A web-based spot-the-difference paradigm for studying social information processing in naturalistic visual scenes.

This pilot study introduced and assessed a novel web-based spot-the-difference paradigm for investigating social information processing in naturalistic visual scenes. The task systematically manipulated both the presence versus absence of social elements (i.e., social figures) and the location of the target difference (social vs. nonsocial regions). Participants identified differences via mouse clicks while their eye movements and mouse trajectories were recorded simultaneously throughout the task. In Study 1, behavioral and eye-tracking data supported the task's sensitivity to social salience

The impact of mental images on reasoning: A study on aphantasia.

There is a long-standing debate about the role of visual mental images in reasoning. Knauff and Johnson-Laird's (2002) Visual Imagery Impedance Effect (VIIE) suggests visual imagery can hinder abstract reasoning, as evidenced by slower responses to visual compared to spatial and control problems. Aphantasia, reduced or absent visual imagery, offers a unique opportunity to test this hypothesis. In an online version of the reasoning paradigm used in VIIE studies, aphantasics and typical imagers completed three problem types (visual, spatial, control), while reaction times and accuracy scores wer

Evidence for a Causal Dissociation of the McGurk Effect and Congruent Audiovisual Speech Perception via TMS to the Left pSTS.

Congruent visual speech improves speech perception accuracy, particularly in noisy environments. Conversely, mismatched visual speech can alter what is heard, leading to an illusory percept that differs from the auditory and visual components, known as the McGurk effect. While prior transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and neuroimaging studies have identified the left posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) as a causal region involved in the generation of the McGurk effect, it remains unclear whether this region is critical only for this illusion or also for the more general benefits of c

Cathodal tDCS stimulation of left anterior temporal lobe eliminates cross-category color discrimination response time advantage.

The linguistic category-advantage in color perception refers to better discrimination performance for stimuli that belong to different categories (e.g., green vs. blue) than equidistant stimuli from the same category (e.g., blue). Despite the robust nature of category-advantage in color perception, the related cognitive and neural mechanisms are not fully understood. Some views attribute this effect to early alteration of visual processing of color while others attribute it to post-perceptual conceptual processing. The current study investigated the causal role of the left anterior temporal lo

Egocentric processing in the roll plane and dorsal parietal cortex: A TMS-ERP study of the subjective visual vertical.

The intraparietal sulcus within the dorsal right posterior parietal cortex is associated with spatial orientation and attention in relation to egocentric reference frames, such as left or right hemifield. It remains unclear whether it plays a causal role in the human in the roll plane (i.e. when visual stimuli are tilted clockwise or anticlockwise) which this is an important aspect of egocentric visual processing with clinical relevance in vestibular disorders. The subjective visual vertical (SVV) task measures the deviation between an individual's subjective vertical perception and the veridi

Electrophysiological correlates of visual binding errors after bilateral parietal damage.

Illusory conjunctions (e.g. the confusion between the shape of one stimulus with the color of another stimulus) are the most dramatic expression of binding failures in vision. Under brief exposure or when attention is diverted illusory conjunctions may be observed in healthy participants, but they only represent a real-life problem for patients with parietal damage. However, it is unclear whether such failures reflect the impairment of early or late stages of visual processing. Here, we examined the time-course of visual processing using evoked potential measures in a patient with bilateral da

Spatiotemporal memory is an intrinsic property of networks of dissociated cortical neurons.

The ability to process complex spatiotemporal information is a fundamental process underlying the behavior of all higher organisms. However, how the brain processes information in the temporal domain remains incompletely understood. We have explored the spatiotemporal information-processing capability of networks formed from dissociated rat E18 cortical neurons growing in culture. By combining optogenetics with microelectrode array recording, we show that these randomly organized cortical microcircuits are able to process complex spatiotemporal information, allowing the identification of a lar

Motorcycling experience and hazard perception.

Studies of hazard perception skills in car drivers suggest that the ability to spot hazards improves with driving experience. Is this the case with motorcyclists? Sixty-one motorcyclists, split across three groups (novice, experienced and advanced riders) were tested on a hazard perception test containing video clips filmed from the perspective of a motorcyclist. Response times to hazards revealed that the advanced riders (who had completed an advanced riding course) were the fastest, and the experienced riders were the slowest to respond to hazards, with novice riders falling in-between. Contribution of inferior temporal and posterior parietal activity to three-dimensional shape perception.

One of the fundamental goals of neuroscience is to understand how perception arises from the activity of neurons in the brain. Stereopsis is a type of three-dimensional (3D) perception that relies on two slightly different projections of the world onto the retinas of the two eyes, i.e., binocular disparity. Neurons selective for curved surfaces defined by binocular disparity may contribute to the perception of an object's 3D structure. Such neurons have been observed in both the anterior lower bank of the superior temporal sulcus (TEs, part of the inferior temporal cortex [IT]) and the anterio

Sensitivity to visual and auditory stimuli in children with developmental dyslexia.

