Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in Patients with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): A Narrative Review.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic condition related to severe stress and trauma. There is a mounting evidence about increased prevalence and mortality from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in patients with PTSD. This review summarizes the current data on possible relations between PTSD and increased risks of CVD, including biological, psychological and behavioral factors. Biological factors refer to increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS), hypertension, elevation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and homocysteine levels. Peripheral Brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF), se

Features and management of compulsive exercising in eating disorders.

Compulsive exercising is a common feature of patients with eating disorders. It is reported more frequently by patients with restricting-type anorexia nervosa than with other eating disorders. It is associated with higher eating disorder psychopathology, dietary restraint, general psychopathology, and specific personality features (ie, higher levels of perfectionism, persistence, and lower novelty seeking). It is a potent maintaining mechanism of eating disorder psychopathology, and it increases the risk of overuse injuries, bone fractures, and cardiac complications. It also appears to be a pr

[Co-morbidity: psychiatric disorder of opiate addicts at entry into heroin-assisted treatment].

OBJECTIVE: The present paper describes the type and prevalence of co-morbid psychiatric disorders in a group of opioid dependent addicts. METHODS: In 17 Swiss centres for heroin-assisted treatment 85 opiate addicts were assessed at entry using the SKID interview. RESULTS: Lifetime prevalence of co-morbid Axis I or Axis II disorders was 86 %. Most frequently patients were diagnosed with a personality disorder (58 %). Second frequently were mood disorders with a prevalence of 55 %, followed by anxiety disorders with a prevalence of 26 %. CONCLUSIONS: The high prevalence of co-morbid psychiatr

[Personality variables, psychopathological alterations and personality disorders in alcohol-dependent patients according to Cloninger's typology of alcohol abuse].

In this paper, an evaluation of Cloninger's typology of alcohol abuse in personality, psychopathology and personality disorders is carried out. The sample consisted of 158 alcoholics in treatment (56 Type I alcohol-dependent patients and 102 Type II alcohol-dependent patients). All subjects were assessed with diverse assessment tools related to personality (Impulsiveness Scale, Sensation Seeking Scale and STAI), psychopathology (SCL-90-R, BDI and Inadaptation Scale) and personality disorders (IPDE). The main findings were that Type II alcohol-dependent patients were more impulsive and sensatio

Patient Perspectives of Healthcare for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder in Australia: A Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is associated with higher suicidality and reduced functioning. Diagnosis and treatment can improve symptoms and quality of life. Poor quality healthcare experiences for people seeking help for PMDD have been documented in other countries, but not in Australia. OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively and qualitatively describe experiences of healthcare for PMDD in Australia, including variations in experience by healthcare provider (HCP) type. METHODS: We employed mixed methods including an online survey and semi-structured interviews in adults who had

Psychological factors, including alexithymia, in the prediction of cardiovascular risk in HIV infected patients: results of a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Psychological factors are known predictors of cardiovascular disease in many clinical settings, but data are lacking for HIV infection. We carried out a prospective cohort study to evaluate potential psychological predictors of preclinical and clinical vascular disease in HIV patients. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: HIV patients were consecutively enrolled. Demographics, viral and immune parameters and traditional cardiovascular predictors were considered; Intima-Media Thickness (c-IMT, continuous measure) and Carotid Plaques (CPs, focal thickening ≥1.5 mm) were investigated by B

Maladaptive Rumination Mediates the Relationship between Self-Esteem, Perfectionism, and Work Addiction: A Largescale Survey Study.

Background: Empirical evidence suggests that low self-esteem and high perfectionism are significant personality correlates of work addiction, but the mechanisms underlying these relationships are still unclear. Consequently, exploring cognitive mechanisms will help to better understand work addiction. For instance, rumination is one of the under-researched topics in work addiction, although it may explain specific thinking processes of work-addicted individuals. The purpose of the study was to test the mediating role of maladaptive rumination (i.e., brooding) in the relationship between person

Personality characteristics of condom users.

