Extracts of Hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort) are used in the treatment of depression. They contain the plant pigment hypericin and hypericin derivates. These compounds have light-dependent activities. In order to estimate the potential risk of phototoxic skin damage during antidepressive therapy, we investigated the phototoxic activity of hypericin extract using cultures of human keratinocytes and compared it with the effect of the well-known phototoxic agent psoralen. The levels of lead and cadmium were determined in deciduous teeth (incisors only) of children living in Stolberg and some other cities located in North-Rhine-Westfalia, Germany. The Stolberg children were born in 1968-1973 (group 1; n = 103) and 1982/1983 (group 2; n = 103). The other children (n = 109) were born between 1979 and 1986. The dietary intake of arsenic and mercury by 47 children (aged 5-8 years) living in West-Germany (Duisburg) is reported. Duplicate portions of all food and beverages were obtained on 2 days. To clarify whether manganese nutritional status is better reflected by the manganese concentration in lymphocytes or in whole blood, we injected manganese solutions intravenously into manganese-deficient rats and determined manganese concentrations in lymphocytes, whole blood, and various tissues. The manganese concentrations in lymphocytes and tissues, but not in whole blood, were significantly less in manganese-deficient rats than in normal rats. Serum levels of copper and zinc were analysed in 50 patients with oral cancer, 50 patients with oral leucoplakia, and 50 patients with oral submucous fibrosis, and the values were compared with those of 50 normal healthy adult controls. There was a significant reduction in the serum copper and zinc levels in both oral submucous fibrosis and oral cancer. The copper/zinc ratio was found to be elevated in oral submucous fibrosis and depressed in oral cancer. The ratio may serve as a good indicator for the early detection of oral cancer.

Male Wistar rats were given either 100 mg SnCl2 X 2H2O per litre (0.44 mM), 250 mg/l (1.11 mM) or 500 mg/l (2.22 mM) in their drinking water for 1-18 weeks. Tin detected by a novel atomic absorption spectrophotometric method accumulated in the cerebrum at the highest dose level (2.22 mM) throughout the experiment. In brain, tin concentrations above the 1.11-mM dose were only found after 15 and 18 weeks. Tin did not increase in the brain at the 0.44-mM dose level. Graphite furnace atomic-absorption spectroscopy was used to measure aluminum concentrations in brain samples from 33 patients dying from a variety of neurologic diseases. A new method for extraction and determination of trace and ultratrace impurities from edible oils via an ultrasound-assisted extraction using tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) has been described.
