This study aims to evaluate the post-extraction alveolar bone reconstruction amongst 12 patients exhibiting loss of buccal bone plate in a tooth of the anterior region of the maxilla using the prosthetically-driven alveolar reconstruction technique (PDAR). In PDAR, a partial fixed provisional prosthesis (PFPP [conventional or adhesive]) with a specially designed pontic maintains the clot in a mechanically stable position during alveolar regeneration. Moreover, the pontic design, in hourglass shape and located in the subgingival area, also prevents gingival margins from collapsing. Gingival rec

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) techniques aim to reduce resorption after tooth extraction. The combination of a graft material covered with a resorbable membrane represents one of the most common strategies performed in the clinical practice. The aim of this systematic review is to analyze evidence regarding potential benefits of ARP procedures performed with allogenic/xenogenic grafts in combination with a resorbable membrane coverage in comparison with spontaneous healing.
METHODS: Electronic databases were screened independently to select studies suitable for inclusion in

OBJECTIVE: To assess the anatomical landmarks of the roots of bifurcated maxillary first premolars and study their effect on the diagnosis and management of periodontal disease.
METHODS: One hundred sixty-five maxillary first premolars were selected. The frequency of single-, two-rooted, and three-rooted premolars was assessed, but only the dual-rooted were used for the purpose of this study. For each tooth, the following measurements were obtained using a micrometer caliper: buccal and palatal root length, mesial and distal root trunk length, crown length, and width of the furcation entrance

UNLABELLED: Impacted premolars are a common occurrence. This report describes how an impacted UR5, which was easily palpable and predicted to erupt spontaneously, caused extensive root resorption in the adjacent UR6.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This case highlights the importance of a thorough assessment of the position of all impacted premolars, irrespective of whether they can be palpated or not. This is especially important when planning orthodontic extractions, where the use of up-to-date appropriate radiographs is essential.

Aim To determine the prevalence of restoration overhangs in a general dental practice and investigate if these are associated with an increase in the rate of alveolar bone loss locally. Methods Historical dental records were randomly and anonymously selected from the records of patients in a general dental practice. The most recent bitewing radiographs were examined and any overhangs were recorded along with location. Sequential bitewing radiographs were examined so that the restored tooth with an overhang could be compared over time with a similar but unrestored tooth which acted as a control.

BACKGROUND: Conventional caries indices, such as Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) and Decayed, Missing, and Filled Surfaces (DMFS), remain widely used. However, they do not adequately distinguish between lesion severity, restoration extent, and caries-related tooth loss, nor do they account for differences in the available tooth surfaces. This study aimed to develop a Severity-Adjusted Caries Index (SACI), an age-stratified and surface-normalized composite index designed as a structurally differentiated refinement of conventional cumulative caries-burden measures, and to evaluate its …

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss significantly affects health and quality of life of older adults. Removable dentures are the most common solution for restoring oral function and aesthetics. In Poland, a significant portion of elderly population suffers from edentulism or partial tooth loss. However, not all of these individuals receive the prosthetic treatment they need. The measurement of unmet denture needs, defined as the proportion of individuals with tooth loss who lack appropriate dentures, offers critical insight into disparities in the access to oral healthcare.

Inorganic materials are easily cracked due to their brittle nature, and the repair of these cracks, especially microsized cracks, by inherent inorganic components is a long-term challenge. In addition to dental caries and periodontal disease, tooth cracks and structural fractures are increasingly considered important factors leading to tooth loss in clinical practice. Herein, we propose a calcium phosphate oligomer (CPO) glue by systematically elucidating its mass transport behavior in microcracks, realizing the repair of tooth cracks with an improvement of mechanical properties. We discovered…

Oral jewelry is popular. One of the most widely spread types are so-called tooth diamonds made of composite materials which are applied to the teeth with an adhesive. Note that parents are required to sign a release form for under-aged patients in Switzerland. Tooth cap grills and gold teeth are considered status symbols within the Hip-Hop fashion scene. However, tooth ornaments favour the accumulation of plaque and can diminish the ability to articulate. With respect to jewelry in oral soft tissue especially tongue and lip piercings are of significance to dentists. Besides the systemic compli

BACKGROUND: Prematurity resulted from pathological migration of periodontally involved teeth with the loss of vertical stopping points between teeth, which can lead to teeth over eruption with dimensional changes favoring occlusal discrepancies. Therefore, evaluating and comparing the effect of guided tissue regeneration followed by orthodontic intrusion as opposed to orthodontic intrusion tracked by guided tissue regeneration in the treatment of an over-erupted tooth with angular bone loss.
METHODS: Twenty teeth in ten cases were selected with at least two teeth with vertical over-eruption a

In the early 1900s, various authors worked on "artificial roots" to replace missing teeth. E. J. Greenfield's pioneering works (1910-1913) are among the best-known today and are often cited in publications reviewing the history of oral implantology. Shortly after Greenfield's first communications in the scientific literature, a French dental surgeon, Henri Léger-Dorez, designed the first expanding dental implant, which he indicated was used successfully in cases of single tooth edentulism. Its aim was to obtain the best primary stability and thus avoid the use of dental splint during osseous h

BACKGROUND: Poor dental health is correlated with an increased risk of cancer. Using a nationwide population cohort database, we investigated which cancer is highly associated with poor dental health and which dental indicator mostly influences cancer risk.
METHODS: This study was conducted using the National Health Checkups (NHC) and National Health Insurance System (NHIS) database in Korea. NHC in Korea includes dental examinations. We retrieved subjects who underwent NHC between 2002 and 2003 and their medical information in NHIS database was followed until December 31,2015.
