[Experimental studies of the localization of neural centers in the ovaries and fallopian tubes in cows].

For the studies 4 sexually mature cows were used, in which ovaria and oviducts were cut out bilaterally or unilaterally. The fourth cow was the control of the experiment. The operated animals were kept alive for 21 days and then slaughtered. For studies were taken: the brain stem, spinal cord from the segments Th9 - Th13 and L1 - S4, bilateral spinal ganglions, bilaterally the sympathetic chain from the segment Th10 - S4, and also ganglions and visceral-plexi, anterior mesenteric, intermesenteric, posterior mesenteric, hypogastric and pelvic. The material was fixed in alcohol, embedded in para

Abnormal microvascular responses in a lateral epicondylitis.

The laser Doppler flowmeter, an instrument highly sensitive to changes in blood flow velocity in the dermal microvascular bed, was used to examine a sympathetic vasomotor response (SVR) in 40 patients with lateral epicondylitis. There was a significant association between the absence of a normal SVR in the skin overlying the affected enthesis compared with the unaffected contralateral epicondyle (P < 0.01). These results suggest that local dysfunction of the sympathetic nervous system may be associated with the pathogenesis of anatomically discrete pain in the enthesopathy of epicondylitis.

Where and how alpha-synuclein pathology spreads in Parkinson's disease.

In Parkinson's disease (PD), neuronal alpha-synuclein aggregates are distributed throughout the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, sympathetic ganglia, submandibular gland, enteric nervous system, cardiac and pelvic plexuses, adrenal medulla, and skin. Thus, PD is a progressive multiorgan disease clinically associated with various motor and nonmotor symptoms. The earliest PD-related lesions appear to develop in the olfactory bulb, dorsal vagal nucleus, and possibly also the peripheral autonomic nervous system. The brain is closely connected with the enteric nervous system via ax

Propranolol for Paroxysmal Sympathetic Hyperactivity with Lateralizing Hyperhidrosis after Stroke.

Brain injury can lead to impaired cortical inhibition of the hypothalamus, resulting in increased sympathetic nervous system activation. Symptoms of paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity may include hyperthermia, tachycardia, tachypnea, vasodilation, and hyperhidrosis. We report the case of a 41-year-old man who suffered from a left middle cerebral artery stroke and subsequently developed central fever, contralateral temperature change, and hyperhidrosis. His symptoms abated with low-dose propranolol and then returned upon discontinuation. Restarting propranolol again stopped his symptoms. This…

Renal denervation: a novel non-pharmacological approach in heart failure.

Heart failure is associated with activation of the sympathetic nervous system which presumably results in a progression of the syndrome and thereby in poor outcome. Renal denervation has shown to be effective in conditions with enhanced sympathetic activity like resistant hypertension and metabolic syndrome associated with sleep apnea. The first pilot trials assessing the effect of renal denervation on signs and symptoms of heart failure in patients with both preserved and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction are presently ongoing. The results of these studies will determine whether to p…

Effects of thiopental and propofol on heart rate variability during fentanyl-based induction of general anesthesia.

Anesthetics depress the autonomic nervous system. The effects of thiopental and propofol on heart rate variability (HRV) during fentanyl-based induction of general anesthesia were studied in one hundred patients. We observed different effects of fentanyl, thiopental and propofol on HRV. Fentanyl decreased total power of HRV and low frequency power (LF), but not high frequency power (HF), indicating a greater reduction of cardiac sympathetic activity. Thiopental and propofol caused the further reduction of HRV and decreased HF power. Thiopental increased LF power and LF/HF ratio, indicating tha

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy precipitated by brachial plexitis.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is believed to involve overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system and it is associated with a large number of causes, mainly with local trauma, nevertheless brachial plexitis (neuralgic amyotrophy) was reported in only four patients by previous authors. We describe a new case in this report. The reinnervation sprouting of somatic nerve fibres can have abnormal sodium channels which can acquire ectopic pacemaker activity which can be stimulated by sympathetic efferent impulses, in this way the reinnervation period after a severe plexitis can be associated with a…

The nasal cycle in patients with autonomic nervous disturbance.

The nasal cycle is thought to be controlled by the autonomic nervous system. In this study, we measured nasal airflow resistance in patients with lesions of the autonomic nerves that supply the nasal mucosa. We examined 20 patients with facial palsy as examples of parasympathetic disturbance, five with Horner's syndrome as examples of sympathetic disturbance, and one with acute pandysautonomia. The nasal cycle was observed in 13 patients with facial palsy and four patients with Horner's syndrome. The nasal cycle was also observed in one patient with acute pandysautonomia and disturbance of the

[A case in which tofisopam was effective for treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia].

Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) is a reentrant tachycardia, and the autonomic nervous system influences the paroxysms of PSVT. Tofisopam (Grandaxin) is a derivative of benzodiazepines. It is reported that heart rate variability (HRV) reveals the function of the autonomic nervous system and is used as an index of the effects of the autonomic nervous system on the heart rhythm. In previous studies, it was reported that tofisopam improved HRV. In this case report, the frequency of PSVT was significantly decreased and subjective symptoms of arrhythmia were eliminated after the admin

Innervation of the arterial wall and its modification in atherosclerosis.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays an essential role in the regulation of vascular tone. Sympathetic neurotransmitters epinephrine and norepinephrine are released from the terminals of perivascular nerves and suppress endothelial production of nitric oxide (NO), an important vasodilator. Sympathetic nerves also release neuropeptide Y, a co-transmitter that stimulates vasoconstriction and proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells. Parasympathetic nerves release acetylcholine, which leads to vascular contraction when NO production is inhibited. The ANS produces a variety of other vasoa

Sympathetic skin response in scleroderma, scleroderma overlap syndromes and inflammatory myopathies.

