Paediatric respirology presents distinctive challenges relative to adult care: patients have difficulties performing pulmonary function tests, more frequently have trouble complying, have distinct pathophysiology relative to adults and have diseases that occur alongside normal or abnormal lung development. Understanding and disentangling the effects of disease and growth are important to identifying the pathophysiology that drives paediatric disease and affects the quality of life of this vulnerable group. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide detailed images of lung structure and funct

Cancer cells evade conventional therapies by dynamically switching between glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). Simultaneous blockade of both pathways could overcome this plasticity but requires coordinated delivery of two inhibitors to the same cell. Here we design a glycyrrhizic acid (GA) nanogel that functions as both a structural carrier and a prodrug. GA itself serves as the structural carrier. It hydrolyzes in the acidic tumor microenvironment to become glycyrrhetinic acid (GRA), an OXPHOS inhibitor. The nanogel also encapsulates mannose, a glycolysis inhibitor. A crisis-in

Barth syndrome (BTHS) is a rare, X-linked genetic disorder caused by mutations in the enzyme TAFAZZIN (TAZ), resulting in insufficient cardiolipin (CL) remodeling and mitochondrial dysfunction. While BTHS respiratory distress and breathing difficulties are commonly reported, the precise role of intrinsic respiratory tissue vulnerabilities has only recently begun to be appreciated. Historically, BTHS respiratory distress is frequently attributed to secondary consequences like cardiomyopathy or generalized skeletal myopathy, leaving the intrinsic vulnerability of vital respiratory muscles poorly

Leukotrichia refers to whitening or depigmentation of hair resulting from reduced or absent melanin in the hair shaft. Although often considered a cosmetic finding, it may reflect underlying alterations in follicular melanocyte biology and therefore have diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic relevance. The clinical spectrum includes congenital and genetic disorders, including piebaldism, Waardenburg syndrome, tuberous sclerosis complex, and pigment dilution syndromes; autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, including vitiligo and follicular vitiligo, alopecia areata, and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada

Chronic infections such as those in cystic fibrosis (CF) are sustained by small, highly tolerant Pseudomonas aeruginosa aggregates that persist despite immune and therapeutic pressures. Unlike classical biofilms, these aggregates represent a distinct pathogenic unit - microscale, spatially organized communities that maintain structural integrity and physiological homeostasis under host-induced stress. However, the mechanisms that enable aggregates to remain intact under these conditions, and whether these homeostatic processes can be selectively disrupted, remain poorly defined. A key barrier

BACKGROUND /PURPOSE: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is a major cause of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea; however, up to 75 % of post-adenotonsillectomy patients still show polysomnographic alterations. We evaluated ultrasonographic changes in upper airway structures after adenotonsillectomy and their associations with sleep parameters.
METHOD: We assessed 55 children (<18 years) with sleep-disordered breathing (14: primary snoring, 41: obstructive sleep apnea) who underwent polysomnography and upper airway ultrasonography before and 3 months after adenotonsillectomy.
RESULT: Post-adenotonsille

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) exhibits bactericidal, fungicidal, and virucidal effects under ultraviolet light irradiation. However, there are few reports on the photocatalytic effect of TiO2 against parasitic eggs. This study aims to preliminarily investigate the effect of TiO2 photocatalysis on the inactivation of Hymenolepis nana (H. nana) eggs. We employed the trypan blue staining method to assess the survival rate of 100 insect eggs, investigating the roles of light, TiO2 concentration, solution pH and light intensity in the process of inactivating eggs with TiO2. Morphological and structural d

Upon vigorous extraction with ionic detergent under reducing conditions, the macroscopic structures of mammalian hair, bird feather and horny teeth of the hagfish become swollen and flexible but were substantially preserved. In each case, removal in this way of solubilizable constituents, such as disulfide-bonded keratins and associated matrix proteins, left a residue of epsilon-(gamma-glutamyl)lysine cross-linked protein. Residual features in hair included cell envelopes in the cortex, cell envelopes and intracellular deposits in the medulla, and nearly the entire cuticle cells. In feather, e

Mutations in coiled-coil-helix-coiled-coil-helix domain containing 2 (CHCHD2), including the Parkinson's disease (PD)-linked CHCHD2T61I mutation, are associated with Lewy body disorders (LBDs) by unknown mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate that CHCHD2T61I exacerbates age-related brain pathologies, including axonal degeneration and cognitive deficits, by disrupting the mitochondria-lysosome axis. Specifically, CHCHD2T61I binds and reduces cathepsin B (CTSB) and cathepsin L (CTSL) levels, inducing lysosomal membrane permeability and impairing α-synuclein fibril clearance. We also demonstrate that h

This report describes the case of a 67-year-old male with a history of treated prostate cancer who developed a left upper lobe (LUL) squamous cell carcinoma, which was treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). After SBRT, radiation pneumonitis together with tumor regression led to bronchial obstruction and post-obstructive volume loss that culminated in a rare complete left lung collapse, underscoring an uncommon but serious complication of SBRT. The patient presented with progressive shortness of breath; imaging demonstrated post-obstructive volume loss and heterogeneous FDG av

Millions of people worldwide live in areas prone to earthquakes and face devastating consequences and severe medical issues. Earthquakes not only cause massive destruction but also release hazardous mixtures of dust, fibres, microbes and toxic particles from collapsed structures, posing serious risks to the respiratory system and other organs. Survivors, search and rescue workers and volunteers can be heavily exposed to earthquake-related hazards. The respiratory health impacts of earthquake-related exposures include both acute and long-term effects, as well as exacerbation of chronic pulmonar

Oxidized/cross-linked dual-modified starch granules were developed as a pH-responsive delivery system for ellagic acid (EA). Starch was first oxidized via TEMPO-mediation, followed by STMP cross-linking. Single-oxidized (OS20, OS45) and dual-modified (OCS20, OCS45) starches were systematically compared to native starch. Results showed that oxidation enhanced swelling power (SP) and imparted pH-responsive behavior, while cross-linking stabilized the granules across different pH environments. In vitro digestion tests indicated that both modifications provided superior protection for EA in the ga

To investigate the failure behavior and cracking mechanisms in surrounding rock, a true triaxial experimental system and digital imaging were employed to perform compression tests on sandstone specimens containing preexisting flaws. Experimental results revealed the propagation characteristics of microfractures under stress concentration conditions and their correlation with failure patterns. Furthermore, a fracture propagation model was implemented to evaluate the susceptibility of surrounding rock to failure. Macroscopic analysis identified four distinct failure phases: quiescent, particle e

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a prevalent orthopedic disorder characterized primarily by compromised blood supply. This vascular deficit results in cell apoptosis, trabecular bone loss, and structural collapse of the femoral head at late stage, significantly impairing joint function. While MRI is a highly effective tool for diagnosing ONFH in its early stages, challenges remain due to the limited availability and high cost of MRI, as well as the absence of routine MRI screening in asymptomatic patients. . In addition, current therapeutic strategies predominantly only relieve symp

Heart, dentate nucleus, and dorsal root ganglia (DRG) are targets of tissue damage in Friedreich ataxia (FA). This report summarizes the histology and histopathology of iron in the main tissues affected by FA. None of the affected anatomical sites reveals an elevation of total iron levels. In the myocardium, a small percentage of fibers shows iron-reactive granular inclusions. The accumulation of larger iron aggregates and fiber invasion cause necrosis and damage to the contractile apparatus. In the dentate nucleus, the principal FA-caused tissue injury is neuronal atrophy and grumose reaction
