Ten low-weight (mean, 87.8% of ideal), chronic bulimic patients, seven of whom were previously unsuccessfully treated with antidepressant drugs, received fluoxetine 80 mg/day for 3 months. Endpoint analysis showed a significant decrease in bulimic episodes (p = 0.01), vomiting frequency (p less than 0.05), and depression scores (Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, p less than 0.04; Beck Depression Inventory, p = 0.05; Hopkins Symptom Checklist-90 depression subscale, p less than 0.05). In addition, trait anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory trait: p less than 0.002), obsessive symptoms (Le

What good are positive emotions for treatment? A replication test of whether trait positive emotionality predicts response to exposure therapy for social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Positive valence emotions serve functions that may facilitate response to exposure therapy - they encourage approach behavior, diminish perceived threat reactivity, and enhance assimilation of new information in memory. Few studies have examined whether positive emotions predict exposure therapy success and extant findings are mixed. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of an exposure therapy trial for social anxiety disorder to test the hypothesis that patients endorsing higher trait positive emotions at baseline would display the greatest treatment response. Baseline liver fibrosis-4 score correlates to the progression of anxiety and cognitive impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or liver fibrosis may share similar pathophysiological features with Parkinson's disease (PD), yet their correlation was unclear. This study aimed to explore their correlation between PD and liver fibrosis using the fibrosis-4 score (FIB-4) as a surrogate marker. METHODS: We analyzed Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) data and enrolled PD patients with comprehensive baseline and 5-year follow-up time-point clinical data. Participants were categorized based on FIB-4 levels to assess the association between FIB-4 scores and va

[Research of TCM synthetic rehabilitation on the recovery of wrist joint after distal radius fractures].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate efficacy and advantages of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) synthetic rehabilitation therapy in the treatment of wrist dysfunction after distal radius fractures. METHODS: From May 2014 to October 2015, 72 patients with distal radius fracture meeting standards were treated using central randomization system for clinical research. All the patients were divided into two groups: 36 patients in test group and 36 in control group. Sixty-nine cases were finished treatment and followed up in the end. The test group fell off 1 case, and the control group fell off 2 cases.

Solution-focused brief therapy combined with mindfulness-based stress reduction to alleviate claustrophobia during MR imaging.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates the influence of solution-focused approaches combined with mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) on claustrophobia in a high-risk cohort undergoing magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. METHODS: In the prospective observational 2-group study, a total of 77 patients (55% male, mean age 50.1 ± 11.9) underwent solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) and MBSR before MR examination. The control group (146 patients, 48% male, mean age 48.7 ± 12.9) received the same MR examination condition and only received routine psychological intervention. Before the intervention, a

A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study of tropisetron in the treatment of outpatients with generalized anxiety disorder.

The selective 5HT3 antagonist tropisetron was studied in 91 outpatients meeting DSM-III criteria for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Following a placebo washout period of up to 1 week, one of three active treatments (tropisetron 0.5 mg, 5 mg, or 25 mg daily) or placebo was given for a further 3 weeks. After 7 days treatment termination rates due to inefficacy showed a statistically significant dose-related therapeutic effect of tropisetron. Similar effects were seen on the Hopkins Symptom Check List total score and the Global Impression Scale. The Hamilton Anxiety Scale showed a similar trend wh

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is one of the most common personality disorders among persons with substance use disorders (SUDs) and is characterized by severe clinical symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate if the effect of dialectical behavior therapy for substance use disorders (DBT-S) inpatient treatment on psychopathological symptom load in patients suffering from both BPD and SUD can be augmented by weekly 60-min "Trauma Informed Hatha Yoga" sessions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-nine patients suffering from comorbid BPD and SUD were consecutively in time

Depressive and anxiety symptoms in patients with COPD: A network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) often develop anxiety and depression, which worsen illness management and prognosis. Physical and psychological symptoms, contextual and illness-related factors display complex reciprocal interactions, which give rise to heterogeneous presentations. Examining the patterns of association between specific physical and psychological symptoms in patients with COPD may help to focus on the precision of the patient-centred care. RESEARCH QUESTION: We used network analyses to examine the links between symptoms of COPD, depress
