This study was designed to investigate the differences of histologic gastritis according to the endoscopic diagnosis, and between H. pylori positive and negative gastritis, using the Sydney system. A total of 122 patients (42 duodenal ulcer, 31 chronic gastritis, 35 gastric ulcer and 14 gastric cancer) underwent endoscopy with biopsies from the antrum and body. Among the 122 patients, 104 (85%) were H. pylori positive. H. pylori density of the antrum was significantly higher in duodenal ulcer than in chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer, and gastric cancer. The positivity of intestinal metaplasia …

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use and basal acid outputs determined by nasogastric suction were evaluated prospectively in 184 patients with endoscopically documented duodenal ulcer. The mean basal acid output and percentage of gastric acid hypersecretion for duodenal ulcer patients who used NSAID were compared with duodenal ulcer patients who did not use NSAID to determine whether patients using NSAID who develop duodenal ulcer have basal acid outputs in the normal range or in the duodenal ulcer range. Results were compared with 65 normal subjects and 105 patients with nonulcer…

We analyzed environmental factors, family history of peptic ulcer, gastric acid secretion, and serum levels of pepsinogen I (PG I) and gastrin in 56 juvenile patients with duodenal ulcer and 39 normal teenage subjects. Basal acid output and maximal acid output were significantly higher in our duodenal ulcer patients than in controls without ulcer (both, p < 0.01), and patients with duodenal ulcer showed significantly higher serum levels of PG I and gastrin than the controls (both, p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in any environmental factor between the patients and controls. F…

Do gastric ulcers in older patients bear the same characteristics as gastric ulcers in younger patients? To seek an answer, a multicenter study group in Italy compared gastric ulcers in a group of 124 patients older than 60 years with those in a group of 162 patients younger than 50 years. The only difference observed was that gastric ulcers in the older group tended to be larger. The rate of healing, in response to famotidine, was the same.