The California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and a survey of sexual behavior and condom use specifically developed for this descriptive study were administered to 132 sexually active, heterosexual male university students (mean age = 19.2 years; 75% Caucasian). Condom "users" (44% of this sample) were defined as those who reported using a condom in their last sexual encounter to ejaculation. "Sexually active" men were defined as those who reported some form of intercourse with a partner to ejaculation within the past 3 months. On the CPI, the condom users scored significantly higher than nonus

Psychosocial factors associated with engagement and efficacy of mindfulness intervention in the classroom.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness practice has been associated with a range of benefits in the literature. However, intervention effects show substantial person-to-person variability, and the individual differences underlying this variability remain underexamined. Identifying the psychosocial predictors of the practice can increase our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the benefits of mindfulness practice and inform strategies to increase both engagement and efficacy of it. METHODOLOGY: 66 university students in Singapore were recruited if they had completed a course where mindfulness practice

Post-traumatic stress in pregnant women with primary cytomegalovirus infection and risk of congenital infection in newborns.

BACKGROUND: Substantial evidence indicates that perinatal mental disturbances are associated with the risk for negative maternal-newborn outcomes. A neuroendocrine brain-placenta interaction has been described to explain the association between prenatal stress-related disorders and placental abnormalities. Whether these mechanisms may affect the likelihood of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of infections has never been investigated. AIMS: To evaluate the role of psychological factors in cytomegalovirus (CMV) MTCT in pregnant women with primary CMV infection. METHOD: A cohort of 276 pregn

Headache-a challenge across medical students' life: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Headache is a disabling disease that affects psychosocial factors. Medical students are recognized to be more susceptible to psychological stress than other. Quantitative summaries of prevalence studies on this subject are limited. The aim of this study was to quantify and comprehend the variance in prevalence at the global and regional levels. METHODS: We used a comprehensive search approach to find studies on headaches prevalence in the medical literature published between November 1990 and May 5, 2022. Database searched were PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Google Scholar. Studies t

[Type A behaviour and life events as risk factors for cerebral infarct].

INTRODUCTION: The role of psychosocial factors in cerebral infarct has been little studied and is therefore still undefined. OBJECTIVE and methods. To evaluate the effect of a pattern of behaviour which predisposes to stress, and of life events, on the occurrence of cerebral infarct, we studied a group and control involving 88 patients with cerebral infarcts diagnosed clinically and on imaging studies, and a control group of 99 persons paired for age and sex who lived in our health district. To evaluate the behaviour pattern we used Jenkins abbreviated questionnaire and for life events the Hol

Beyond Type A: hostility and coronary heart disease--implications for research and practice.

Research into the psychological and behavioral correlates of coronary heart disease (CHD) has gone beyond the traditional description of the Type A behavior pattern and is focusing instead on components that may be more sensitive predictors of CHD endpoints. One component being investigated frequently is hostility. Many questions related to hostility and CHD remain unanswered and warrant further research. Implications for practice include a need for reexamination of standard risk reduction programs in light of current knowledge.

Psychological factors in coronary artery disease: epidemiologic evidence.

This article reviews the epidemiologic evidence linking psychological factors and various indexes of coronary heart disease (CHD) that has been gathered since the Amelia Island Conference in 1978. In general, studies of populations not selected according to CHD risk support the conclusion that the global type A construct is predictive of increased risk of coronary events. In high-risk groups, including patients undergoing coronary angiography, the evidence with respect to global type A is much less clear. This stems from the fact that most of these studies, although generally failing to find s

Type A behavior: clinical significance, evaluation, and management.

Throughout recorded medical history a relationship has been postulated between the emotions and heart disease. Type A behavior is, in part, a contemporary restatement of this relationship. It is a clustering of behaviors characterized by a profound sense of time urgency, hostility, competitiveness, and a chronic struggle to obtain more and more poorly defined goals. Originally described in white urban men, it has now been shown to characterize many men and women in a variety of western industrialized societies. Type A behavior has been clearly established as a risk factor for coronary heart di

[Paranoid nosogenic reactions in patients with somatoform disorders].

The authors examined 16 patients with ischemic heart disease who had psychogenic disorders with ideas of rationalization of therapy. Paranoial personality disorders (paranoial psychopathy) was diagnosed in 11 patients, pseudopsychopathy in residual schizophrenia in 5 patients. The patients had either a fanatic idea of creating new methods of self-therapy and an autoaggressive behavior (performing some dangerous manipulations, usage of non-medicamentous substances, etc.). The premorbid state of such patients was characterized by inclination to paranoial reactions and a special predisposition to
