Quality of recovery and safety of deep intravenous sedation compared to general anesthesia in facial plastic surgery: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Facial plastic surgical procedures are performed under either general anesthesia (GA) or sedation. GA is often associated with post-operative nausea and longer recovery, while deep sedation is thought to greatly facilitate perioperative patient comfort and expedite recovery. The objective of this study was to compare these two anesthetic techniques in a relatively healthy patient population undergoing facial plastic surgery and to discuss optimizing patient safety with a deep sedation technique. METHODS: A non-randomized, prospective cohort study was conducted to evaluate patients

Cleft Lip/Nasal Deformities After Plastic Surgery for Unilateral Cleft Lip/Palate: A Prospective Study at a Large Hospital in Vietnam.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital cleft lip, with or without cleft palate, is the most common deformity of the face. Primary plastic surgery for rehabilitation and esthetics is important for patients and their parents; however, secondary deformities of the lip and nose can occur after the primary surgery. Therefore, we performed assessment of secondary cleft lip/nasal deformities to aid in planning of surgical repair of these deformities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six patients with unilateral cleft lip, with or without cleft palate, were operated with different techniques and examined post-surgery

Comparing plastic surgery and otolaryngology surgical outcomes and cartilage graft preferences in pediatric rhinoplasty: A retrospective cohort study analyzing 1839 patients.

Rhinoplasty in children has raised concerns about its safety in the pediatric population. There is scarcity of evidence describing outcomes and surgical techniques performed in pediatric rhinoplasty. We analyzed post-operative complications and cartilage preferences between plastic surgeons and otolaryngologists.Data was collected through the Pediatric National Surgical Improvement Program from 2012 to 2017. Current Procedure Terminology codes were used for data extraction. Patients were grouped according to type of rhinoplasty procedures (primary, secondary, and cleft rhinoplasty). A comparis

Periodontal plastic surgery for the management of an ankylosed permanent maxillary lateral incisor: A clinical report with 5-year follow-up.

Anterior maxillary tooth ankylosis disturbs the development of the alveolar bone process, leading to discrepancies between the cervical gingival margin and incisal edge position of the affected tooth, and therefore, the esthetics is compromised. Proposed treatments in adults and growing patients have been used successfully, but they have disadvantages and are contraindicated in some circumstances. This article proposes an alternative treatment for an ankylosed permanent maxillary anterior tooth with a slow replacement resorption rate in an adult patient, for whom a combination of a periodontal

[Sequential intervention with primary excision and Limberg plastic surgery procedure for treatment of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus : Results of a pilot study].

BACKGROUND: The current German S3 guidelines recommend radical excision for pilonidal sinus disease. Furthermore, the Karydakis operation and the plastic surgery procedure according to Limberg are also recommended. Contrary to the S2 guidelines of 2008, these two plastic surgery procedures for coverage are recommended for the treatment of the first-time manifestation of this disease. Most studies on the classical Limberg plastic surgical procedure are comparative in nature and describe a simultaneous intervention from which patients with an abscess are excluded. AIM: The aim of this present s

Plastic surgery and psychomorphology: a new tool for improving communication between physician and dysmorphopathic patient and for perfecting appropriate patient selection.

The relationship between physician and patient is becoming more and more delicate and requires an appropriate amount of attention and balance; this holds true in all medical disciplines, particularly in the field of plastic surgery. In this research project, the author proposes the use of a psychomorphology evaluation, as well as, a psychomorpholinguistic approach, in the global evaluation of plastic surgery candidates. The aim of this project was to present a pilot study that evaluated plastic surgery patient/physician relationship satisfaction outcome using psychomorphology and psychomorphol

High-frequency positive-pressure ventilation (HFPPV) in neonates and infants during neuroleptal analgesia and routine plastic surgery, and in postoperative management.

The low pulmonary compliance, the high airway resistance and the "rapid" breathing pattern of neonatal and paediatric patients make it necessary to design special ventilators to match the pulmonary physiology of infants. A ventilator system which also in small children has a negligible compression volume was evaluated in a lung model and during repair of cleft lip and palate in 16 patients under general anaesthesia and in two other infants during other operations. High-frequency positive-pressure ventilation (HFPPV) was given with an insufflation frequency (f) of 60 per min and a relative insu

Size Matters? The Relationship Between Residency Program Size and Operative Experience in Plastic Surgery-A 9-year Review of 1902 Graduates.

BACKGROUND: Residency program size, defined by the number of residents trained per graduating class, is regulated by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). In plastic surgery, operative case volume is a key training metric; however, the impact of program size on resident case volumes remains unclear. This study evaluates the relationship between program size and plastic surgery resident case volumes across a 9-year period. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used ACGME case logs from all graduating plastic surgery residents in ACGME-accredited plastic surgery r

Outbound cosmetic tourism from the United Kingdom: Patient experiences following a decade of complication management at a tertiary plastic surgery unit.

INTRODUCTION: Cosmetic tourism is a rising global phenomenon whereby patients seeking aesthetic surgical and non-surgical treatments choose to have these performed outside their country of residence. According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the number of people requiring hospital care in the United Kingdom (UK) after undergoing cosmetic surgery abroad has increased by 94% from 2020 to 2023. Whilst numerous publications have focused on potential safety and financial implications associated with managing the complications of cosmetic tourism, little is known of patient

Cutting Through the Clot: Rethinking Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis in Plastic Surgery with Aspirin, Direct Oral Anticoagulants, and Low Molecular Weight Heparin.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains a critical concern in plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) due to prolonged operative duration, perioperative immobility, and procedure-specific risks. While low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) has been the prophylactic standard, use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) and aspirin (ASA) has been gaining traction. This study summarizes prophylactic practices in PRS. METHODS: A systematic search of three databases was conducted. Studies evaluating ASA, DOACs, or LMWH prophylaxis in PRS with VTE, bleeding, or 30-day reoperation rates were in

History of surgical treatment of lymphatic drainage at the Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, St. Anne's University Hospital in Brno.

The Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, St. Anne's University Hospital in Brno, and Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University, Brno, has a long history of surgical treatment of lymphedema and elephantiasis, which started in 1970s. There were many types of surgeries described and performed at our department - starting with prof. Bařinka's radical operation of elephantiasis, then lower limb end-to-side lymphovenous anastomosis pulled through the wall to the great saphenous vein, and genital lymphedema reduction. We call this era "the first period" of surgical lymphedema treatment. "The
