Synergistic bacteria-virus aggregation boosts electrochemical disinfection on LIG-based electroconductive surfaces.

Waterborne pathogens pose substantial public health risks, necessitating the development of effective disinfection strategies. Electrochemical disinfection is a widely used technique due to the in-situ generation of oxidants. Nanostructured electrode features can further enhance disinfection by producing extremely high, localised electric fields exceeding 106 Vm-1. While such surfaces have demonstrated efficacy against individual microbial species, their performance against mixed microbial populations remains underexplored. Here, we report, for the first time, the inactivation of mixed bacteri

Surface Characterization of DPPG Films Modified by Chitosan, Hyaluronic Acid and Titanium Dioxide.

This study focused on elucidating the effects of chitosan (Ch), hyaluronic acid (HA), and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO2) on the physicochemical characteristics of a model bacterial membrane (layer) composed of the phospholipid DPPG (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-rac-(1-glycerol) sodium salt). The membrane was prepared on mica using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique from an aqueous subphase containing Ch, HA and/or TiO2. Its surface properties were subsequently characterized by optical profilometry and surface free energy estimation. The nanoscale topography of the DPPG la…

Detecting and understanding the dynamics of blood coagulation on a material's surface: An optical reflectance approach.

Despite the technological advancement in blood-contacting biomedical devices, issues related to thrombosis remain a persistent challenge. These devices not only include implants such as artificial heart valves and stents but also surgical tools and instruments. This makes hemocompatibility an important parameter to be considered before developing any material for a blood-contacting device. The two oldest methods, including the mechanical tilting method and the free-hemoglobin method, lack temporal accuracy and quantitative analysis. Our work gives an accurate and quantitative analysis to measu

Plasmonic Nanocrevice-Gap Nanosnowman Particles Enabling Colocalization of Raman Reporters with Super-Localized Electric Fields for Highly Sensitive, Specific, and Quantitative Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Biosensing.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is based on a highly localized electric field (E-field), i.e., hotspot, on plasmonic nanostructures and enables a wide variety of ultrasensitive molecular-fingerprint sensing applications. However, reliably forming and controlling hotspots, and positioning molecules within them to reproducibly obtain maximal and quantitative Raman signals, remains challenging. Here, we designed and synthesized gold nanocrevice-gap nanosnowman particles (AuNCNSs) that feature a superlocalized E-field inside the nanocrevice gap via surface-modified DNA-directed nanostruct

Triphase Interfacial Nucleation Enables Microneedle-Templated Metal-Organic Framework Coating for In Situ DNA Capture and Release.

Organized immobilization of porous metal-organic framework (MOF) particles onto polymeric microneedle surfaces creates a thermodynamically favorable pathway for the efficient capture and enrichment of target molecules from biofluids during in situ sampling. Synthesis and surface deposition via homogeneous nucleation suffer from uncontrollable density, inferior adhesion, and substrate-damaging fabrication. To address these challenges, we propose in situ growth of MOFs on microneedles with water-based solvents under ambient conditions via a triphase interfacial heterogeneous nucleation strategy.

Surface-Attached Model Lipid Membranes Derived from Human Red Blood Cells.

Red blood cells (RBCs) are the most abundant human cell type, and interactions with the RBC membrane are at the heart of many processes relevant for human health, such as immune system modulation, as well as binding by foreign pathogens and pharmacological drugs. To better study such membrane interface interactions, it would be useful to employ surface-attached model lipid membranes derived from RBCs to enable surface-sensitive biophysical and biochemical measurements. Here, we present approaches to prepare two such types of RBC-derived model lipid membranes─tethered RBC liposomes and supporte

Methanol Clipping Modification on Liquid Metal Surface Enhances Photothermal Performance and Biocompatibility.

Photothermal conversion (PTC) enables materials to convert light energy, particularly in the near-infrared region, into heat. Photothermal materials have been widely applied in energy harvesting, sensing, and cancer therapy, while photothermal therapy (PTT) has emerged as a noninvasive tumor treatment with high targeting capability and low toxicity. Liquid metals (LMs) are promising photothermal agents due to their low toxicity, degradability, and tunable photothermal properties. However, their high reflectivity and poor stability significantly hinder practical applications. Herein, the three-

Effect of Amorphization on the Punch Sticking Propensity of Organic Powders.

