Polioencephalomalacia was diagnosed in 2 animals from different farms. In apparently healthy animals from same farms, fecal thiaminase and a significant reduction in erythrocyte trans-ketolase activity was observed. A chemical study of a dichloromethane extract of Balantiopsis cancellata led to the isolation of four known 2-phenylethanol esters (1-4) and a phenylethanediol benzoate (5). Antifeedant activity toward Spodoptera littoralis (disk-choice bioassay) and growth inhibition of the phytopathogen Cladosporium herbarum in TLC-bioautography assays were determined. The results show that the antifeedant and antifungal activity of the extract is attributable mainly to the trans-beta-methylthioacrylate 4.

Spontaneous lavender growing in uncultivated fields in Portugal have been used in traditional medicine for internal and external uses. The essential oils (EOs) of Lavandula stoechas subsp. luisieri are characterized by the presence of trans-α-necrodyl acetate and trans-necrodol. These EOs are able to prevent the generation and deposition of neurotoxic β-amyloid peptide in Alzheimer's disease. Corneal endothelium plays a vital role in maintaining corneal transparency. We describe here a new in vitro technique for detecting acute effects of ocular drugs on corneal endothelium from animal species and post-mortem human tissue. The technique is based upon trans-endothelial electrical activity and leads as a consequence, to rapid, unambiguous, quantitative assessments of pharmacological effects upon endothelial barrier function and fluid pump activity.

This study investigated astaxanthin's cardioprotective effects in rat autologous orthotopic liver transplantation. Male Wistar rats received astaxanthin (500 mg/kg) for two weeks before transplantation, with controls including sham, transplant-only, and astaxanthin plus all-trans retinoic acid groups. We report a rare case of episiotomy site scar endometriosis manifested as painful perineal swelling near the anus for 2 years affecting daily routine activity, especially during menses. A 33-year-old female, para 2 with both vaginal deliveries with last child birth 8 years back. A 2.5 × 3 cm firm, tender nodule was present on the posterior vulva at the right mediolateral episiotomy site.
