INTRODUCTION: Copper (Cu) is an essential trace element for vertebrates, but excessive intake can induce intestinal toxicity. Whether nutritional intervention can alleviate Cu overload-induced intestinal damage and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we combined in vivo animal experiments with in vitro cell models to investigate the protective effect of histidine against Cu-induced intestinal inflammation and its molecular mechanisms.

Non-anadromous forms of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), those that are restricted to lakes and rivers, typically have higher mercury (Hg) concentrations than anadromous forms, which migrate to and from the sea. Using tissue burden data from the literature and our own analyses, we performed a screening-level risk assessment of methylmercury (MeHg) for non-anadromous Arctic char. BACKGROUND: Cobalt cyanide complexes often result when ore is treated with cyanide solutions to extract gold and other metals. These have recently been discovered in low but significant concentrations in effluents from gold leach operations. This study was conducted to determine the potential toxicity of cobalt-cyanide complexes to freshwater organisms and the extent to which ultraviolet radiation (UV) potentiates this toxicity.
