BACKGROUND: Brain fag syndrome since the 1960s was identified as a medical problem among Nigerian students and till date there are varying opinions on its aetiology and classification. Recently it was grouped among the culture bound syndromes in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Diseases (IV). This is a critical report on the clinical presentations of the brain fag syndrome in Nigerian undergraduate students.

BACKGROUND: If all authors agree on the presence of fundamental changes in mood, as the basis of the diagnosis of depression, little importance is accorded to other symptoms that can mislead the diagnosis: in particular, age and cultural influence on depressive symptoms.
AIM: Our work aims to describe and assess the frequency of somatic complaints and symptoms of conversion in Tunisian children and adolescents followed for depressive disorders, and to compare, through a study of literature to populations from different cultures.
METHODS: This work consisted in a retrospective review of child

Functional somatic syndromes (FSS) are characterized by patterns of persistent bodily complaints for which adequate examination does not reveal sufficiently explanatory structural or other specified pathology. Here we reviewed the following diseases or pathologies: nervous cough, vocal cord dysfunction, multiple chemical sensitivity and sick building syndrome. All of these often accompany co-morbid psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety disorder and depression. Therefore, bio-psycho-social understanding and approach are required for diagnosis and treatment of patients with these diseases. Spec

Up to 25% of patients seen in the doctor's office are suffering from some sort of anxiety disorder. In accordance with the ICD-10 classification, such disorders include panic disorders with or without agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorders, social phobia, specific phobia and mixed forms comprising anxiety and depression. Comorbidity with other anxiety disorders and depression is common. Symptoms reported by affected patients may suggest organic disease, which first must be excluded. All patients with severe persistent anxiety states require psychotherapeutic measures (cognitive behavioral

40 patients with panic attacks, chronic algesic syndromes (chronic headaches of tension, cardialgias) entered the study. They also had depression of mild or moderate degree. 65% of the patients denied actively disorders of the mood; 80% were sure that they had a severe disease that was difficult to diagnose; most of them doubted the efficiency of therapy with psychotropic preparations. An analysis of the polymorphism of clinical symptomatology of the masked depression revealed in more than half of the patients some combinations of clinical syndromes, such as autonomic dysfunction, algesic mani

Demographic characteristics of specific somatic complaints were studied systematically in 60 consecutive patients whose main complaints were bodily symptoms without organic pathology, to determine if the social and demographic factors in any way influenced the nature or localisation of specific common somatic complaints. The Scale for Assessment of Somatic Symptoms was used to systematically acquire details of individual complaints. The commonest somatic complaints identified were weakness of body or mind (72%), headache (67%), fatiguability (37%) and burning sensations (35%). Subjects with le

OBJECTIVE: Recent evidence suggests that a number of psychiatric and medical conditions may be members or candidate members of a larger family of conditions, which we have termed "affective spectrum disorder (ASD)." In order to facilitate further research into this concept, we drafted seven interview modules, using the format of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID), designed to diagnose the following psychiatric and medical disorders: irritable bowel syndrome, narcolepsy, Tourette's disorder, migraine, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and kleptomania.

Three definitions of somatization were operationalized: (a) high levels of functional somatic distress, measured by the Somatic Symptom Index (SSI) of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule; (b) hypochondriasis measured by high scores on a measure of illness worry in the absence of evidence for serious illness; and (c) exclusively somatic clinical presentations among patients with current major depression or anxiety. Of 685 patients attending two family medicine clinics, 26.3% met criteria for one or more forms of somatization. While DSM-III somatization disorder had a prevalence of only 1% in this

Women report more symptoms than men in mental health surveys. The evidence shows that psychometric biases cannot explain this significant difference. This study attempts to explore other factors that could bias the results--for example, that women are likely to report less serious symptoms than men or are less apprehensive in reporting symptoms because they have a higher tendency to report symptoms than men. A random sample of 213 women and 222 men, all married and between the age of 25 and 40, were interviewed at home in two districts of Montreal (Canada) and given the Health Opinion Survey (

OBJECTIVE: Although there is some evidence on heterogeneity of remissions in affective disorders (partial and full), many aspects of their comparative epidemiology, psychopathology, comorbidity and treatment are still unclear. According to our hypothesis, partial/symptomatic and full/syndromal remissions are not just consecutive stages of disease with spontaneous or treatment related interchange, but independent clinical entities with different essence. The distinction reflects a predominant pattern of disease development, based on interaction of two comorbid axes -- recurrent depression and p

The purpose of this study was to report the prevalence of vestibular impairment (VI) in children ( n = 2,528) referred for complete vestibular testing because of balance disorders (BD) or hearing loss (H). A VI was shown in 51.5% of the children tested (1,304/2,528). For BD (e.g., vertigo, dizziness, instability, delay in posturomotor development), VI was found in 36.5% ( n = 379/1,037). The most frequent causes of BD with VI included inner ear malformation (13.5%), delay in posturomotor development (13.4%), hearing loss revealed with vertigo (3.9%), trauma (3.9%), vestibular neuritis (3.3%)

This article revisits the links between psychopathology and functional gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), discusses the rational use of antidepressants as well as non-pharmacological approaches to the management of IBS, and suggests guidelines for the treatment of IBS based on an interdisciplinary perspective from the present state of knowledge. Relevant published literature on psychiatric disorders, especially somatization disorder, in the context of IBS, and literature providing direction for management is reviewed, and new directions are provided from finding

Psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety are commonly encountered in patients presenting to dental practitioners. The symptoms at presentation may not always be straightforward and, if not suspected and specifically explored, can often be missed. If unrecognized and hence subsequently untreated, this can have numerous adverse consequences to the patient and the health service. Hence, it is important that dental practitioners are more aware of the varying presentations, assessment and management of psychiatric disorders in their patients. In this paper, we focus on description of the c
