Trans and gender non-conforming (TGNC) patients need better care; providers need TGNC focused medical trainings. TGNC health conferences can help, yet these events occur mostly in urban centers. Meanwhile, patients in non-metropolitan areas often face significant discrimination and notably poor access to TGNC care. This study explores the ongoing needs of TGNC patients and their providers following a one-day TGNC health conference in a small town in the American Midwest. Exploratory semi-structured interviews were used to gather in-depth information from TGNC conference attendees (N = 25). The

BACKGROUND: Long-term gender-affirming hormone therapy (GHT) in older transgender individuals could have beneficial effects on cognitive functioning. Cardiovascular risk factors and psychological factors are known determinants of cognition. Despite the rising number of older transgender individuals, only few studies have examined cognitive functioning in this population.
AIM: We aimed to assess differences in cognitive functioning between transgender women, and non-transgender (cisgender) women and men, and investigated the contribution of cardiovascular risk factors and psychological factors

Psychological and psychosocial functioning of binary transgender and nonbinary youth has been understudied in settings treating individuals at risk for psychiatric hospitalization. Further, little is currently known about potential differences in baseline levels of psychiatric distress and adaptive functioning across gender-diverse youth and their psychiatrically distressed cisgender counterparts. Key differences may elucidate avenues for adapted treatment and protocols among youth presenting for psychiatric care. Archival data of 426 youth (Mage = 14.94, SD = 1.5 years) referred to a psychiat

BACKGROUND: Constructing a sensitive phallus is a key objective in sex affirmation surgery, but still there is a major lack of evidence in outcome analysis of postoperative sensibility of the newly constructed body part.
AIM: To evaluate the innervation and sensibility of a forearm free-flap neophallus with nerve coaptation by a broad-spectrum follow-up.
METHODS: The phallic sensibility of 20 transgender individuals who underwent phalloplasty with a free radial forearm flap was evaluated by a standardized multimodal approach, examining 5 main sensory modalities. Measurements were performed i

BACKGROUND: Genital gender-affirming surgery (gGAS) with urethral lengthening (UL) in transgender men is associated with high urological complication and reoperation rates. Since 2009, we offer gGAS without UL to avoid these complications.
AIM: The aim of this study was to assess what portion of the transgender men opted for gGAS without UL and to assess functional, surgical outcomes, and patient satisfaction after gGAS without UL.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective data were collected from patients' charts. The International Prostate Symptom Score, uroflowmetry, and 24-hour frequency voidi

OBJECTIVE: This brief report examined the relationship of negative urgency (the tendency to act rashly in response to negative emotional states), (lack of) perseverance, (lack of) premeditation, and sensation seeking in association with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and symptoms of bulimia nervosa (BN) in a sample of treatment-seeking transgender (TG) youth.
METHOD: Eighty-six TG youth with a mean age of 17 (sd = 3.2) agreed to participate in the study. The majority of our sample identified as TG male (n = 60) with 20 participants identifying as TG female and 6 identifying as non-binary. Th

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Kidney transplantation and gender affirmation treatments are becoming increasingly more prevalent due to advances in technology. However, there is a paucity of data regarding kidney transplantation in transgender patients. Interesting considerations must be made in this patient population, since there are many hormonal interactions with kidney function and the transplantation process.
RECENT FINDINGS: The diagnosis of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), preoperative assessment/counseling, decreased testosterone levels in a transgender male to female patient, increa

Transgender people suffer from others' negative attitudes in many situations. The university context is one environment where further progress has to be made to ensure the inclusion of transgender people. In this study, a sample of 376 undergraduate students was collected and their attitudes towards transgender people were analyzed. A comparison was made between number of years in university, and a sample from the general public. In addition, comparisons were made by gender, since the literature shows more negative attitudes toward transgender people in men than in women. The results show rela

There is wide research investigating negative attitudes and behaviors toward gays and lesbians within Western societies. However, only a small amount of studies have addressed attitudes toward transgender individuals, particularly in non-Western societies with younger populations. This study, therefore, aimed to examine the predictors of transphobic attitudes in north Cyprus using young adults. Participants were 148 (96 women, 51 men) Turkish speaking young adults, aged between 18 and 25 years (M = 20.29, SD = 2.38). Participants completed a questionnaire package containing measures of inter

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, early adolescents who are transgender or gender diverse (TGD) are seeking gender-affirming healthcare services. Pediatric healthcare providers supported by professional guidelines are treating many of these children with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa), which reversibly block pubertal development, giving the child and their family more time in which to explore the possibility of medical transition.
METHODS: We conducted a critical review of the literature to answer a series of questions about criteria for using puberty-blocking medications, the specif

This article analyses two young adult (YA) novels about young men's experience of anorexia nervosa (AN), within the dual contexts of medical humanities research into literary depictions of illness, and the broader field of YA literature about AN. While emphasising the importance of diverse literary narratives in order to raise awareness of the prevalence of AN in men and boys, and to contribute to the reduction of stigma, it also considers current research into the potentially harmful triggering effects of AN literature on vulnerable readers. It identifies Anne Percin's Point de côté (Side Sti

BACKGROUND: Gender reassignment surgery is a procedure some transgender women (TW) undergo for gender-affirming purposes. This often includes the construction of a neovagina using existing penile and scrotal tissue and/or a sigmoid colon graft. There are limited data regarding the composition and function of the neovaginal microbiome representing a major gap in knowledge in neovaginal health.
RESULTS: Metaproteomics was performed on secretions collected from the neovaginas (n = 5) and rectums (n = 7) of TW surgically reassigned via penile inversion/scrotal graft with (n = 1) or without (n = 4

Transgender adults serve in the U.S. military at 2 to 3 times the rate of the general adult population. Unfortunately, transgender veterans die by suicide at twice the rate of their cisgender veteran peers and approximately 5.85 times the rate of the general population. This article reviews the literature regarding the prevalence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in transgender veterans. Suicide risk and resilience factors are reviewed, and future areas of study are detailed that incorporate findings from the broader suicide-prevention literature and research on transgender mental-health disp

There is significant evidence to suggest that intimate partner violence (IPV) is associated with mental health problems including anxiety and depression. However, this research has almost exclusively been conducted through heteronormative and cisgender lenses. The current study is an exploratory, quantitative analysis of the relationship between experiences of IPV and mental health among transgender/gender nonconforming (TGNC) adults. A national sample of 78 TGNC individuals completed a survey online measuring participants' experiences with IPV and depression, anxiety, and satisfaction with li
