The single needle method for urethrovesical anastomosis with strengthened posterior fixation during laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.

The single needle method for urethrovesical anastomosis with strengthened posterior fixation during laparoscopic radical prostatectomy was explored. The method was initiated by performing a fixing suture with a knot at 4 o'clock of the posterior lip of bladder neck, and another suture at nearby position was performed to leave the knot outside. From 5 o'clock to 8 o'clock, sutures were performed every one o'clock to secure posterior approximation, then every two o'clock a suture. To avoid a loose anastomosis, lock sutures were performed every 3 sutures. The needle was always driven full-thickne

[Investigation of the urinary tract in children in nuclear medicine].

The early detection of urologic abnormalities by antenatal sonography has resulted in the investigation of many infants and neonates for suspicion of either obstructive uropathy or reflux nephropathy. Nuclear medicine techniques allow to assess renal parenchyma integrity, to detect pyelonephritic scars and to measure absolute and relative renal function; these methods are easy to perform and reproducible, without any sedation, repeated venous punctures or bladder catheterization. Furthermore, the use of dynamic tubular tracers and frusemide test is a very usefull method which can differentiate

Renal clearance, urinary excretion of endogenous substances, and urinary diagnostic indices in healthy neonatal foals.

Urine (U) and serum (S) were obtained every 2 hours during a 12- or 24-hour period from eight healthy 96-hour-old pony or horse foals. Dams' milk samples were obtained concurrently. Urine volume was measured during this 12- or 24-hour period. The mean amount of urine produced was 148 +/- 20 ml/kg/day. Baseline urinalyses were evaluated on all foals at two days of age, before any manipulation. Urine generally was dilute (less than 1.008) but the specific gravity was as high as 1.027 in one normal foal. Continuous (12 or 24 hour) urinary catheterization resulted in bacteriuria but not white bloo…

Optimising outcomes in condom catheter use for male urinary incontinence.

Male urinary incontinence is a debilitating yet often overlooked condition. While medical treatments are available, some men may choose to manage the condition rather than opt for treatment. For these individuals, the choice of continence product is influenced by many factors including personal preference, comfort and discretion. The condom catheter, or external urinary catheter, is a non-invasive device designed to manage male urinary incontinence. It consists of a flexible sheath worn over the penis, that is connected to a drainage system. It is primarily indicated for patients with urinary

Purple urine bag syndrome in a hemodialysis patient.

Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) is an uncommon disorder, in which the plastic disposable urinary catheter bag turns purple or blue following hours or days of urinary catheterization. The purple discoloration results from indirubin dissolved in the plastic mixing with indigo in the urine. Bacteria possessing indoxyl sulfatase degrade indoxyl sulfate into indirubin and indigo. Indoxyl sulfate is derived from the metabolism of tryptophan. PUBS usually occurs in chronic catheterized elderly women who are constipated and poorly ambulant. The clinical course is benign and rarely causes sepsis. This…

[Prevalence of nosocomial infections in Catalonia. I. Infections and risk factors. EPINCAT study group].

Following an extensive protocol, an investigation on the prevalence of nosocomial infections was carried out in May 1988 in 33 hospitals fro … .6% and 8.9%. Logistic adjustment showed that notorious risk factors for nosocomial infections are: urinary catheterization, central vascular catheterization, mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy, and the duration of hospital stay. For some infections the age, sex, risk of the baseline illness, and intrinsic risk factors appear to be important determinants of the risk …

Postoperative bladder training in patients with mid-low rectal cancer facilitates early removal of the urinary catheter: a prospective, randomized, open-label, blinded-endpoint trial.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate whether intermittent catheterization for bladder training can reduce urinary catheterization duration in patients undergoing mid-low rectal cancer surgery. METHODS: Stratified by gender, 330 patients were divided into a 5-day catheterization control group, and experimental groups A (3-day bladder training) and B (5-day bladder training), with 110 patients each. RESULTS: Two-way ANOVA found that gender affected recatheterization, Pdet@Qmax, Qmax, BOOI and three-day total urine volume. No difference between groups A and B. Patients in experimental group A had a shorter …

Active sacral neuromodulator during pregnancy: a unique case report.

Sacral neuromodulation with an implanted device is used in patients who experience urinary retention and malfunctioning overactive bladder where conservative treatment is not sufficient. The knowledge of its effect on pregnancy is not known. This article presents the case of a 34-year-old pregnant woman with an implanted device, the use of which was not discontinued during her pregnancy. Full-term pregnancy was achieved, and a healthy child was delivered by cesarean section. Sacral neuromodulation during pregnancy appears to be safe and may be preferable to intermittent bladder catheterization

Improved emptying performance with a new micro-hole zone catheter in adult male intermittent catheter users: A comparative multi-center randomized controlled cross-over study.

AIMS: To confirm the improved performance of the micro-hole zone catheter (MHZC) compared to a conventional eyelet catheter (CEC) in male users of clean intermittent catheterizations (CICs). METHODS: Male self-catheterizing subjects, who used hydrophilic sleeved soft/flexible CIC as the only bladder emptying method, were enrolled into a multi-center, randomized, cross-over study performed across six European sites. Subjects tested the MHZC, featuring a drainage zone with 120 micro-holes and a CEC with two eyelets. The study consisted of four study visits (V0-V3), during which endpoints relate

Measurement of postvoid residual urine with portable transabdominal bladder ultrasound scanner and urethral catheterization.

The study was a clinical series of 95 ambulatory women with urinary incontinence. After voiding, each subject was scanned with a BladderScan BVI 2500, then catheterized for postvoid residual (PVR) and then scanned again. The mean PVR obtained by ultrasound was 49 ml, significantly larger than the mean PVR of 32 ml obtained by catheterization. Correlation analysis showed that the difference was not related to age, weight, body mass index, parity, pelvic prolapse or prior incontinence surgery, but was associated with prior hysterectomy and uterine prolapse. Regression analysis revealed that the

Transurethral Foley catheter misplacement into the upper urinary tract in a patient with a history of lung cancer and chemotherapy: a case report and considerations to keep in mind.

Indwelling urethral catheter placement is a common and comparatively safe procedure. Misplacement of a urethral catheter into the upper urinary tract is unusual, and only a few cases have been reported. We describe the case of a 43-year-old man who presented with oliguria and had a history of chemotherapy for known metastatic lung cancer. As he had no history of urological disease, urethral catheterization was expected to be uneventful. The catheter was unable to be pulled back to the bladder neck once the balloon was inflated, and the patient expressed discomfort. Subsequent computed tomograp

To clamp or not to clamp? Bladder management by suprapubic catheterization in patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction.

PURPOSE: In a small subset of patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction, insertion of suprapubic catheters (SPC) cannot be avoided. If SPC has to be utilized, catheter clamping and anticholinergic medication are often recommended, but evidence supporting this view is scarce. We determined the influence of anticholinergic medication and catheter clamping on urodynamic parameters and the status of the urinary tract in patients with chronic suprapubic catheterization. METHODS: In a retrospective study, the results of urodynamic testing, sonographic evaluations, and urinalyses of 8

Product evaluation of the Luja Micro-hole Zone Technology in clean intermittent self-catheterisation.

Clean intermittent self-catheterisation is a common procedure undertaken by people with bladder dysfunction. However, it is not without its complications, the main one being urinary tract infection. The most common causes of urinary tract infections are poor hygiene, technique and adherence, excessive post-void residual urine and bladder trauma. A catheter with new Micro-hole Zone Technology has been developed, which can potentially improve bladder emptying and minimise these complications. A case study is used to illustrate its effects in practice.
