Physiological monitoring as an objective tool in virtual reality therapy.

The goals of this study were twofold: (1) to investigate nonphobics' and phobics' physiological response in virtual environments, and (2) to analyze the trend of phobics' physiology during virtual reality (VR) treatment. As a measure of physiology, heart rate, skin resistance, and skin temperature were acquired. The data for two groups of participants were analyzed: 22 nonphobic participants (mean = 32 +/- 9.4 years) and 36 subjects with fear of flying (mean = 40 +/- 12.1 years) who met the DSM-IV criteria for fear of flying. As a result, skin resistance showed significant differences between

FPGA: Field programmable gate array-based four-channel embedded system for ultrasonic imaging of under-water concrete structures.

Non-destructive testing is needed for the evaluation of quality and safety of concrete structures in the field of civil engineering. The imaging of concrete/reinforced cement concrete structures (RCC) is a challenging task due to the non-homogeneous properties of the concrete material. To address this challenge, a novel real-time, re-configurable, four-channel embedded system has been designed and developed to image the internal details of the concrete samples using the water immersion pulse-echo (PE) mode under automation, which needs access from one side of the structure. The system performs

Parameter selection for and implementation of a web-based decision-support tool to predict extubation outcome in premature infants.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 30% of intubated preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) will fail attempted extubation, requiring reintubation and mechanical ventilation. Although ventilator technology and monitoring of premature infants have improved over time, optimal extubation remains challenging. Furthermore, extubation decisions for premature infants require complex informational processing, techniques implicitly learned through clinical practice. Computer-aided decision-support tools would benefit inexperienced clinicians, especially during peak neonatal intensive care unit

A 4-DOF Exosuit Using a Hybrid EEG-Based Control Approach for Upper-Limb Rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation devices, such as traditional rigid exoskeletons or exosuits, have been widely used to rehabilitate upper limb function post-stroke. In this paper, we have developed an exosuit with four degrees of freedom to enable users to involve more joints in the rehabilitation process. Additionally, a hybrid electroencephalogram-based (EEG-based) control approach has been developed to promote active user engagement and provide more control commands. The hybrid EEG-based control approach includes steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) paradigm and motor imagery (MI) paradigm. Firstly, t

Application of non-invasive electroencephalogram-based brain-computer interfaces in post-stroke hand function rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke hand dysfunction severely limits patients' independence, and conventional rehabilitation often fails those without active movement. Noninvasive EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI) technology addresses this by creating a closed-loop feedback system rooted in Hebbian learning principles. This system decodes rhythmic signals from the sensorimotor cortex during imagined hand movements in real-time. The decoded intention is then translated into commands to drive exoskeletons, functional electrical stimulation (FES), or virtual reality (VR) devices, thereby moving the af

Assistance Device Based on SSVEP-BCI Online to Control a 6-DOF Robotic Arm.

This paper explores the potential benefits of integrating a brain-computer interface (BCI) utilizing the visual-evoked potential paradigm (SSVEP) with a six-degrees-of-freedom (6-DOF) robotic arm to enhance rehabilitation tools. The SSVEP-BCI employs electroencephalography (EEG) as a method of measuring neural responses inside the occipital lobe in reaction to pre-established visual stimulus frequencies. The BCI offline and online studies yielded accuracy rates of 75% and 83%, respectively, indicating the efficacy of the system in accurately detecting and capturing user intent. The robotic arm

P300-Based Brain-Computer Interface Speller: Usability Evaluation of Three Speller Sizes by Severely Motor-Disabled Patients.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) spellers allow severe motor-disabled patients to communicate using their brain activity without muscular mobility. Different visual configurations of the widely studied P300-based BCI speller had been assessed with healthy and motor-disabled users. However, the speller size (in terms of cm) had only been assessed for healthy subjects. We think that the speller size might be limiting for some severely motor-disabled patients with restricted head and eye movements. The usability of three speller sizes was assessed for seven patients diagnosed with amyotrophic later

Touchscreen-based assessment of upper limb kinematics after stroke: Reliability, validity and sensitivity to motor impairment.

BACKGROUND: Conventional clinical tools for assessing upper limb motor function often lack the sensitivity and specificity needed to detect subtle changes in motor performance and may be subject to bias. Kinematic assessment offers a potential solution by providing objective, precise, and detailed data on movement quality. However, it is typically associated with high costs, complex equipment, time-consuming procedures, and the need for controlled environments, all of which limit its accessibility and practicality in clinical settings. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability, validity, an

Gait stability in virtual reality: effects of VR display modality in the presence of visual perturbations.

PURPOSE: Virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a pivotal tool for studying balance and postural control mechanisms, leveraging unpredictable visual disturbances that dynamically challenge visuomotor processing. However, the quantity and quality of information available in the visual field may differ between VR systems, potentially introducing conflict with the intended perturbation inputs. Consequently, the extent to which a VR system used in a visual perturbation paradigm influences its ability to elicit compensatory gait behaviors remains unclear. Here we investigate the impact of (1) VR displ
