An introduction to antibacterial materials in composite restorations.

The longevity of direct esthetic restorations is severely compromised because of, among other things, a loss of function that comes from their susceptibility to biofilm-mediated secondary caries, with Streptococcus mutans being the most prevalent associated pathogen. Strategies to combat biofilms range from dental compounds that can disrupt multispecies biofilms in the oral cavity to approaches that specifically target caries-causing bacteria such as S mutans. One strategy is to include those antibacterial compounds directly in the material so they can be available long-term in the oral cavity…

Effect of Drinking Water Fluoride on Gingivitis and Caries: A Study in Peat and Non-Peat Land: A Comparative Cross-Sectional Study.

AIM: Humans get fluoride from food and water available in their environment. The source of clean water in peatlands comes from rainwater wit … at land (Yogyakarta). The data were pH and mineral content in drinking water, saliva, the number of Streptococcus mutans colonies, dental caries rates, and gingivitis. RESULTS: Drinking water fluoride is only significantly correlated with salivary fluoride on non-peat land. If these data are combined, it can be seen that drinking water fluoride is positively correlat …

Combination of 10% EDTA, Photosan, and a blue light hand-held photopolymerizer to inactivate leading oral bacteria in dentistry in vitro.

AIMS: The goal of this study was to investigate the phototoxicity of Photosan in combination with EDTA and a hand-held photopolymerizer used in dentistry for light-curing resins against leading key pathogens in caries, endodontic treatment failures, and periodontitis respectively. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cellular uptake of Photosan was detected by fluorescence spectroscopy for Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis but not for Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Addition of 10% EDTA enabled the uptake of Photosan by A. actinomycetemcomitans. Killing of S. mutans and E. faecalis mediat…

The effects of streptozotocin diabetes on salivary-mediated bacterial aggregation and adherence.

Diabetic rats are known to have an increased susceptibility to dental caries and major alterations in parotid salivary composition. Salivary … roline-rich proteins, were altered in the salivas of diabetic animals. After incubation with either Streptococcus mutans or hydroxyapatite several protein bands were depleted, and thus a variety of proteins and glycoproteins may be responsible for the adherence and aggregating activity of rat parotid saliva.

Altered cell-mediated immunity to group A haemolytic streptococcal antigens in chronic plaque psoriasis.

The proliferative lymphocyte response to sonicated group A, beta-haemolytic streptococci (Strep-A) was measured by thymidine incorporation in 78 patients with psoriasis (guttate, chronic plaque or both). Lymphocytes from 72 of these patients were also cultured with streptokinase/streptodornase (SK/SD), and 20 of the patients with chronic plaque psoriasis were further tested with PPD, Candida albicans and sonicated Streptococcus mutans, a bacterial type not associated clinically with psoriasis. The median stimulation index (SI) of the psoriasis group to the Strep-A preparation was significantly…

Antibacterial effects of silver and titanium dioxide nanoparticles-coated orthodontic arch wires: in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of silver and titanium dioxide nanoparticle coatings applied to stainless steel and nickel-titanium orthodontic arch wires against the Streptococcus mutans bacterium. METHODS: A total of 198 arch wires were divided into two groups based on the type of arch wire material: 99 stainless steel (SS) wires and 99 nickel titanium (NiTi) wires. Every group of these wire materials was evenly subdivided into three subgroups according to the nanocoating material: non-coated group (control), silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) and titanium dio…

Targeting glucosyltransferases to combat dental caries: Current perspectives and future prospects.

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance within bacterial communities poses formidable challenges to existing therapeutic strategies aimed at mitigating biofilm-mediated infections. Recent advancements in this domain have spurred the development of targeted antimicrobial agents, designed to selectively eradicate the primary etiological agents while preserving the beneficial microbial diversity of the oral cavity. Targeting glucosyltransferases (GTFs), which play crucial roles in dental biofilm formation, offers a precise strategy to inhibit extracellular polysaccharide synthesis without compr

Changes in Dental Biofilm Proteins' Secondary Structure in Groups of People with Different Cariogenic Situations in the Oral Cavity and Using Medications by Means of Synchrotron FTIR-Microspectroscopy.

This work unveils the idea that the cariogenic status of the oral cavity (the presence of active caries lesions) can be predicted via a lineshape analysis of the infrared spectral signatures of the secondary structure of proteins in dental biofilms. These spectral signatures that work as natural markers also show strong sensitivity to the application in patients of a so-called modulator-a medicinal agent (a pelleted mineral complex with calcium glycerophosphate). For the first time, according to our knowledge, in terms of deconvolution of the complete spectral profile of the amide I and amide

The biological aspects of oral pathogenicity.

The bacteria in the oral region tend to localize in the form of plaque deposits on tooth surfaces and in gingival crevices. The "metabolic nature" of this complex flora focuses on the reversible interactions between the plaque flora and their environmental modifications. The environmental circumstances will influence the range of expression in situ for the plaque (oral) organisms. Then, it is suggested that the potential for caries induction or periodontal disease may develop when conditions approaching extremes of environment result in altered metabolism and antigenicity of particular oral or

In vitro impact of Streptococcus mitis on the inhibition of oral cancer cell proliferation via mitotic modulation.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have elucidated a potential correlation between oral carcinogenesis and the oral microbiome. However, few reports exist on the interaction between Streptococcus spp., the most common oral microflora bacterium, and oral cancer. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the effects of Streptococcus spp. on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells in vitro. METHODS: HSC-3 (tongue carcinoma) and Ca9-22 (gingival carcinoma) cells were used as models of OSCC cells, and their responses were examined after adding major oral Streptococcus species-S. mitis, S. sanguinis, S. ang

Salivary proteins and microbiota as biomarkers for early childhood caries risk assessment.

Early childhood caries (ECC) is a term used to describe dental caries in children aged 6 years or younger. Oral streptococci, such as Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sorbrinus, are considered to be the main etiological agents of tooth decay in children. Other bacteria, such as Prevotella spp. and Lactobacillus spp., and fungus, that is, Candida albicans, are related to the development and progression of ECC. Biomolecules in saliva, mainly proteins, affect the survival of oral microorganisms by multiple innate defensive mechanisms, thus modulating the oral microflora. Therefore, the prot…
