Thirty-one patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome underwent uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). After three months, the average apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) decreased from 352.2 +/- 138.2 (mean +/- SD) to 182.2 +/- 140.4 episodes/hr and the duration of oxygen desaturation (less than 85%) decreased from 38.4 +/- 48.6 to 13.2 +/- 25.8 minutes. Although only 51.6% patients had a reduction of AHI greater than 50%, a questionnaire study revealed that most patients had subjective improvement of clinical symptoms and only mild complications were noted. The experience of the uvulopalatopharyngoplasty operation, performed on 24 patients for the relief of loud or heroic snoring, is presented. The operation successfully reduced the severity of snoring in 96% of patients. Postoperative complications were uncommon but included nasal regurgitation and intrapharyngeal adhesions in one patient. The role of the uvulopalatopharyngoplasty operation in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea is undecided but the authors do not perform this operation on such patients.

Although ingestion of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) is rare, it carries a high risk of morbidity and mortality. This paper reports the first such case from Turkey in which a 70-year-old man unintentionally ingested MEKP in his kitchen.