Sympathetic skin response (SSR), a non-invasive method for evaluation of the autonomic nervous system, was studied in 57 patients with various connective tissue disorders: scleroderma, dermatomyositis, polymyositis, scleromyositis and unclassified collagenoses. The patients were divided into three main groups: scleroderma (SSc), myositis or other inflammatory myopathy (M) and scleromyositis (ScM). The aim of the study was to detect abnormalities of the SSR in the connective tissue diseases, to define the pattern for each group and to evaluate the usefulness of SSR in detection of subclinical i

Emergent Role of Coronin-1a in Neuronal Signaling.

The Coronin family of proteins were first noted for their role in pathogen-host interactions and for modulating actin dynamics. Recently, however, Coronins have been found in a greater variety of cell types, and novel roles for the Coronins within the nervous system have been discovered. In the immune system, Coronin-1a enables Mycobacterium tuberculosis to evade lysosomal destruction. This activity appears to be analogous to protection of the NGF-TrkA signaling endosome during sympathetic nervous system development that is required for survival signaling. Similarly, others have implicated Cor…

Novel neural pathways for metabolic effects of thyroid hormone.

The relation between thyrotoxicosis, the clinical syndrome resulting from exposure to excessive thyroid hormone concentrations, and the sympathetic nervous system remains enigmatic. Nevertheless, beta-adrenergic blockers are widely used to manage severe thyrotoxicosis. Recent experiments show that the effects of thyrotoxicosis on hepatic glucose production and insulin sensitivity can be modulated by selective hepatic sympathetic and parasympathetic denervation. Indeed, thyroid hormone stimulates hepatic glucose production via a sympathetic pathway, a novel central pathway for thyroid hormone a…

Neural-immune interactions in health and disease.

Many lines of research have established the numerous routes by which the immune and central nervous systems (CNS) communicate. The CNS signals the immune system via hormonal and neuronal pathways and the immune system signals the CNS through similar routes via immune mediators and cytokines. The primary hormonal pathway by which the CNS regulates the immune system is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, through the hormones of the neuroendocrine stress response. The sympathetic nervous system regulates immune system function primarily via adrenergic neurotransmitters released through…

[The effect of multimodal pathogenetic therapy on microcirculatory function in combined craniocerebral trauma].

It is known that severe combined maxillocranial trauma causes impairment of microcirculatory vessels of bulbar conjunctiva as well as changes of local (cervical) and systemic blood flow, prevailing on the side of injury. New trigeminosympathetic regional block was used to produce chemical neurotomy of sympathetic and parasympathetic portions of autonomous nervous system in the neck. This blockade induced positive changes of minute CBF and microcirculation of CNS and facial area. Modified trigeminal sympathetic regional blockade along with intravenous infusion of dimephosphone improves both mic

Computational modeling for the quantitative assessment of cardiac autonomic response to orthostatic stress.

Objective. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a critical role in regulating not only cardiac functions but also various other physiological processes, such as respiratory rate, digestion, and metabolic activities. The ANS is divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, each of which has distinct but complementary roles in maintaining homeostasis across multiple organ systems in response to internal and external stimuli. Early detection of ANS dysfunctions, such as imbalances between the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches or impairments in the autonomic regulatio…

Variations in blood flow on mandibular glandular secretion to autonomic nervous stimulations in anaesthetized dogs.

1. Continuous stimulation of the preganglionic parasympathetic nerve (the ramus communicans of the mandibular ganglion) for 1-2 min at supramaximal voltage (5 V) and pulse duration (1 ms) increased salivary gland arterial inflow and this was accompanied by copious salivary secretion. The responses were recorded continuously during the period of stimulation. The frequency for initiating the responses was 0.5 Hz. Maximal responses occurred at 16 Hz. The response coefficient of arterial inflow to stimulus frequency was 0.17 ml min-1g-1 Hz-1 and that of secretion to stimulus frequency was 0.016 ml

Effect of autonomic nerve stimulation on bleb formation in striated duct cells of the rat submandibular gland.

Several previous investigations have shown that blebs form on the apical surface of the striated duct cells of the rat submandibular gland on feeding after starvation. In the present report the influence of autonomic nerve stimulation on bleb formation was studied by electron microscopy. Both parasympathetic and sympathetic stimulation were performed, using electric nerve stimulation. In addition, sympathetic nerve stimulation in combination with alpha- or beta-adrenergic blockers was used. Massive bleb formation took place in response to sympathetic nerve stimulation. This response was almost

Autonomic responses to repeated locomotor perturbations in older adults: dissociation between phasic habituation and sustained tonic arousal.

BACKGROUND: Balance loss during walking is an event that can activate the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Sympathetic responses to unexpected perturbations specifically during walking and habituation with repeated exposure remain underexplored in older adults. OBJECTIVE: To investigate SNS responses to repeated balance perturbations during walking and determine whether these responses habituate in older adults. METHODS: Eighteen right-leg dominant older adults completed six slip perturbations in the same direction (rightward) during the initial contact phase of gait while walking on a trea…
