Implementing Trauma-Informed Partner Violence Assessment in Family Planning Clinics.

OBJECTIVE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) and reproductive coercion (RC) are associated with poor reproductive health. Little is known about how family planning clinics implement brief IPV/RC assessment interventions in practice. We describe the uptake and impact of a brief, trauma-informed, universal IPV/RC assessment and education intervention. METHODS: Intervention implementation was evaluated via a mixed methods study among women ages 18 and up receiving care at one of two family planning clinics in greater Baltimore, MD. This mixed methods study entailed a quasi-experimental, single gro

Intimate partner violence screening and counseling in the health care setting: Perception of provider-based discussions as a strategic response to IPV.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects women worldwide, and is addressable in the health care setting not only via screening, but also through provider-based counseling and referral to legal or social services, as appropriate. We conducted a study in Pennsylvania (USA) examining factors associated with receipt of IPV screening and women's perceptions of counseling discussions as a strategic response. We found that women with past-year IPV were more likely to receive screening (aOR: 2.0, 95%CI: 1.2,3.5) and to consider counseling discussions to be a strategic response to IPV exposure (aOR: 2.7

Partner violence, power, and gender differences in South African adolescents' HIV/sexually transmitted infections risk behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: Low relationship power and victimization by intimate partner violence (IPV) have been linked to HIV risks among adult and adolescent women. This article examines associations of IPV and relationship power with sexual-risk behaviors and whether the associations differ by gender among South African adolescents. METHOD: Sexual-risk behaviors (multiple partners in past 3 months; condom use at last sex), IPV, and relationship power were collected from 786 sexually experienced adolescents (mean age = 16.9) in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, during the 54-month follow-up of a HIV/se

Intimate partner violence victimization: identification and response in primary care.

In the United States more than 1 out of 3 women experiences lifetime intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization. Short screening instruments such as HITS or the AAS can identify IPV victimization. Nonjudgmental statements that validate an IPV victim's experience should be followed by safety assessment and planning. Intervention includes referral to services, treatment of associated health conditions, mandatory reporting if required, and documentation. Counseling has been shown to reduce IPV victimization. Clinical guidelines recommend IPV screening for all or most women, and providing or re

Perpetration of physical and sexual abuse and subsequent fathering of pregnancies among a cohort of young South African men: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Young men's involvement in fathering pregnancies has been substantially neglected in unintended pregnancy research. Gender norms give men substantial power and control over sexual encounters, suggesting that understanding men's role is imperative. We tested the hypothesis that young, unmarried South African men who had perpetrated intimate partner violence (IPV) have a greater incidence of fathering pregnancies. METHODS: The data for this study were collected from 983 men aged 15 to 26 who participated in a 2-year community randomized controlled HIV prevention trial in the rural E

Siblings exposed to intimate partner violence: linking sibling relationship quality & child adjustment problems.

Although the majority of families that experience intimate partner violence (IPV) have more than one child, most research to date has focused upon a single child within these families. A significant body of research has indicated siblings play an important role in children's adjustment and well-being. To address this gap, the three main goals of the present study were to compare the adjustment of older and younger siblings exposed to IPV, to describe and compare the quality of these sibling relationships from multiple perspectives, and to investigate how sibling adjustment and relationship qua

OBJECTIVE: To describe the methods of coping adopted by women who have been subject to physical domestic violence. METHODS: A cross-sectional study designed to investigate domestic violence was carried out on the baseline data of a cohort study of 1,120 pregnant women in Recife, Northeastern Brazil. The association of unwanted pregnancy and social support with depressive symptoms in pregnancy: evidence from rural Southwestern Ethiopia.

Intimate partner violence and mental health in Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: Latin America has among the highest rates of intimate partner violence. Are there differences in the impact of partner violence on reproductive health between postpartum women and women who had an elective abortion?

The aim of this study was to determine if the effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) in the previous 12 months (current IPV) on newborn's health, pregnancy outcomes and couple's reproductive behaviours were different for postpartum (PP) women as compared to women who had undergone an elective abortion (EA) in Trieste (Italy). This study is part of an unmatched case-control study. The major findings are that current IPV was positively associated with previous stillbirth among both groups of women, but the association was only marginally significant. Among EA women only, current IPV was sign

Gender-based violence, alcohol use, and sexual risk among female patrons of drinking venues in Cape Town, South Africa.

Gender-based violence is a well-recognized risk factor for HIV infection among women. Alcohol use is associated with both gender-based violence and sexual risk behavior, but has not been examined as a correlate of both in a context of both high HIV risk and hazardous drinking. The purpose of this paper is to examine the association between recent abuse by a sex partner with alcohol and sexual risk behavior among female patrons of alcohol serving venues in South Africa. Specifically, the aim of this study is to determine whether sexual risk behaviors are associated with gender-based violence af

Intimate partner violence and belief systems in Liberia.

Intimate partner violence is endemic in parts of the African continent. A small scale survey (n = 229) was conducted in 2009 in Northern Liberia, West Africa, to determine the prevalence and nature of intimate partner violence, and the cultural beliefs and gender norms that underpin respondent experiences and views towards intimate partner violence. Results show widespread experience of intimate partner violence among the respondent group, including physical abuse, sexual and verbal, and economic abuse. Acceptance of the situation was identified by most respondents as a way of responding to vi