Powder adhesion to tooling surfaces during pharmaceutical tablet manufacturing can compromise product quality and lead to significant production inefficiencies. Although prior studies have assessed adhesive tendencies in relation to mechanical, particulate, thermal, and surface-chemical properties, these investigations have focused almost exclusively on crystalline materials, leaving the role of amorphization largely unexplored. In this work, using eight chemically diverse model compounds, we systematically investigate how amorphization influences the adhesion of organic powders to steel tooli

Acoustically active poly(tBMA) floral nanocages for ultrasound-guided spatiotemporal cargo release.

Clinically approved ultrasound contrast agents, including microbubbles and nanobubbles, suffer from limited circulation stability, restricted extravasation, and dependence on exogenous gas cores, necessitating structurally inherent cavitation-active nanocarriers. Herein, we report acoustically active mesoporous polymeric nanoparticles (MNPs), also hereby referred to as 'Floral nanocages' synthesized via diffusion-guided seeded emulsion polymerization of tert-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) within polystyrene (PS) templates, where confined polymerization-induced phase separation generated floral-like

Cell micropatterning using an indium-tin-oxide patterned microarray chip.

Cell micropatterning is an essential technology for elucidating intercellular crosstalk and the behavior of single cells and cell populations. However, conventional micropatterning methods based on chemically modified cell-adhesive and nonadhesive surfaces face significant challenges. These methods involve challenges in optimizing substrate surfaces for culturing different cell types and exhibit variations in micropatterning precision. In this study, we propose a novel cell micropatterning method using an indium-tin-oxide (ITO) patterned microarray chip in combination with ultraviolet C (UVC,

Hydrothermal treatment and shear synergistically modulate the starch structural and pasting properties.

The change in particle surface properties can influence the hydrothermal effect of starch. To elucidate this, the synergistic effect of different hydrothermal temperatures (50 and 60 °C) and shear actions (150 and 300 rpm) on structures and pasting properties of waxy maize starch was investigated. Shear action during hydrothermal treatment significantly altered starch morphology, with cracks and erosion observed at 50 °C and more pronounced surface erosion at 60 °C. Hydrothermal treatment increased the thickness of long-range periodicity (dL) and crystalline lamellae (dc) in the semi-crystalli…

Structure and morphology of vesicular dispersions based on novel glycophospholipids with various monosaccharide head groups.

Glycophospholipids combine the structural versatility of phospholipids and carbohydrates, but their potential as excipients and performance in other related applications remains largely unexplored due to their low natural abundance. We have synthesized four novel phosphatidyl saccharide conjugates with different carbohydrate head groups; glucose, galactose, fructose and xylose by using a Phospholipase D catalysed transphosphatidylation reaction. The combination of Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Cryogenic Transmission Electron Microscopy (cryo-TEM) data allowed us to characterize the d

Biomolecular interactions of carbon nanotubes with amyloid-β proteins.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted considerable attention due to their prominent advantages of adsorption, tensile strength, electronic conductivity, and surface functionalization using proteins or functional groups. Recent studies suggested that carbon quantum dots, graphene, and hybrid materials doped with CNTs can effectively inhibit the fibrillization of amyloid-β proteins (Aβ), which represents a significant signal of early Alzheimer's disease (AD). The investigations on the CNT-Aβ interaction can elucidate the reaction mechanism and reveal the basic reaction phenomena of CNTs in AD p

Liquid crystal-aqueous interface renders selective detection of distinct mycobacterial cell envelope responses.

Antibiotic-resistant latent tuberculosis mandates sensitive, label-free screening platforms that permit the detection of changes in bacterial membranes as a potential therapeutic target. Growth stage-induced alterations in the mycobacterial lipidome, which underlie drug tolerance, further intensify this goal. In this work, liquid crystal (LC)-based detection captured the selective, spatiotemporal modulation of lipid membranes induced by bacterial dormancy. The LC-aqueous interface effectively differentiated responses across the bacterial cell envelope layers. Next, subtle changes in mycobacter

Waterproofing of cellulosic materials by hydrophobization with oleic acid: Thermochemical modification and structural insights.

Cellulosic paper is naturally porous and hydrophilic due to the presence of free hydroxyl groups, which limit its effectiveness in wet environments. Consequently, the industry faces ongoing challenges in developing environmentally friendly and sustainable methods to produce hydrophobic cellulosic paper. In this study, we produced a smooth hydrophobic paper by grafting long-chain oleic acid (OA) onto the cellulose surface through an esterification reaction via a thermochemical process. The chemical composition and surface morphology of the hydrophobic paper were extensively characterized using