This study considered the extent to which 23 children with dyslexia differed from 23 reading age (RA) and 23 chronological age (CA) matched controls in their ability to make temporal judgements about auditory and visual sequences of stimuli, and in the speed of their reactions to the onsets and offsets of visual and auditory stimuli. The children with dyslexia were slower (p = 0.039) than the CA controls in their reactions to non-verbal auditory onsets (tones), were less able to recognize the first stimulus of a sequence of tones (p = 0.022), and were less accurate in identifying the initial p

Effects of mora deletion, nonword repetition, rapid naming, and visual search performance on beginning reading in Japanese.

This study examined the extent to which mora deletion (phonological analysis), nonword repetition (phonological memory), rapid automatized naming (RAN), and visual search abilities predict reading in Japanese kindergartners and first graders. Analogous abilities have been identified as important predictors of reading skills in alphabetic languages like English. In contrast to English, which is based on grapheme-phoneme relationships, the primary components of Japanese orthography are two syllabaries-hiragana and katakana (collectively termed "kana")-and a system of morphosyllabic symbols (kanj

Parieto-occipital areas involved in efficient filtering in search: a time course analysis of visual marking using behavioural and functional imaging procedures.

Search for a colour-form conjunction target can be facilitated by presenting one set of distractors prior to the second set of distractors and the target: the preview benefit (Watson & Humphreys, 1997). The early presentation of one set of distractors enables them to be efficiently filtered from search. We report two studies investigating the time course of the preview benefit. In Experiment 1 we use a standard reaction time analysis to show that the benefit has a relatively slow time course; old items need to precede the new set by 600 ms or more in order to be fully filtered from search. Shorter latencies for motion trajectories than for flashes in population responses of cat primary visual cortex.

Psychophysical evidence in humans indicates that localization is different for stationary flashed and coherently moving objects. To address how the primary visual cortex represents object position we used a population approach that pools spiking activity of many neurones in cat area 17. In response to flashed stationary squares (0.4 deg) we obtained localized activity distributions in visual field coordinates, which we referred to as profiles across a 'population receptive field' (PRF). We here show how motion trajectories can be derived from activity across the PRF and how the representation

Auditory temporal order discrimination and backward recognition masking in adults with dyslexia.

The ability of 20 adult dyslexic readers to extract frequency information from successive tone pairs was compared with that of IQ-matched controls using temporal order discrimination and auditory backward recognition masking (ABRM) tasks. In both paradigms, the interstimulus interval (ISI) between tones in a pair was either short (20 ms) or long (200 ms). Temporal order discrimination was better for both groups of listeners at long than at short ISIs, but no group differences in performance were observed at either ISI. Performance on the ABRM task was also better at long than at short ISIs and

Temporal envelope perception in dyslexic children.

Speech intelligibility depends heavily on the accurate perception of auditory temporal envelope cues, that is the slower amplitude modulations present in the speech waveform. In a previous study, McAnally and Stein demonstrated that dyslexics may show impaired audibility (i.e. detectability) of these envelope cues. In the present psychophysical study, the ability to process temporal envelope cues was further investigated in dyslexic children by measuring detection thresholds of sinusoidal amplitude-modulation (SAM) and discrimination thresholds of SAM depth and SAM rate. Each threshold was mea

Binaural processing after corrected congenital unilateral conductive hearing loss.

Binaural processing was measured in a series of tests in patients before and after surgery to correct congenital unilateral conductive hearing losses. Data are presented from 19 patients between the ages of 6 and 33 years that had an abnormal external and/or middle ear on one side but normal hearing in the other ear. Surgery improved thresholds an average of 36 dB HL (from 56 to 20 dB HL). Patients were tested pre- and postoperatively for interaural temporal difference limens, alternate and simultaneous loudness balances, sound localization, binaural detection thresholds, and speech perception

Temporal analysis in normal and impaired hearing.

The ear contains an array of filters that separate the components of a complex signal into "channels" tuned to different center frequencies. Temporal analysis can be considered as two processes: analysis of the time pattern occurring within each channel, and comparison of the time patterns across channels. Within-channel acuity can be characterized by tasks such as gap detection, or by the ability to detect amplitude modulation as a function of modulation rate. The smallest detectable gap duration for a white noise stimulus is 2-3 ms. The results can be modeled by an array of filters, with eac

Visual and language processing deficits are concurrent in dyslexia.

Research has demonstrated that dyslexic subjects have language processing problems. More recent evidence indicates that dyslexic subjects also suffer a low-level visual information processing deficit. Little evidence is available to indicate the extent to which dyslexic subjects simultaneously show a visual and language processing dysfunction. In this study, 35 normal and 35 dyslexic subjects aged from 7.9 to 14 years of age were compared on three reading process variables, a visual processing score, a test of phonological coding and a test of language comprehension, each of which were shown t
