy after pancreatoduodenectomy for patients with a soft pancreatic texture and assessment of the remnant pancreas texture before second surgery.

BACKGROUND: Two-stage pancreatojejunostomy (PJ) after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) is one of the methods available for minimizing the possibility of grade C postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), especially in patients with a soft pancreatic consistency. METHODS: We studied 131 patients with a soft pancreatic texture who underwent initial PD without PJ. The pancreatic tube was exteriorized through the abdominal wall incision. Three months later, we performed PJ, except for four patients died of recurrence. The remaining 127 patients underwent two-stage PJ. To assess the changes in pancreatic

Evaluation of Temporomandibular Joint Structures and Conditions Using Dental-Dedicated MRI: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: MRI is the most viable alternative to depict the soft tissues of the TMJ, and a recently developed dental-dedicated MRI (ddMRI) brings new possibilities to count on this technology at point-of-care. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the feasibility of ddMRI for the assessment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) conditions and to compare the evaluation of bony components with that of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: CBCT and ddMRI images from 24 patients were independently assessed by three observers. Each TMJ side was evaluated for hard and soft tissue conditions (soft tissues a

Paget's disease with tumefactive soft tissue extension mimicking a chronic subdural hematoma.

Paget's disease, the leading cause of skull sclerosis, is often under-diagnosed on imaging with tumefactive soft issue extension being mistaken for other intracranial findings. A 71-year-old female with past medical history of hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, transient ischemic attack, 7 pack year smoke history, and alcohol abuse experienced an episode of bilateral upper extremity weakness, left arm numbness, left hand clumsiness, and word deficits that resolved within 20 minutes. Head computed tomography showed a right convexity mass measuring 6 mm with slight mass effect

Validation of a sub-epidermal moisture scanner for early detection of pressure ulcers in an ex vivo porcine model of localized oedema.

Pressure ulcers (PUs) remain a chronic health problem with severe impacts on healthcare systems. Early detection is crucial to providing effective interventions. However, detecting PUs currently relies on subjective tissue evaluations, such as visual skin assessment, precluding interventions prior to the development of visible tissue damage. There is an unmet need for solutions that can detect early tissue damage before visual and tactile signs occur. Assessments based on sub-epidermal moisture (SEM) measurements represent an opportunity for robust and objective early detection of PUs, prevent

Scapular Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma with EWSR1-CREB1 Fusion in an Adult Patient.

BACKGROUND: Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is a rare intermediate malignant tumor that arises mainly in soft tissues, especially in the superficial extremities of patients younger than 30 years. There have been a few reports of AFH arising from sites other than soft tissue, including bone, and unusual site and age make it difficult to diagnose this rare tumor. Case Presentation. Here, we present a case of a 54-year-old man who was examined for chest pain, and computed tomography (CT) incidentally detected a bone tumor at the scapula with destruction of cortical bone and invasion into s

Association between pre- and intraorbital soft tissue volumes and the risk of orbital blowout fractures using CT-based volumetric measurements.

Orbital blowout fractures result from trauma which breaks the bony orbital wall while sparing the rim. Previous research into fracture mechanism has focused on bony anatomy. This study evaluates the role of preorbital and intraorbital soft tissue volume in fracture risk. A retrospective case-control study was conducted on 51 cases of adults with unilateral orbital blowout fracture, matched to 51 controls who had experienced orbital trauma by comparable mechanisms without sustaining a fracture. Axial Computed Tomography (CT) images with orbital fine cuts were assessed on a 3D post-processing wo

Detection of subcutaneous and intramuscular air with sonography: a sensitive and specific modality.

OBJECTIVES: Soft tissue air may raise suspicion for several life-threatening illnesses. Physical examination has limited sensitivity in detecting air, and computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are time-consuming and expensive. Sonography can show soft tissue air, but the sensitivity and specificity in this setting are currently unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the performance characteristics of sonography in depicting the presence, amount, and affected tissue plane in a cadaver model of soft tissue air. METHODS: We conducted a single-blinded observation

A case report comparing various radiological tests in the diagnosis of calcific uremic arteriolopathy.

BACKGROUND: Calcific uremic arteriolopathy (CUA) is a rare necrotizing skin condition characterized by calcification in arterioles, leading to ischemia and skin ulcerations. This disease affects 1% to 4% of patients with chronic kidney disease and has a reported mortality rate up to 80%. The diagnosis of CUA is based on clinical judgment suggested by the characteristic skin lesions. Although skin biopsy is the gold standard for establishing the diagnosis, it is performed infrequently because of poor healing and risk for secondary infections. METHODS: In this case report, we compare the abilit

Preliminary study of the upper limb with the use of ultrasound transmission imaging.

A biologically safe, noninvasive method for visualizing bone and soft tissue relationships has been developed recently. Termed the ultrasonic transmission imaging system, its advantages include visualization of soft tissues in real time while motion is underway. The image can be correlated to standard x-ray films, but since no ionizing radiation is involved, repeated risk-free visualization of extremities for either diagnostic assessment or biomechanical studies is permitted. Resolution of 1 mm and a depth of field of 8 mm are adequate for visualization of neurovascular bundles, tendons, ligam

Acute Airway Compromise Due to Suspected Fishbone Ingestion.

A 68-year-old woman presented to the emergency department (ED) with acute respiratory distress following suspected fishbone ingestion. The patient exhibited significant respiratory distress, and a video laryngoscope evaluation revealed bleeding and edema around the vallecula and arytenoid soft tissues, raising concerns for impending airway compromise. The patient was intubated and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for further management. A soft tissue neck computed tomography scan revealed a fishbone lodged in the mid-esophagus, prompting a gastroenterology consultation for endoscopy.
